Barty and Bencic into the SF from their group, they join Svitolina from the other group.

Final spot between Halep and Pliskova.

has Kiki injured herself in the last 4 games? no I don't see it. Obviously she is only interested in an easy win, very unsportsmanlike!

What kind of BS reaction is this? Bertens has played 8 weeks non-stop and already indicated before the Finals that she was physically done. She clearly hurt herself at 5-3, losing 5 games in a row as a result.

That's 100% her own decision, no one was pointing a gun against her forehead!
She did not need to play 8 weeks in a row, she did not need to be in Shenzhen, or even Zhuhai, just ask Konta, Vondrousova or Kerber.
If she is tired or exhausted, she had the option to withdraw and enjoys a nice sunshine on a beach.
If she decides to play, either for the sake of money or points, then better be prepared for gruesome matches.
What Kiki showed us tonight, was she was only interested in an easy match for the semi, she had no intention for another gruesome 3 set, she had no plan for that.
She wanted the money, the points, semi or potential final but she wants them to be "easy" for her, otherwise she is done.
So yes she is unsportsmanlike!

Bertens retires and Bencic wins 7-5 1-0.

Can’t blame Kiki, she’s played basically every week since the USO.
but unfortunately still very poor sportsmanship from her, she was not fully committed to this match, she was gambling on an easy win for her to through. Kiki is not alone on this, many "tired", "exhausted" or "already injured" players would choose the same approach, play first and see what happens next. But the difference is, how to end the match if you find yourself in trouble and the match will not go as you expected. You should finish the match and let your opponent win, it's their moment. I have the same issue with Djokovic in USO, he should let Stan enjoy the victory because Stan was a better player, regardless of reasons why Stan played better in that match.

Right, that's why she played (and won) a gruesome match against Barty of course, coming back from a set and break down  Your reaction is a joke. If you don't like Bertens then fine, but your reaction doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Don't understand what you tried to say here. Last time I checked, she was playing Bencic tonight, not Barty. Anyway, You need to learn how to read but more importantly, learn to how to debate. Calling people Joke or BS won't add you any valid points, quite the contrary, it will only confirm "lack of maturity".

So ... having retired from the last match, is Bertens withdrawing for the rest of the tournament? Who's the alternate? I wonder how many alternates are on standby for this WTA Final.
So many players are at their near-injury level this late in the season.

Didn't watch the match, so can't judge. She just burn out in my opinion, having made final in Zhuhai last week.
But should she stay and get bageled? I would say no.
Kiki has always have Thiem like schedule in regards of non stop 8 weeks (She also looking to qualify so made sense), she can't do it as much this year as she has the privilege/ruling of top 10 from last year.

Well there is no more match for her anyways. anyways.
I thought Bertens v Kvitova match is still not played? Not that it'll make any difference with SF lineup. But, an alternate can get some extra $$ and experience playing in WTA Final??

Sorry didn't get the "anyways, anyways" reference :D

She was not injured during the match, just tired or exhausted or in your word "burnt out". Her schedule is her own decision, she cannot blame it on someone else or use that as an excuse

Bertens could have

1. withdrawn before the match, no one would blame her, instead we will praise her for that comeback win against Barty

or

2. completed the match if she wanted to gamble here, she was playing her chance for easy through to semi.

But once she found out it will not be easy, she chose to quit, that's just too bad. If she stayed and got bagelled, we would feel sorry for her, but it's really not that a big deal, as you said, she played non stop for 8 weeks , everyone would understand.

On a side note, an injured Serena did not quit in 2004 WTA final match, Sharapova won the championship, but Serena did not get bagelled. And in 2013 RR, an injured/exhausted Azarenka barely moved at all, she lost to Li Na in a quick two set but didn't get bagelled either. In both cases, Serena or Azarenka could have retired but once they decided to show up on court, they finished the match, that's the right thing to do.

From Bertens now former coach.. not sure I agree with this I mean her year wasn't that bad. Made the Zhuhai final and just beat the #1 in Shenzhen. Won Premier Mandatory Madrid this year too.

Seems strange.

Defending champs Babos/Mladenovic defeat Mertens/Sabalenka and go 3-0 in their group. They'll face Stosur/Zhang in a rematch of this years Aus Open final.

