Sharapova at home, watching this match: "In retrospect, my 1st round match wasn't that bad, huh?".

Serena looking very focused. Everything is flowing. Even her movement, her recent downfall, is looking alright.
 
I agree with Billie Jean King about Serena being match tough. This is the first time in a while that she's gone into a major having put in good work in the lead-up tournaments. Someone on here asked about what they wanted to see Serena do (when she lost Wimbledon), and I said I just wanted her to play more matches. She came into this tournament in-form (back spasms notwithstanding) and she looks marvelous.
 
I have decided that Svitolina doesnt' deserve to win a Major. She was one of those players that is just on the edge and good enough to win YEF and all. But after this lack of tactical awareness against power player, she doesn't deserve to win

These girls are making it too easy for Williams. How are you supposed to put any pressure on her playing way behind the baseline?

I think the favorite is whoever comes from the other half. I have not been able to watch much from this match, but I think Serena's movement will be exposed.
 
Only 4 games in a semifinal again. Yikes. :(

Wish she did more once she got over the quarterfinal hurdles. Oh well. Three deep runs at the Majors, she lost to the eventual champion the previous two times.

Hopefully that's the case now again. Go on and win that number 24, Serena. :)
 
You can't play that far behind the baseline the entire match. After just 4 games, it was clear that strategy wasn't working. you have to step in just behind the baseline and take the ball on the rise even at the risk of making more UE's. I guess Svitolina didn't have plan B. Who's fault is that ?
 
Serena really showed great movement and hustle to those drop shots, adjusted for those slices, and really hit her forehand well. I was shocked she made a few volleys that were good.
 
I see some are pinning their hopes on Bianca, even though she not out of the semis yet. While I think Bianca has a very nice game, she need three set to get through a qualifier who pretty thick and serve and volleys.

Bianca would need a total collapse from Serena. Bianca is not the only one peaking.

Oh well....I guess an @$$ whooping is an @$$ whooping any which way you look at it. Another miserable semi final performance from Svitolina...

She did step on her foot badly, which may have affected her. Though later she denied there being an issue and didn’t take medical so who knows.

But yeah I don’t see that happening again.

No strategy. No Plan B. Gives up at 1-3 in second set instead of fighting like Diego did.
Svitolina cannot be taken seriously. Just like her bf Monfils.

I mean...she never should have been in that semi to begin with. She just isn’t a grass player at all.

This otoh did surprise me. Svitolina is elite on HC but just didn’t look like it at all.

I agree with Nostradamus, it was a bad idea to stand so far behind the baseline. And then she just kept at it even though it wasn’t working at all.

Disappointing.

That qualifier beat Wimbledon champ Halep and if you watched that game, Bianca only lost the second set because of a brief dip. She dominated Townsend in the first and third.

Well, she’s young and has time. She’ll play a slam final eventually.

Bianca dominated a qualifier who folks here mocked for being heavy. Townsend made any adjustment in the second set, it was not a dip by Bianca. If someone like Taylor, who had a lot of miles on those legs made the match competitive; what can a fresh, motivated, less heavy Serena do?

Right. No initiative and no attempt to change it up and at least try another way.

I guess she was overwhelmed, and probably nothing she did was going to change the outcome but I can't accept that an HC player as good as her can't manage a better scoreline.

Monfils tried his best even though he was dead tired. All those double faults were due to him being tired in the legs, and it wasn't his fault

Townsend's movement was just fine in that match. She covered more ground than Andreescu did. And Bianca's game did dip. She committed 14 unforced errors in the second set compared to 8 in the first and 4 in the third.

Almost 38 yrs old, playing like she's 30 yrs. Two convincing wins. Like someone here said, Svitolina had no plan. SW was too focused & dominant.
 
Bianca hits that shot where she's nearly on her knees a lot. It doesn't seem like that's a necessary position to voluntarily go into because it looks so precarious, and yet, most of the time she gets that shot in.
