Osaka gets it done in the end in 3 sets. Petra put up a good fight but ends up losing her 4th consecutive match at the WTA Finals (lost all 3 matches last year).

Glad Naomi win. Good win, good match, Petra was good but I don't think Naomi will ever lose to Kvitova. She can play with shape as displayed here while not being too passive.

Kvitova can pull magical moment here and there but lack of consistency of course while Naomi can drag the play. Plus even her serve is getting readable by Petra towards the end of 3rd, the speed consistently 180 Km/h gave a lot of trouble.

I'm not disputing that, but sometimes it seems like Belinda can't string a couple of decent returns for a long amount of time.
Bencic was already serving well during the USO. I admit I had my doubts about its staying power, but it does seem like it is here to stay. It's not a powerful serve, but she places it well, even under pressure.

My stream is really, really behind, but Bencic wins the first.

And she does it!

Ash Barty wins her first match on debut at the WTA Finals by beating Belinda Bencic 6-7 6-1 6-2. With that win, Barty also secures the 2019 year end #1 ranking.

She started the year ranked #15, will finish ranked #1. 5 years after she left the sport to go play cricket and after 3 years since she returned to the sport. World number 1, amazing.

Taking a quick look at the doubles, Strycova, Mladenovic and Sabalenka all in contention for the #1 ranking. Quite amazing really, all accomplished singles players. Strycova with the Wimbledon’s SF this year, Sabalenka a top 15 singles player and just won Wuhan and Zhuhai and Mladenovic former top 10 in singles.

Strycova is the one in prime position to finish year end #1 but I think i’m going to tip Sabalenka to finish the year as #1. Amazing really since both Mertens and Sabalenka were playing singles last week in Zhuhai, now playing doubles in Shenzhen. Mladenovic would need some sort of miracle to finish as #1, she’s already 760 points behind Strycova.