The pair are now on a 6 match winning streak at the YEC. Babos is actually on a 9 match winning streak after winning the title in 2017 with Hlavackova and then last year with Mladenovic.

It's bad in term of her goal probably. Not even making 2nd week of GS (French Open is her biggest woe but it's not exactly due to coaches but still considering last year she lost to Kerber).
That's exactly what Kiki needs, performing on GS. Will be interesting who will be her new coach.
She only made 3 2nd week on 30 tries. 31-30 in total.

It’s not that strange TBH. She was already traveling with a different coach after the USO and that seemed to go well especially the past couple weeks. Plus her main goal of going deep at slams obviously wasn’t met.

It’s really a case of a great coaching relationship where the magic just isn’t there anymore at some point. Happens all the time and honestly 4 years is pretty long.

Last year Eli needed three sets to win almost all of her matches. Now 6/6 in round robin, winning both marathon tiebreaks. Not bad at all. Hopefully she keeps this up. (y)

Agree. It's a ridiculous rule that you could use to your advantage if so inclined.
I must admit this tournament has not been interesting for quite a while.
In 1977, Borg and Vilas actually gave walkovers to their opponents in the third match after winning their first 2 matches! They still were allowed to play in the semis. The RR format has always been rather controversial.

Yes. There was something similar with Evert and Wade with the Tour Finals in the 70s.
I vaguely remember reading that Wade got the rough end of the deal.

Halep just get bagelled and lost 5 games in a row in 3rd set. Managed to break back and yet failed serving to stay in the match.

Really showing intensity on court and commitment to the game. One must ask why does WTA not promoting her?

Useless trolling and cherry picking. Let's keep promoting Sharapova instead, makes much more sense based on her recent results

On the doubles side, it looks like Babos/Mladenovic-Sabalenka/Mertens could strike a deal to both go through and eliminate Schuurs/Gronefeld by letting Sabalenka/Mertens win 2-1 in sets.
Good to see that they didn't make this deal and simply played for the win (even though after the 2nd set it briefly looked like they did).

I just think Halep was given the appropriate amount of coverage by WTA not like of what this forum said it was.
Absolutely not true. The WTA on Facebook doesn't promote any where near her status deserves. And this is in line with Twitter and other social media outlets.
And, she definitely has the largest fan base in terms of tournament revenue.
And in terms of commitment.... really! At least she showed up!
Any way it's simple enough to prove- just look for yourself.
Personally, l have no bias towards Halep, but do think she's good for the game, grunting aside.
She's personable, eloquent and not obsessed with her own media presence.

lol, sounds like an extra motivation to defeat them just to break their streak

well I think that is because she is no longer # 1. The official WTA coverage of their top players is very consistent IMO, of course the Williams sisters and Sharapova are a different story, but other than those 3, the top billings or headliners are always focused on the ranking. Back to the days when Halep was #1 (but slamless), she got the most coverage (and a lot of backlash too from fans on social media). Now she has multiple slams but no longer # 1, her exposure is back to the level of other top 10 players like Pliskova, Kvitova...There are no doubt Osaka, Barty and Andreescu now grab the most attention from WTA, but they earned that, not only they are new faces, but they are higher ranked and newly minted slam winners. If you think Halep deserves a bit more, then I would argue WTA probably should give more credit to Kerber, but Kerber dropped out of top 10, even though she is a veteran and multiple slam winner, her current ranking is just not able to justify heavier coverage at the moment.

Whilst I appreciate your comments l disagree some points. When Halep was number 1 she still got less promotion from the WTA, much like Davenport did years before. I recall many people commented on social media that Halep got less press than others ranked below her. I will say this may also be down to Halep herself, much like Davenport, are not really in to self promotion - neither are a Serena or Maria that actively encourage it.
Kerber is a bit different in that once attaining no.1 she was absolutely shocking. Truly shocking.

I would love to see Barty ends up winning this since her post Wimbledon and USO open was disappointing and lost to Osaka in Beijing. Kinda like I want her to justify her WTA player of the year over Bianca Andreescu.

Well that's a surprise.

Bencic takes the first set 7-5 over Svitolina who hadn't dropped a set all week. She was the first player to do so since Serena in 2013.
