Roger's so nervous. Never see him go for block returns on the forehand side. He was desperate to just put that BP back in play.

Some match-ups are tougher when you're 38. That's all there is to it. Jusk look at Coric.

Thiem unsettles him because he is 38. He is not something Roger hadn't dealt with before.
Wake up. There is no such thing as "matchup issue" on any sport, stop with the excuses. It's like saying that the world chess champion defeats his opponents because they have a "mathcup issue" with him, rather than simply because he is better than all of his opponents. In tennis, no single ATG has a losing H2H against a non-ATG if they have played more than 10 matches.

Thiem is better on clay and hard courts than 2019 Federer. You can blame age, but not any "matchup issue". In 2019, Federer has only been clearly better than Thiem outside grass. The reason why Thiem dominates Federer 3-0 in 2019 is simple: Thiem in 2019 is a better tennis player than Federer outside grass.

Federer for certainly have little mental block vs Thiem. He lost ALL close matches vs Thiem.

I tuned in at the beginning of the second set. Three things are clear to me:

1) This was obviously not Federer's day, very surprised by his level. Maybe too much pressure knowing that he had to win this match in order to make the SF?
2) I was impressed by Thiem's level tonight. I haven't seen him play on HC for a long time, but he made big improvements on HC.
3) This WTF is really Djokovic's to lose

The one time Gramps could have been useful (regarding the YE #1 race), he might not even make it out of round robin. He will have to beat Djokovic for that... :sneaky:

I don't know who is playing match 3 last of Djoko and Nadal but that feels like could be the key. Whoever plays last can decide who their SF opponent will be if Nadal and Djokovic gets to that scenario.

Tough loss. Hopefully Federer can at least scavenge a win from that bum Berrettini. If he goes 0-3 he should hang up the racquet this summer.

Roger could've been so much better.

But that was one of the best matches Thiem's ever played. Incredible to see his groundstrokes so consistent on a fast court where he's being rushed.

Wasn't aware Thiem led Fed 4-2 before today. Maybe because they tend to have close matches. Even this one was competitive for a straight set contest.

I imagine Federer will be good against Berrettini. But it just got complicated for him now.
