Barty is probably one of the most common complete current WTA player.

Her overhead technique is definitely very good.

This is just too damn good. Both players playing well. Svitolina approaches the net thanks to Barty baiting her but Ash hits the winner.

Holy **** I can't believe it.

She's the first Australian Player to win the WTA Finals since Evonne Goolagong in... 1976!!!

I couldn't think of a more deserving player to win the final tournament of the 2010's.

Congratulations Ashleigh Barty.

You're an inspiration to tennis.

Big congrats to me and @PDJ for correctly predicting Barty in the poll as the winner of the WTA Finals when this thread was created. :)

Never doubted my home girl, sweetest women on tour and truly no better champion.

Congrats Ash.

There are few things on this sports planet more painful than watching the runner-up sit there waiting for the trophy ceremony.

check the ridiculous 20+ tournaments Bencic and Bertens played this season, I guess they are taking notes from Wozniacki and Radawanska WTA play book, how they were able to move on court in Shenzhen is beyond me!

Congrats to Barty on winning her 1st WTA Finals title in her debut appearance. Coupled with her maiden Slam and achieving the #1 ranking she has confirmed her status as the best player of the season. Whoever foresaw this happening for her at the start of the season back in January?

She becomes the 5th player in a row to win a maiden title at the WTA Finals.

Congrats Ash. Pity this wasn't on free to air tv in Australia.

The prizemoney is extraordinary. Did they sell enough tickets or tv subscriptions to pay for that?

Pretty sure from sponsorships, the big Chinese and Japanese companies are footing the bill, I think Osaka is the reason Shiseido is on board.

Well done Ashley, wonderful player and such a genuinely nice person. To think I was playing at the Richland Tennis Centre in Brisbane's west when she was a young'un learning the game and I didn't give her a second glance just goes to show how much I recognise tennis talent!!!!

Will be media feeding frenzy when she returns to Australia this week!

Will be busy for Fed Cup preparation. Ticket is 100 bucks for decent seat. I really contemplate to buying Sunday tickets but France is just not really interesting team.

You mean there were no Australian TV channels showing an Aussie tennis player in the most important tennis final after the Slams??

I've never understood how this could possibly make commercial sense. Hisense sponsored a court at the Aussie Open for years. Don't know if it ever sold any tvs because of it.

Wow this is insane. Turns out nobody knew the rules regarding points for players who play both WTA elite Trophy and the finals (Bertens and Kenin).

It was said that whichever tournament gave the player the higher points would count. Turns out if you play the WTA Finals then it cancels your Elite Trophy points. Huge blow to Bertens and Kenin who now lose

Kenin would've gotten 160 points from Zhuhai but only gets 125 from one match in Shenzhen.
Bertens would've gotten 440 points but only gets 375 now.

I imagine the prize money is not cancelled too though? Seems a risky move as you say but perhaps it's seen as a gamble, could have also paid off big time for Bertens. Imagine a player one year wins Elite Trophy and then Finals too?

I tried Shiseido because Ana Ivanovic tho, but yeah does anybody even use Hisense? My TV at work use Hisense but that's the only time I see Hisense.

Sure they do, Hisense is selling very well in US now, it has nothing to do with AO though, maybe a little. Tennis fans shopping for tv would tell themselves I heard this name before, they had a stadium called Hisense...I think I just explained the power of advertisment.

Back to Hisense, the stadium was forever linked to Li Na, there is a reason Li's matches during the first week were almost exclusively arranged in Hisense arena, it's not a coincidence. When Li showed up court, the broadcasters and the journalists started their live reporting "it's a sunny afternoon in Melbourne, women' second round match, Li Na in Hisense arena... " that's how the match unfolded in media. Li Na has no commercial relationship with Hisense, but Hisense got a hold of her name anyway, that's the connection the sponsors are looking for, sometimes you can't even buy that.

I don't think Naomi Osaka has endorsement deals with Shiseido, but it doesn't really matter, in the next 5 years Osaka will be there in Shenzhen, and Shiseido will be mentioned hundreds of times in Japan along with Osaka's win or lose.

Well there is no more match for her anyways. anyways.

If you know the reference with the underline ;) @jwardb @FakeEmpire

Sorry for the late response, but these past two weeks were very nerve-wrecking for me professionally wise and, as such, I barely watched or followed the tournament.
I think you're referencing the "Pristine" lyrics by your avatar, even though I always thought she says anyway, anyway with a freak accent. Man, I'll miss attending as many gigs as I attended when I were at the college now that I'll work in an island for roughly 5 years, but I'll try to sneak a music festival here and there, whenever I can.
My favourite song of hers is Full Control though. That chorus and that intro are undeniable.

Shame about Bencic's injury (it's a never-ending story with her), but Barty was a worthy winner, having defeated a red-hot Svitolina in the final, no less.

I also don't particularly agree with the perception of less worthy WTA finals winners because they've never won a major or lost 2 matches in round robin or whatever. This is a separate tournament, with specific rules. If one plays by the rules and defeats seemingly more worthy opponents, it's a fair win. I believe I had already expressed this view before, but it pains me to see people devaluing Aga or Cibulkova, when they won this fair and square. It may not fit your ideal scenario, but it's legitimate and no less worthy.
