Most of the tennis world should concede now that Nole is mentally toughest player....

Wawrinka is 4-4 vs Djokovic at Slams, and 2-0 in finals.
Nadal is 4-4 vs Djokovic at Slam finals.

Is Wawrinka mentally tougher than Nadal?!

RG is not "indoors" go get some fresh air and your priorities straight. Nadal hasnt won the AO in 11 years and Djokovic has won 7 AOs since. Todays result is the very meaning of business as usual.
Except that Djokovic wasn't even that great today. He was extremely vulnerable, but somehow nobody can win 3 sets against him in one match. Players like Thiem can only push him to deciding sets, but never actually finish him. Djokovic totally owns the field now. He didn't just win AO, he won 5 of the last 7 slams. And he is not going to stop winning anytime soon.

bad reasoning on your part here, vast majority of the facts indicate that Nole is more mentally tougher than Nadal.

And Nadal is gonna fix that in 3 months like he always does :) seriously this stuff is by no means the end of the world :p Djokovic has played 5x better than this and gotten rekd without lube at the FO

As a Djoker fan I am hoping he can win the French. And tbh goes through Nadal with an open roof- for the race for clear goat. But I freely admit he has to be heathy and playing his best and the stars must align, so a big ask/dream.

This final was interesting because I like Thiem more but wanted djoker to win because of the goat. So like wanting too see Brady win more Super Bowl even though I dislike him. Or tiger or Jordan. As I write this not sure djoker is in same category. But he was 16grand slams closer than Thiem.

As for Thiem if the competition stays the way it is and the big three fade fast he may do better than I think. He gets closer every day and against the GOATS of their tourneys* (*waiting for grass).

Match would have been more enjoyable and the playing field more level if Thiem would have also had an extra day's rest like Djokovic did. I think if he were well-rested he may have one in three sets definitely four

Wawrinka peaks get a bit too much credit I have said this before. Djokovic does to have major difficulty with Stan at slams but I wouldn’t say he has no belief.
In tennis, matchups are everything. And then there's the belief.
It took Wawrinka a couple of real hard losses to novak and then he came swinging hard at him.
By matchup i mean he doesn't depend on his service to hold. He goes toe to toe with Djokovic in rallies and damage with his one hander.
By mentality, he doesn't hold punches. In 4th set of US Open 2016, he was all over novak when he was injured.
In contrast, Thiem was relaxing in 4th set. He half expected Novak to give him the match

Wawrinka's mindset changed completely almost as soon as he hired Magnus Norman in 2013. That's when Stan started pushing Novak to his limits in the Slams starting at AO2013.

In conclusion:
Thiem was slow to start, but once he found his flow, he became the dominating force on court. Novak, realizing this, frustrated with his inferiority, starts acting up and disrupting the game. Complaining to the umpire, to the audience, demanding medical attention to his nonexistent injuries, Novak tries to do what he can't do on court, to unbalance his opponent. And like many times before, he manages to kill the opponent’s momentum. Thiem's level drops and like magic, Novak is healthy and able to challenge him again.
It's impossible to know what went through Thiem's mind as the most important match of his career slips away from him. But, unlike Novak, Thiem admirably keeps his composure.
In the end, Novak wins the match. Thiem loses, but wins our respect - something Novak never will.

I appreciate the lack of bias in this post. Very well done, sir.

Very happy for Nole! Was very sick but supported Nole to pull it through. It was hard as this also meant a loss for Thiem but oh well. Perhaps he now understands how Murray and his fans felt when Andy was struggling to win his first slam.

Anyway, I digress - Congrats Nole on your 17th!

Time and again I go back to 2010 when Nole was so flat that posters were busy writing him off thinking he'd not amount to much and now, after a decade, he's won his 17th slam. How incredible.

Djokovic may have the worst personality in the history of tennis, but at least he wins some titles.
Whereas the other villains in tennis hardly ever win :)
And the Rafa-Federer rivalry is a lot more interesting with Djokovic interfering.

