Congrats to Novak for a well-earned win! Thiem fought hard but just couldn’t sustain the level required to hit through Djokovic consistently for five sets. No shame in that. Only one man has ever really been able to do that, and that beast has been chained and caged for a while now.

Then the seedings rule needs to change so that #3 is always be in the bottom half..
Rafa was seeded #1 at the Australian Open. Djoker was seeded #2. Fed was seeded #3.
#1 Rafa and #2 Djoker were in seperate halves and guaranteed not to meet until the Finals.
#2 Djoker and #3 Fed were guaranteed to meet in the SF because #3 should always be in the second half.
Likewise, if the seedings at French are #1 Djoker, #2 Rafa and #3 Thiem, #2 Rafa and #3 Thiem will meet in the SF.

#3 seed can be in top or bottom half. It is always random.

Murray US open 2012Just occurred to me that 5 of Djokovic's Slam finals have now gone the distance ie. to a 5th set but he has only lost 1 of them. Wonder if anybody can guess which was the only one he lost?

Djoker does not need any more motivation. He said last year that his goal is to be the all-time slam winner.
Djoker is on a mission. The crowd support means nothing and he may actually feed on any negativity.
Djoker is more likeable than strange Rafa that spends half the match scratching himself.

Happy that the match was not 1 sided and ended in 3 I thought thiem would take it in 4 cuz Djokovic was hopeless.
But out of nowhere he started to serve to better and clutch in the important moments i think this was Djokovic's toughest AO final imo though loss for Thiem but I still believe he will be a multi slam winner (like Djokovic said during his speech)

Djokovic missed just as much as Thiem this match (57 UEs each). And Djokovic hit almost 50 winners aswell. So your analysis of what you have seen is pretty clueless.
The right player was crowned the winner tonight. Djokovic was better in every crucial stat of the match. Djokovic had better winning % of his first serve, better % of 2nd serve points won, they approached the net almost the same amount of times and Djokovic was better here too, and Djokovic edged him on recieving points aswell.
So in every crucial stat Djokovic was ahead.

Well for his career Thiem is at 20% of return games on HC. That's serve bot territory. Med was around 28% last year which is good but not quite elite.
Return games won is often more about baseline ability anyway e.g. Nadal. I don't think either guy is elite versus first serve points.

Lovely and valiant effort by Thiem, but he has a problem. His return game has improved int he past 4 years or so, but only to the point where it is now average. It's not a strength. He's incapable of consistently pressuring his opponent's serve. This is a problem with many younger players these days. They can wallop the ball, but that's not enough. Thiem has consistently improved his hold game every year, but his return game has stagnated for a few years. He's probably as good at the return as he can ever become. It's too easy for his opponents to hold against him. That's why Djokovic was able to go out and grab a smoke for a set and a half, and then come back and win the last 2 sets.

You know why he didn’t say anything? Because he knows the fans always win. He will start losing and when he does guess who’ll be there to witness his decline? The crowd and they will revel in every second of it. No need to get even more hate. He’s well aware that the world outside of Serbia doesn’t and never did care for him. There was even a fan in the stands with a “Serbia vs The World.” T shirt on. His Serbian fans are even aware of it. Is it because they started World War II? Maybe for the older generation, but it’s mainly for his “try hard to love to me” personality and the way he carries himself on the court. Everywhere he plays, London, New York, Paris and Melbourne, etc. if it’s not for his little Serbian immigrant contingent they will always cheer for him to lose.

I definitely had an effect on Thiem in the 5th. Stats could be misleading - aside from Rafa's 5 set win, how many others went the distance? Really seems to be an issue if it's a long match.

For all the criticism about today's state of the field, a reminder that we have been treated to three memorable Slam finals in a row now. One between two all time greats, and then two between the greats and the rising stars. Plus a good match for the ATP Finals title between two younger players. It's safe to say the next generations are getting close, while we have these three phenomenons still entertaining us as well. Tennis is not so bad at all lately.
I have lost count how many times this guy has won after his opponent looked "in control" for good part of the match. And it takes a true champion's mind to not just come back but become dominant again after all the struggles that didn't happen long ago. Congratulations to Djokovic on another Slam and his return to the top of the rankings. Legendary player and a mental giant.

Its been a joke the whole time the lost generation was the main competition so that’s 10 years back that the decline started. And then the poly decline really started by 2004 with the big fours excellent baseline game sweeping aside the all court sheep. We’ve got a short window of excellence here where the big three, thiem and now maybe even Wawrinka take on the next GEN. Diamond Age heating up! Never been more crowded at the top.
