Tons of smart tennis people on this thread so I need help.

Problem: Tennis elbow using Solinco Hyper G 17 at 50lbs in my new Blade 18x20.

Background: no tennis elbow demoing Yonex HD and Wilson Blade full poly for multiple singles matches.

Solution: restringing tomorrow

Question: what string setup?

Thanks!
I suggest stringing between 44-47 lbs. 44 works best for me after going down from 47 with full poly.

where is the pain? same here.. been using hyper g 17 at 49/46 for about close to 8 hours of hitting... no TE but yeah... some shoulder and slight tightness in forearm etc... I do think even though, it does not feel stiff HyperG does work the elbow a bit...

Comfort i would recommend Grapplesnake Alpha or Signum Pro x-perience... they are both high on comfort. very high and very respectable strings.. XP could be deemd to have a little bit too high of power for some's liking...

I will echo the sentiment of those who say that your string tension might be a little bit High. I strung my demo of the 18X20 at 46 pounds and thought I could go a couple of pounds lower.

An idea might be to try one of the known soft poly strings if you still want a full bed, something like Cyclone Tour in a thin gauge at somewhere around 46 pounds.

Great advice, thanks. The pain is on the inside of.my elbow, think of the part my elbow might touch my ribcage if I put my arm onto my side. I wonder what tension tw strings full poly demos at, the demos were fine.

That’s actually golfers elbow. I’ve struggled with it in the past - stiff strings, stiff racquets, racquets with a lot of weight in the head, or any combination thereof are all culprits. I like to arm the ball on the serve and forehand too which doesn’t help.

Also, unfortunately string tension is not an apples to apples comparison. So knowing what tension TW used may not be that helpful. 50 lb on a manual lockout will not be the same as 50 lb on a constant pull. Stringer technique is a factor too, for example, I pull my crosses tight because I apply pressure to them while they are tensioning (I use a constant pull). In my opinion tight crosses help with stringbed longevity. Also I don’t have to straighten the crosses much after I take the racquet off the stringer which the OCD in me appreciates.

Best thing you can do is isolate one or two variables and compare results. It’s definitely an iterative process. Good luck!

Try IsoSpeed cream. One of the softest polys available. Thinnest gauge is 1.23m. Decent spin and is a bit more lively (similar to Hyper G in that regard) than most polys.

What tension and gauge did you use? I got a set of the Tourna string as well for testing
Used tourna silver 7 tour 21/20 kgs.

Ice code 1.25 really had that ‘alu power’ magic for a longer time than alu power. Maybe for 3 or 4 hours. Will have to test it again. But all of the sudden at my 4th hit with it, it had dropped tension like crazy. Like 5 kgs on rackettune which is one of the highest I had ever seen. Was still playable and comfort was there, but the magic was long gone and balls started to sail

Try Tierone Black Night 1.23 a softer poly with very good playability and consistency

Damn, I grabbed some Ice code to try after your initial review. This doesn’t sound good compared to Max power rough.

Played with Ice code 1.20 tonight, albeit in a different racquet. This might be a controversial opinion here but I found it very average. Control is not great, and the response unpredictable at times. Feel was ok though. I find Max Power Rough superior in every category.

I am not thaat surprised... I tried it once and I found the level of power higher then average and level of control lower than average with the ball flying sometimes... Maybe the best version of ice code is the 16g (1.30)? I will try it soon...

I can tell you my opinion on ice code 1.20 in one week. My experience with 1.25 strung at 21 kgs was very good. To me it was better than alu power when fresh, and it lasted longer. But it had a sudden extreme tension drop of 5 kgs after about 10 hours.

Rslyon, which I loved in my Angells, I hated in my blade. Lyon felt stiff and very boardy in the blade v7. Couldnt get enough feel and power.
Might try it again at 19kgs. At 21 it was too stiff.

Folk,
Session two with blade 18x20. Just not working for me. I’m more used to the traditional heavy weight and headlight balance. Mine spec is exactly as posted online and just not loving balance. But to each their own! Thanks for all the info on this thread and look for mine on classified.

is tailweighting or adding a leather grip out of the question?

To the 4G 1.25 fans: the v7 18x20 with this string is fire. I wouldn’t usually buy it but I got several sets heavily discounted. This setup gives you a very predictable response and has a soft, rubbery plushness. By contrast the revolve 1.25 felt plasticy (still soft though). I think the string’s firmness matches the frame’s softness really well and reels in some of the power. Swing out, no problem, however, if you don’t commit to the stroke, the ball will not have much on it. I wouldn’t consider it a spin machine in terms of loop or rpm, but it hits a very heavy ball. I understand the hype around this setup now. Strung at 44 on my constant pull, I do not think I would go higher.