Simpler explanation. Nole was clearly better than Thiem In the first set. You can see that in the serving. Nole had one bad service game in the first set where he was broken, other than that he keeps Thiem at 15 in the other four service games. Thiem, on the other hand, has problems in every one of his service games, with break points in 3 of them and broken twice.

in the second and third sets Nole’s level progressively gets worse. He is visibly more sluggish and is broken 4 times in those two sets.

By the end of the third set Nole feels physically bad enough he decides to consult with an expert. Smart move. He is diagnosed with dehydration (always a risk for athletes at this level) and the remedy is simple. Drink more, including the replenishment drinks he (like all other pros) has for match play.

The result is quick. Nole feels much better and you can see it in his play (read the comments in this thread at that time). And so we go from sets 2 and 3, where Thiem had 8 BP opportunities and broke 4 times to sets 4 and 5, where Thiem had only 3 BP opportunities and never managed to break Nole again.

Thiem's inability to break Djokovic in the last couple of sets was all about finals nerves, nothing to do with Djokovic.
I lost count of the number of times Thiem missed a routine shot on big points :)
Thiem-Djokovic was nowhere near as impressive as Thiem-Nadal, polar opposites in quality.
Bizarre that Djokovic could be this hopeless in a slam final, despite playing 6 hours less than Thiem....
I can see why Djokovic is no longer a factor at Roland Garros - the true test of tennis.

@luciahoff

Novak Djokovic' coach, Marian Vadja w CNN: "In the past, it's kind of more difficult with him to work because he's sometimes unpredictable and emotional a little bit. But now I think he is more stable and knows what he wants and you can see in his game, he is quite confident."

quite an article here...

The tone of the article is really sad. I mostly attributed the crowd being pro-Thiem because of the story it would be to take out both Nadal and Djokovic, on top of the fact that Thiem's just so damn likable. Unfortunate for Djokovic, but I still think Australia is quite pro-Djokovic - a decent reprieve from what goes on at the other slams against him.

I think from most pro-Djokovic to least it's AO, RG, Wim, USO.

Thiem was vey passive in the beginning of the match, and it seems to be a pattern since he often loses the first set (Zverev in semis, Schwartzman in Vienna, Tsitsipas in Beijing...) He needs to fire up and keep his drive.

But that Djokovic, a professional athlete since 2003, forgot to hydrate in GS final?
You have to try harder than that.

It's strange that whenever I read an article or an interview of Djokovic, he comes across as a really nice, thoughtful guy.
But on court he appears to be the opposite. When Rafa, Roger or Andy show modesty and humility, Novak is arrogant and self-centered. If only he could just bow his head when booed at, instead of shouting back.

Maybe it is the fight to survive mentality he talks about in the article.

Murray is about as far from modest as one can get. He routinely celebrates opponents' UEs, cusses like a sailor, berates everyone around him, and yells "come on" before points are even finished. Do you even watch tennis are you just talking out of your aß?

Djokovic took the first set, Thiem upped his game to win sets 2 and 3, Djokovic upped his game and won sets 4 and 5, Thiem tanked out, Djokovic had more in reserve, How is this different ? Thiem now has 7,045 ATP points and is in 4th place, Djokovic 9,720 ATP Points 1st Place. 2nd at a slam is quite an achievement. The slams have become a two horse race Nadal and Djokovic with Federer still playing almost to the top of the field on Grass. Next up the Sunshine Double......

Novak has never come back to win a slam being 2 sets to 1 down.
Novak never won a major trailing 1-2 in sets
There is first time for everything ;)

The AO 2020 final became the 15th Grand Slam final in the Open era, in which the winner was losing 1-2 or 0-2 on sets. Turnover from 1-2 to sets was 11-time in the Grand Slam finals (Open era) and from 0-2 to sets was 4-time. Djoker became the second AO champion in the Open Era after Mats Wilander, who was managed to turn the final from deficit 1-2 to sets (Wilander managed the same turnover in 1988 final).
