Giorgi, despite the loss, seems really impressive to me. She goes for the winners and succeeds at that a lot. Think I'm going to become a fan. Opinions about the Italian out there? Certainly she isn't new to the scene, I know.

Her father is still manages and coaches Camilla! She been finally raising her game in 2018 but does not play well when she is behind or when she gets broken. Good front runner against players who are same level or below.

Halep looks to have knocked some of the rust off from lack of matchplay and is now up a break in the second.
Very entertaining match.

Halep doesn't really seem to be going for much.

Like I know she's not a basher, but I feel like she normally hits with more pace than this.

Strange look when the world number 1 isn’t the betting favourite against the world number 15. The odds were right though as Barty lands her first win over a #1 by beating Halep 6-4 6-4.

Slow Stephens looking a bit gassed out there.

Putin really starting to get the upper hand on the American now.

Just a warm up match for Halep but it provides that in the beginning of 2019, Halep is beatable to the other WTA tour!

Sloan has this tendency to letup when going is good. and Putinseva is very dangerous player,, small tiny girl with power, that is dangerous. and why does her grommet have holes in there ?

Putinseva also lost some weight. that seem to be helping her

Barty takes the first set on a bad UE from Halep! We've got ourselves a match on our hands!

Was really Halep expecting to overwhelm Barty in the 9th game. Barty was down 0-40 on her own serve but found another gear and never looked back.

Kudos to Barty. While she only won a few more points than Halep, 69-65, she played more aggresively and won more of the important points. Still, this is the first match that Simona had played in more than 3 months (since Sept). And she's not really been in top form since Aug 2018 when she was in back-to-back finals in Canada and Cincy.

Halep is always looking beatable to the others throughout 2018.

Not so much until after August. After finals in 2 subsequent weeks (Canada & Cincy), she was not the same. Burned out & injured. Pulled out of Connecticut, Fell early at USO & Wuhan, Retired after 1 set in R1 at the China Open late in Sept. And then pulled out of the Kremlin Open in Oct w/o playing at all.
.

Sloan trend is loose in opening rounds of the small tournaments like Sydney and go deep or win the big GS tournaments. That the way I want to play if I were on the tour!

Petra/Angie is gonna be a rough hour for a lot of us.

Kerber-Kvitova Highlights:
I watched this, and as much as I dislike Kerber, there's not much she can do when Kvitova plays like this. Which she won't as she'll now probably be hyped to win the AO but crash out in the first week.
I'd like to be wrong.... but......

This is a great match, Bertens is as tough as nails. I thought Barty was going to take the first.
