2019 Yonex Regna (Japanese exclusive)

I am huge fan of Regna and used for over 4+ years. My racketholism was almost cured since I bought less than 5 frames except gifts from family members. It was expensive but saved more money instead of testing many of rackets.

Most of Japanese stores sold out Regna for a while so I thought Yonex finally discontinued Regna after 4 years+ of productions and did not expect to release new Regna but shockingly Yonex will release 2019 version on March.
At his time, both 98 and 100 will be released together.
Looks like new paint job and new NAMD technology was applied. Very curious about new one T_T
I liked previous paint job because it shows bare graphite pattern at shaft area which makes one of the most unique rackets but Yonex covered the area with paint.

Not sure I will get new one anytime soon since the price went up and dollar is weak against Yen so 46000 yen is too much even though street price is close to 37000 yen with shipping it will be another $400+.
Probably wait a few years to get used one...Looking forward to watching Lafino review.....

Looks like PJ is matte finish which I don’t like.
Regna 98 has glossy finish and have better durability than Regna 100.
Extra finish helps durability...
Time to sell rackets to make a room for 2019 Regna but might need to sell at least 5+ frames in order to get just one haha.
I wish they make grip size 1 so I can just put one overgrip over original leather grip which is new but only grip 2 and 3 is available.

If you're a huge fan of the current version, why do you need to buy the new $450 version?
I like Regna line. Not just previous version. Also curious that what Yonex did for new Regna.
Yonex often changes character of rackets dramatically for next generation so it might not be just paint job.
It can be good thing or it can be bad thing though. I have 3 Regna 98 and 2 Regna 100 (Recently sold one Regna 98.). I thought Regna line was discontinued since most of Japanese stores sold out both 98 and 100 and did not restock for a while. I thought about getting two more used Regna 98 before it’s permanently gone but surprisingly I found info on new Regna.

I don’t think I will buy new Regna immediately and paying over $400.
I usually wait for lower prices or getting used one. I waited almost 2 years to get used Regna 100 so I could get about 50% off. Mostly I am a patient guy.......(but my first Regna 98 was exception) hahaha.

I love Regna 98 but I don't like it's replacement grip -- too rigid to hold.
So I replaced it with a Babolat Syntec Pro.

I use buying service which is pretty reasonable.

Yonex developed the grip with new material at that time and they thought it's very innovative material but almost no one liked the grip.
I replaced every grip from Yonex rackets such as AI, DR, SI etc....
Yonex changed replacement grips nowadays and that's what I usually use so that's good. looks like new regna grip is leather. Wish they make grip size 1 so I can use overgrip but only makes grip size 2 and 3.

Hope it will be a fair review haha.

Is this racket better compared to other Yonex ones then?

Is there any “better” rackets in the world?
It’s very subjective in my opinion.
It can be good for someone, it can be bad for someone.
Quality should be better than other Yonex rackets since it was only produced 200 rackets per a month. New carbon technology at shaft area and extra layers at hoops might not be easy to produce more rackets

Original Regna 98 paint job was very solid but they changed PJ to Regna 100 and It can have chips and paint scratches easiler than original. Unfortunately New Regna paint job is similar to previous Regna 100 so It’s slightly questionable for durability.

Regna’s Stiffness is 68 unstrung and about 65 strung so it’s not soft racket and 100 has higher stiffness. Even though it’s similar to vcore stiffness but feels less harshness than vcore.

Regna 100 has little more power and slightly higher trajectory than Regna 98.
Honestly Regna 98 is better for flat hitter in my opinion but not sure how much Yonex changed for new ones.

Regna is unique rackets and nothing like Regna because of spring like action from shaft. Unfortunately one can understand this weird frame action when you try......
Can’t describe in words haha.

Look forward to try 98 but might need to wait until the price will go down a little more or getting used one.

Makes me wanna break out my old Regna 98 to the courts now. The hitting sensation is different but can get addicting. The new paint job is growing on me and actually not too bad

Ok I will ask in a different way 'in your opinion' is it better than the other Yonex rackets? In particular how does it compare to the DR98?

Compare with DR98....
again, nothing like Regna because of frame action so only I can compare power, trajectory etc....
I tried numerous times for AI/DR line but somewhat reason I’ve never clicked with AI/DR line.
Someone said Regna can be combination of AI/DR and XI/SI/F/vcore series but somewhat agree and not agree.
I don’t know what is it but I felt too much power from AI/DR line. Regna 98 has slightly less power than AI/DR line but still gives a good power. Ball trajectory is very low for Regna 98 but slightly higher for Regna 100.
Probably similar trajectory with Regna 100 and DR 98.
Obviously both Regna is thinner than DR and I should not say hollow feeling for DR line but still some babolat like feeling for DR line but Regna has very solid feeling because of extra layers in the hoop.
Honestly Regna is not for everyone because of the frame action, someone might feel very stiff but once you understand the frame action, the stiff feeling might be gone.

It’s not bad looking pain job but looks like Yonex covered unique carbon technology (bare carbon pattern) with new paint and paint looks like matte finish which is same as Regna 100. Regna 100 PJ is much less durable than any other Yonex racket so far in my opinion.

Thanks, yeah I think DR can be a little powerful and not quite as much spin as I would like, this is the problem when you start using proper form you get too powerful lol

New paintjob looks like it's in the same style as the current Vcore Pro. Durability not as great as older semi-gloss and glossy paintjobs, but as long as you don't abuse the racquet the paint does hold up okay.