So after a few more hours hitting with Hyper-G, it has lost the pop and tension maintenance is not as good as Hawk Touch. The string feels dead and doesn't have the snap back as before. I think it doesn't have the durability of Hawk Touch so time to restring it and see how Technifibre Black Code 4S feels.
Interesting... my hyperG adventure is going pretty good.. power is low for sure but spin is plenty.. control is very good... i think maybe few lbs lower would put the power back... what really works for me is that picks up the launch angle nicely.. good string... borderline elbow comfort.. walking the thin line of discomfort/comfort.. ill try few more strings.. cut the hyper g now...alpha and signum pro-xperience are next..

18/20s are great. The more even balance definitely takes some getting used to.

Agreed. My 18x20 is stock plus a Wilson pro overgrip. All in weight is just under 329 grams strung with 1.25 poly. Balance is 3.5-4 HL and swingweight is 334-335. This thing is a freight train. Unreal how big it hits and how stable it is for such a low static weight. Two handed backhand is fine, but forehand is sacrificing a little racquet head speed (I am 6’5, I have long arms), but the slower swing speed actually helps my consistency.

Balance is awesome if you have more modern strokes. Very personal there but you get a light swinging frame with a big sw it can be great fit.

Did short ball drills for 30 minutes in the heat late in the week and i can get real sharp angles with this frame.

Those with elbow issue should try synthetic gut. It plays well and you will be surprised bit the sweet spot is.. The new Blade seems to work very well with it. Strung mine at 50 pounds. 16 gauge, feels and plays great with no wrist or elbow pains. Downside you will string more often, but really a step up for poly pains. Over time ploy takes a toll of joints.

Main thing i notice after weeks of using the blade is that my arms feels nothing. Its fantastic. Full poly and lots of hitting and i really only feel it in my legs. Really love this frame so much.

And yeah syn gut would be a nice alternative if needed. Low cost and the 18x20 will keep it around for a little bit before it breaks.

I personally like 1.25 gauge poly in this frame even though i know a lot of you all like 1.20. Seems like the 1.25 gives me a lot of time and doesnt die or break too quickly.

I don’t get the hype in Hyper G (pun intended). Sure, at its peak, it probably has the best combination of control and spin. Unfortunately, that peak lasts for a good couple of sets. Playability is trash. It’s also deceptively stiff. It’s the string that gave me golfers elbow.

Let’s be honest, what string is good for more than a couple sets? Most lose playability and I can’t think of one that feels great from the moment it’s strung to the moment it snaps.

Supposedly 4G is a head above the rest. We shall see. Revolve 1.25 white played pretty well for about 4-6 hours and then dropped off really fast. Strings stuck out of place like a synthetic gut or multi.

Here's some FH's I hit at the end of a 90 minute session. Wanted to see how I swung when I was tired. I'll get some fresh ones up too and probably have before and after of some backhands. Just takes a while to get these videos chopped down from 4K, so ill stick to 1080p 60FPS I think.

Are you playing with someone named Junior? Looks like a buddy of mine

4g is a string that should retain playability for a while. 1.25 should give you 8-12 hours depending who and how you play. At the price its at its tough to pull the trigger when max power rough is around but i may revist it. I used it a lot in the 2011. That was a really stiff combo though.

Anybody has issues with the paint on the V7? How is everybody's PJ holding up? Both my V7s have about 15 hours on them and they both look great without any paint peeling or marks but I don't know if that's because the PJ is hardy or I am being extra careful with the rackets.

Same, easily double the hours, maybe more. No issues with the paint so far.

Speaking of paint, really cool how Wilson lets you make a custom PJ, too bad they don't offer it on the v7s:

Somebody said in november they will start offering customization for v7 and clash... i would go for it if it wasnt for the QC.. at least at TW i got identical specs as my other one which i love. This racuqet truly ended my relentless 1 year racquet search...

I would love a glossy v7. I wonder if Wilson has lower tolerance for custom pieces.

Holding up much better than my ProStaff’s did, they were chipped within 2 weeks, by just putting them in my bag.

Got well over 20 hours of hitting and even scrapping court without any issues.

i don't get that. To me it maintains tension and playability really well. TW playtesters thought it did maintain it's characteristics pretty consistently as well.. they actually rated it pretty high for a co-poly. It has also decent scores for tension maintenance and playability duration (depending on the gauge) in string forum as well. My experience confirms similar. Maybe it's the strings pattern or something but I would definitely not describe it as "launchy hot mess".. far from it.

holding up ok. 1st one had a tiny paint chip first day.. no idea how it happened but nothing since... my 2nd one is my fault.. after i got my 2nd one and was doing all the scientific lab measurements in the dining room table (weight, balance, sw manual)... i was so excited with matched pairs and shadow swinging flew out of my hand and landed on the floor... scratched side of the head just a little bit but no biggie...luckily missed the furniture or else wife would have killed me.. drives her insane when i do shadow swings in the house.. hahah
