He can't.

Remember all points are protected until March 2021.

Even if Thiem wins the tournament undefeated and Rafa loses later today he will still be #3.

Pretty normal that this could happen. Thiem is not intentionally losing the match but with the knowledge of already securing 1st place there is really no emergency in his play. This easily happens even unconsousially.

No. Champions don't do that. Everyone should learn from 2015 Nadal. Tsitsipas last year was also trying to win against Nadal when he didn't have to.

Two things :
1)He might be suspicious of something particular flaring up
2)Djokovic-Nadal(or Medvedev) back to back in semis and final. Requiring everything he has

I think it's a mixture of the two.

That was so foolish from Nadal to tire himself out vs Ferrer one day before the semi vs Djokovic.

But Thiem tanking this will not take him out of the tournament. He still reached the semifinal, even though it is undeserved.

Thiem was nice enough to let Rublev leave with 200 points and some pocket change for his troubles. This guy has a heart of gold.

This is WeakDrool. Thiem won the two matches that count. By beating both of the others that could advance he earned that luxury.

I can understand Thiem. He has a history of running out of gas in later stages of tournaments. He wants to stay fit for the semis and finals, which are on consecutive days.

it's not just the camera angle, in the O2 arena they have to zoom in on the court probly because they mount the main camera too far away.
THAT's the main reason the court perspectives are square instead of the regular rectangle. it's all squished because of the telephoto zoom,
and that's why we can't feel the real ball speed and not enjoying the game as we should.
i always hated that in London, and also a few weeks ago in Paris :mad::mad::mad:

Thiem's start to this tournament is near identical to last year's.

Won a crucial first match-up against a top 5 seed who are fellow one-handers (Fed and Tsists)

Played two of the best matches of his career against the top seed in his group in the second match (Djokovic and Nadal)

Lost his third match in straight sets against the lowest ranked player in his group after winning his first two matches (Matteo and Rublev) - Rublev is also the likely winner of the MIP award which is what Matteo won last year as well

Let's see if Dom can replicate his success of getting back to the finals but instead of being RU, actually winning it this time.

So for the 5th year in a row the defending champion has failed to defend the title. Each year since 2015 there has been a new champion.

It looks like tennis finally became weak enough for Nadal to have a chance!

Can Thiem beat him twice in a week? Or will Novak make Tim bend the knee again?