I actually really like this new paintjob! God I wish it wasn't so expensive!!
US racket prices are almost catching Japanese market prices.
Wilson’s special rackets are $300 so the price might be about right for this special premium racket hahaha.

Probably.
I don’t abuse rackets and my over 4 year old Regna 98 looks decent. Very few scratches and chips but Regna 100 has more chips due to paint materials.
Still prefer old paint job. It’s not bad for new one but want to see more exposure on new shaft carbon technology pattern since that’s the most unique Yonex carbon technology. It’s still there but barely exposed.
The other side of pic of racket.

Just got my Regna 98 2019. Not on court yet.
The paintjob is similar to previous version but better.
Solid and good balance. Static weight at 327g w/o OG.
The leather grip is better (softer) than previous black one in my opinion.
Grip size seems to be back to normal. My regna 2018 in grip 2 is held like grip 3.
Waiting for my Regna 100 2019.
Maybe my racquetholism is ended by these two Regnas unless a WHITE Regna would come out.

I almost got used one but did not want to spend 30000 yen.... maybe next time.
Regarding on the grip size, my one of Regna 100 was similar to normal one since earlier Regna grip was larger.
Actually surprised that Yonex changed grip size.
Have you played previous Regna 98 before?
Honestly I like current Regna 98. Occasionally use 100 too.
I don’t expect too much change in 100 but new 98 might be different than old one since new technology was applied.
Looking forward to hear from your review ^_^

Can't play with it because of raining for a few days here.
New Regna 98 seems to be some design changes.
Some differences at throat (near the handle). The bumper guard is longer. And the grommet at hoop bottom is following the old Regna 100 (more invisible).
The sweet spot is larger (just my feeling).

A less stiff 98 with 310 instead of 305 is something that really tickles my wallet

Really looking forward to this, actually like the paintjob too

I’ve never tried a Regna, would someone give me a brief experience with this racquet?

The store listed previous version for 66 RA but my regna’s stung RA was 65......
Surprised to see 64 RA.
Yonex often radically change next version of racket so I am not surprised but it might be very different.
Honestly I like old Regna 98 so Not sure I will like new version.

There’s an updated Regna dedicated site now and citing reinforced frame structure and slightly different drill pattern to enlarge sweet spot. Kinda curious how the new version feels but don’t want to get thrown off by the grip size

I’ve just came back from Japan and bought 2 Regnas 98 size 3. Not sure if I will play with them or sell. I tried several racquets with Head and Babolat and always went back to Wilson. So I am not sure about Yonex.

If this were such a terrific racquet, than Yonex would sell it outside Japan too. Furthermore dont believe in spring like actions from racquets. It has already been proven by high speed cameras captions over 30 years ago that racquet deformations actually costs energy, meaning these racquets keep on deforming long after the ball has left its stringbed. This may feel comfortable but in terms of power and spin it is less ideal.

I think no one said Regna is perfect racket which is not existed.
Regna is more like “concept” racket and Yonex is showing off their carbon technology which is very unique.
Yonex has a good carbon technology which is used for badminton rackets, tennis rackets, snow board (there is Regna snow board too with this technology) and road bike.
Regna was used one of their new carbon technology at shaft ( acting like spring like action). This technology makes Very unique rackets. I tried many rackets and nothing can compare with Regna because of this unique frame action.
Also very hard to describe until you hit with it. “Just different”.
Honestly, it can be “love” or “hate”. I did not like it when I tried the racket in the beginning and it took over 6 months to adjust and it’s my main racket for over 4 years ( once, I used to carry mostly 12 different rackets in my bag hahaha).
Also Yonex only can produce 200 rackets per a month because of complex carbon technology so they only release in Japan. It’s only 310g for 98 and 295g for 100 but SW is heavy so not many people might like Regna.
Regna has decent power and speed (heavy). Hard to describe in terms of heavy speed.
It’s more like roger clement throwing 90 mph fast ball vs Pedro Martinez throwing 90mph fast ball.
Both balls are same speed but clement has heavier ball.... not sure this can be correct comparison....
anyway, you don’t understand “spring” like action from shaft and it might be hard to believe. Also might be slightly exaggerated but that’s easier much description than any other way.

Did you get new one? Or previous versions?
Previous version is much cheaper especially used one nowadays.
Yonex often makes new rackets very different from previous version so not sure I will like new 98 since I am totally okay with previous 98 version.

I don’t know about the previous version. The one I bought is L3 and seems to be slightly thinner than a regular L3 (comparing to my Wilson Blade). Yonex leather grip is tacky, very nice.

Thanks for the info. The previous Regna, or Yonex from couple years back, all seem to have larger grip size. I had to get L2 for 1st gen Regna since that actually felt closer to L3 wilson/prince grip.
seems like Yonex has recalibrated their grip size in the past year?

Some people say “no” some people say “yes”.
I am more like “yes” person haha.
Seems like later version of Regna 100 has slightly smaller feeling.....
What does this thing play like, a less stiff Ezone?
As I said before.
Nothing like Regna. It’s very different because of frame action.
Regna is stiffer than Ezone. Not sure new version has same stiffness or not but probably same.
My old one is 68 unstrung and 65 strung. There were people who said 66 unstrung but not sure how the measurement came from.
Honestly Regna is not for everyone.
