I saw enough of it to see why Bertens won.
Combination of a few factors.

First Bertens was out-serving Kvitova, with powerful serves that set up many points.
Second, Kvitova was tentative and off-form today, making too many unforced errors.
She didn't have a strategy really.

It was Bertens who was moving Kvitova around the court most of the time.
To beat Bertens your game has to be on (including serve) and you have to hit aggressively
all the time. Mixing things up of course too.

Agreed, I just watched the highlights and your assessment was spot on. Kiki lost to Petra previously, so I’m sure this win was was a confidence booster for her. Should be a very interesting semi and even better final.

Wonder if we'll see Kvitova in Rome now that she lost in Madrid.

Hasn't played there since 2016 and has never gone past the QF.

Third set. Bencic played a great tiebreaker. I expect Halep to run away with the third set though.
You got that right. Had a feeling Halep would pull it out as she was the better player later in the second set but didn’t have a great tiebreak. Definitely didn’t think it’d be a 3rd set bagel though, you should’ve put some money on!

So the Madrid final will either be a rematch of the French Open final and Montreal final between Halep and Sloane or a rematch of the Cincinnati final between Halep and Bertens.

Halep also now just one one win away from taking the number one spot away from Osaka.

I feel the need to say that Osaka was two points away from the win against Bencic and also served for the match and yet lost and now could surrender that number one ranking.

Osaka will regroup for Rome and get the #1 back for FO!

Because she’s not good. #103 won’t get you in any main draws, & she’s not exactly a clay court specialist.

#2 seed in an ITF is about right.

Some pretty big names in the Rome qualie draw.

My gal Kiki Bertens is taking it to Stephens! Even with Bertens making some unforced errors too! 5-1 in the 1st with Stephen serving to stay in the set!

These WTA1000 has very limited seating. I think around 55-60 tour players including qualifiers and WCs! That why it important to keep your ranking below the low 50ish or else have to face going through the qualifying tournament!

Number #1 on the line for Halep. She has been looking very sharp. Kiki will need to serve better than today, but I think it’s possible she can do it. I like this final.

Kerber out of Rome, rough for her. Was in the running for #1 in Madrid, now she'll drop QF points in Rome and also has QF points to defend at the French.

Also, most of the focus has been on how well Halep is playing and how it seems like she'll win the title but let's take a look at Bertens.

If she wins the title, she'll jump 3 ranking spots in front of Pliskova, Svitolina and Kvitova for a new career high of #4 (!!).

She's up to #6 in the race rankings and will jump to #4 with the title.

She has no points to defend in Rome and only 3R points to defend at the French Open where she's a former SFist and will have a top 8 seed (possibly top 4 seed) for the first time.

It's old news now, but I just caught up with the match replay of the Bencic vs Osaka QF on wta.tv

An early match of the year contender imo. The level was extremely high and sustained. Both players are so good at taking the ball early, which is always great to see on clay.

I like this final also, but I think Halep is just too strong. She is clicking on all cylinders, the clay isn’t an issue for her either. I like Kiki (her game, sportsmanship, etc), but I don’t see her beating Simona.

Been impressed with bertens' inside out fh in the past but that one was baaad .

Even had a sitter forehand on the previous point...
