Osaka retiring, what was wrong?

She went back for a overhead and something popped in her knee. After that
she was trying to stretch our her leg and finally during her service game 40 all worked
off the court till they brought in the trainers.

They looked her over and decided they couldnt find anything mechanical wrong with her knee
Taped her up. She finished the service game and retired,

Hope she is ok !!!!

It's crazy that Keys has never won a Premier+ title. Sure she's had some stiff competition but then you remember that players like Vesnina, Suarez Navarro and Konta have won Premier+ titles... Keys made the Premier 5 Rome final losing to Serena and the Premier 5 Rogers Cup final losing to Halep, both in 2016. Since that Rogers Cup final over 3 years ago, she hasn't made a single SF of a Premier+ tournament!

Yet in that same time frame she's made the US Open final, another USO SF, a French Open SF, another French QF and an Australian Open QF. Additionally she's won 2 Premier titles.

She's 3 games away from breaking the 3 year streak.

Also i'm ecstatic to see Kuznetsova still smashing it on the tour!

Crazy month for her, couldn't defend her Washington title due to visa issues, now in a Premier 5 SF! Iconic.

Keys, unfortunately, is kind of the epitome of a brainless ball basher. She has a habit of hitting herself out of matches just as well as she can hit her way through them...

Also agreed on Kuznetsova. Always liked her game, and glad to see she's still in such great shape at 34 years old. Is Kuzzy poised to get another USO title on the 15th anniversary of her first one?? :sneaky:

**** venus double faults to give keys a chance to serve for the match. Why of all times is there no Madison meltdown of any sorts.

Barty now just one Kuznetsova win away from regaining the #1 ranking. Can set a nice buffer if she can win the title as well.

Osaka defending title points at the US Open so she'll need a bit of a miracle to get back to #1, looks like it'll be between Barty and Pliskova with Osaka and Halep with an outside chance. If Barty wins Cincy then that might rule out Osaka and Halep.

Great win for Keys.

SF lineup complete:

(1) Barty v (WC) Kuznetsova
(16) Keys v Kenin

2 slam champs, 1 slam finalist, 1 rising start having a breakout year. Not bad. That second SF will delight the American fans.

Sveta cracks me up. I nearly died when she was asked what the key was to getting these results and she answered "probably getting my US visa".

Love everyone, Barty will get no 1 back if she reach final. Svetlana in beast mode is really awesome tho.

Agree with everyone that thinks Kuzy is still awesome. I was wondering the other day if she’s a Hall-of-Famer. I think she is.

Halep's worst result in 5 years at Canada-Cincy double. She made at least SF or better at both tournaments every year since 2015.

On the other hand, the good showing at those tournaments was followed by not so good results at USO. USO is her worst slam with only one QF (2016) and one SF (2015) and 1R exits in the past 2 years.

Will she reverse the odds this time around and have a deep run at USO or end up with the most underwhelming North American leg in her career so far? I guess will see in few weeks. I hope she is injury free for USO so she can focus on her game unhindered.

I know he can be tiresome with all that Serena talk and I also know he's a grown man who doesn't need defending, but I was also puzzled with the whole Halep and retirements affair. Firstly, Halep has never been the type of player who's retiring left and right and running like a rabbit the next day up to this point. She plays a gruelling type of game and, as a result, she actually went straight to hospital after a final for exhaustion - not a thing you see everyday. Secondly, even if she pulled that trick, she wouldn't be the first one to do it.

It's not pretty, sure, but it's not unheard of. Hell, Serena pulled it way before this postpartum period, not even showing up at all. So, I don't see why Halep should be more maligned for it than others. Thirdly, just because she played Cincinnati that doesn't mean she was feigning it. . It's not that hard to believe she stopped for fearing of making what it might have seemed a "light" thing much worse and ended up recovering within few days, especially being a young athletic woman.

Can't believe that AD was trying to make a case against Simona. Cited 2 examples of her retiring in the past 2 yrs where he didnt bother to look into the very valid reasons for those retirements. Dehydration & heat exhaustion in DC in 1 case. Diagnosed (MRI) with herniated disc days after the 2nd case. Had been dealing with Achilles as well as back problems at that time. Ended the 2018 season early (Sept) cuz of that.

I recall Serena flaking out of BOWC (Stanford) on several occassions starting in the late 00s. She would commit to play & then pull out just before event... not just once or twice. Never even showed up for autographs, interviews or other tournament events. In 2008, she was down a set & an early break in the 2nd set vs qualifier, Aleksandra Wozniak. She retired a few games into the 2nd set.

This might have very well been legit. But she did play in a subsequent event. She ended up winning the US Open a few weeks later. She had such a rep for flaking out at Stanford, the tournament organizers stopped putting her in the foreground for promo banners, pamphlets & bus ads prior to the event... they started putting her in the background cuz they didnt trust her to show up. Not sure what happened last year, but she put in a dismal performance against Konta in 1R (6-1, 6-0). To her credit, SW did win at Stanford 3x. But she's had a troubled history with this Stanford/SJSU event.

(y) Yes, an amazing run by Svetlana. For her resume, she has 2 slam titles in singles and another 2 for doubles. That alone should qualify her for HoF.

She lost in 1R at SW19 last month. A couple of good rounds at Toronto. But then Simona rolled over her quite easily in the third round there. Thought that might have been the handwriting on the wall. But she has risen from the grave here in Cincy. I wish her continued success here. Be nice if she makes another splash at USO as well, which she won 15 years ago (in singles).

Kuznetsova has already jumped 71 ranks to #82. A win puts her at #62. Another win in the final jumps her to #44. That would be an incredible leap up the leaderboard.

Thanks to Kuznetsova's victory over Barty, Osaka will remain in the first place in the WTA ranking and will be the 1st seed at the US Open.

Amazing effort by Sveta.
Great stuff, really happy for her.

I hope she wins the whole thing. She missed defending DC due to her Visa snafu...and she seems to be making every effort to prove herself now. She always been that player to do well when no one expects her to, and here she is doing it again
