That's the first time I've watched Mladenovic in a long while due to by how much she was... besides her tennis, to stay polite. Eurosport France titled their article roughly "Mladenovic upsets Osaka's ghost". That's a mild way to put it considering how Osaka played: double-faults, returns three feet (or three metres, no difference honestly) behind the baseline among other things. She kept trying to slap big backhand returns on kick serves that while slow, were bouncing shoulder or head high... It looked more like Osaka didn't want to do what it takes to win, rather than her not being able to win if she just played "right".

If Simona can take the title she’ll only be a couple hundred points behind Osaka who has to defend her Indian Wells title soon. Might be a short run as #1 for Naomi.

That was also Naomi’s first match as a #1 player. Great job girl. Meanwhile, Mladenovic hadn’t won a match this year since before this week.

Halep back to #1 will be short lived anyway as she has some 3000+ points to defend between IW and RG which will be very tough.

Looks like fun next couple days. Kinda hoping my day gets cancelled tomorrow so that I can watch Mugu + some of the other matches.

Simona won 12 points in a row broke Tsurenko twice and win 7-5 in 2nd.

Honestly she's so good if only she's not planted on the baseline her attack will be scary!

Agreed, Halep just seems to find a way to win. Signs of a true champion. I’m very impressed with her style of play. I think she’ll be reclaiming her number one ranking by the end of the season barring any injury.

I don't know what the worst result of the Osaka match was.
Confirming she's a bit of a dummy or giving Mladenovic (of all people) a confidence boost.

But no where near as vocal, or loyal.

It's pretty vocal, maybe because she's losing so they are cheering (Based on what I watch). Her fanbase is growing if she's continue playing good which is good for tennis. The 2 biggest superstars on women tennis (Serena and Maria) are playing part time.
Simona has a solid fan base and we need more!

Kiki fell to Suarez Navarro 7-5/7-5.

I think Pliskova will beat Alison (Why):p Riske.

Svitolina over Muguruza

Sabalenka over Bencic

All should be very good matches though

edit: everyone’s favorite underdog Hsieh Su-wei beat Kerber? Her unorthodoxed style of play really stifles her opponents.

I agree. I watched also, but I got the impression the crowd were trying to lift Osaka. Halep has a large number of vocal supporters where ever she goes. No bad thing given how sparse arenas are generally outside the majors and joint ATP/WTA tournaments

Angie just did not try on that 3rd set. It's hard against Su Wei when she's on cause you've got to run chasing the ball like crazy especially for someone like Angie who did not have serve and power.

Kerber narrowly escaped Hsieh treatment at 2018 AO, but not this time around.

Hsieh can now put Kerber on her big-name, GS holders, wins list along with Muguruza ('18 AO) and Halep ('18 Wimbledon).

Hsieh is becoming a player that can go deep into the draw! Has Hsieh finally got endorsements for racquets, clothing or shoes?

Who's the commentator in the WTATV? (Sounded like the guy in 'There's nothing such a fish' podcast) Great in depth analysis.
