She looks like she's moving way better than Wimbledon and in better shape, though obviously far from prime Serena. And, she kind of look like she's enjoying it and not being tortured.

Besides serve, and some net approaches, which were great, Martic did pretty the same that all of Serena's opponents did so far – played right in Serena's striking zone. But probably it's also not possible to do anything else, because Serena hit the ball hard and not many players can handle that.

I adore Ash but she really did get lucky with her French Open draw.. Anisimova in the semis and Vondrousova in the final...

Now lost in the 4R at Wimbledon and USO to Riske and Wang.
Not to mention Anisimova really should've won that SF so Barty did get pretty lucky there. Imo that was the real final

Well, those opponents may be playing to her strengths, but she is striking the ball much better than earlier this year and looks a little fitter. I'm hopeful that the "real" Serena is going to show up and win this US Open. I didn't watch the match, but her swing on both sides just looks so clean on the highlights and her footwork was solid.

Serena return game today is just too good.

Keys once again showing her mindless ball bashing making UEs left and right. She doesn’t know how to control her aggresion and keep the ball on the court.

She has improved since 2017, but enough.

The last game was an embarrassment. I wanted Keys to win this title, but she’s frustrating to watch when things are not going her way.

Does anyone think Taylor will get past Bianca? I think she’s had great run, but the Canadian might be just too strong.

I really hope so. But she's underdog and Bibi know how to play lob that Simona could never.

Tay has great overhead tho so let's see. Sadly I'm on a flight so hopefully Nadal - Cilic get extra long so I can watch.

Svitolina and Konta have now made the QF's of every slam.

Something that slam champs like Wozniacki, Muguruza, Stosur, Osaka and Barty haven't done.

Pretty amazing since she'd never made a SF til Wimbledon this year.

She's definitely a dark horse, she's so happy with Monfils by her side, has the slam SF hex gone, isn't the favourite for the title. Has come through a tough draw all in straight set wins. Huge.

Wow,what a clinical performance from Svitolina! Hope she can keep it up and make the final against (probably) Andreescu or Osaka
Elina v. Naomi would be a dream final for me! After I get over the pain of this Svitolina/Konta conundrum, that is

Real tight between #8 and #13 in the rankings, with Keys and Sloane losing early they'll drop from the top 10 so a number of players are looking to crack into the top 10. Only 252 points between them (crazy when the points between #7 and #8 are over 1100 points).

Currently it's
#8 Bencic
#9 Konta
#10 Andreescu
#11 Serena
#12 Wang

Bianca and Wang looking for their top 10 debut. Bencic looking for her top 10 return for the first time since June 2016 and Konta looking for her return since January 2018.

Not a big fan of Svitolina, but Konta has no business being in SF of a slam.
Svitolina even less so. Konta has actually made the semis of each of the other 3 slams.

One thing Svitolina seems ot have going for her lately is a bigger first serve, although I actually don't know if she was capable of 105+ mph before. Her 2nd serve is still absolute garbage though.

After week one, the summary of key players and events is as follows:

Sharapova: She came to play. No matter what some believe about her match-up vs. Serena, she still comes to play, thinking she can win.
Halep: some were all on Halep bandwagon for most of the year; she still managed to do her job at Wimbledon, but she's not going to be this sweeping force some fantasize her to be. She's part of a strong tour, and that is also proven by the ability of others to defeat her at any time. Frankly, she was dismantled at this USO.
Townsend: Good that she's back in some sort of form; typical of the USTA and specifically Patrick McEnroe, she was never treated with the kind of aggressive training/foundation that their "County Club" favorites" (e.g. Riske) were/are. She's better off finding and keeping a solid team having nothing to do with the Country Club wing of the USTA.
Kerber: Still a mystery about her recent majors performances; she's a more than solid, clearly talented player who can defeat anyone on the biggest stages. She's a focused player, yet something of late is not clicking, and I'm not sure what that it. I can only hope she returns to form, as she's a great competitor and a joy to watch.
Kvitová: No shock here; she's been a consistently weak performer at the USO for a very long time, and this TTW member-named "bug eyed princess" was never one to be considered a contender.
Venus: From her behavior after losing in Round 2, it appears she has no honest intention of retiring, no matter how much the competition has become a mountain she cannot climb anymore.
Wozniacki: By no means was she soundly defeated--it was more about her physical issues than anything else. The game she put together to win her lone major still rests in her mind, but the physical side seems to be deflating the chances of said game to return. One can tel she still enjoys playing, but at the same time, I would not raise an eyebrow if she announced her retirement sometime soon.

No clear read on who will end up winning the title. That's how hyper-competitive the WTA is.

I don’t rate either.

My post was about Konta. She is not that good.
