Really!! Used to play at that park when in med. school (Albert Einstein, in the Bronx) and they had what they called clay courts -- they were actually garden variety dirt. Always easy to get a court because absolutely everyone else was there to play basketball.

Do we know why the Connecticut Open was discontinued? It has been the played in New Haven the week prior to the US Open since 1998. Steffi won it in '98. Venus won it the subsequent 4 years in a row. In the last edition, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Carla SN.

I recall that Simona had planned to play this event last year but apparently had not counted on reaching the finals at Montreal and Cincy, the previous 2 weekends. Appeared to have faded in the Cincy final and decided it would be too much to play New Haven 2 days later.

What is truly odd and puzzling about the struggle and sale of the Connecticut Open is that it was the third best attended WTA tournament last year.

http://www.ctopen.org

"The Connecticut Open, the third best attended women’s-only WTA tournament in 2018 and a not-for-profit 501c3 charitable organization, has generated more than $10 million annually in economic impact for the City of New Haven and State of Connecticut and provides significant philanthropic support for local organizations, as well as attracting the top female players from around the globe to New Haven the week before the US Open."

https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2019/02/05/ct-open-leaves-new-haven-2/

"Last year, the Connecticut Open was the third-most attended Women’s Tennis Association-only event in the world — with attendance topping 50,000 for the fourth consecutive year."

If anyone has seen the Bronx Open on TC, they will most certainly NOT be challenging for most fans at any event, even with free admission. Pretty sad.

Just saw a replay of the end of Camila's SF match. She came back from 3-6 down in the deciding breaker against Wang. Plays Linette for the title now.
