Doesn’t Zverev have a terrible 5th set record??
No, he has a very good 5th set record. His problem is that he has to PLAY so many 5th sets early in Slams, not that he loses them. He normally loses in 3 or 4 after having too many long fights before.

On topic: I think Wawrinka in 3 or 4. He can easily deal with Zverev’s groundstrokes even if they come as aggressive as in recent matches. An important question will be the quality of Stan’s return, but I think Zverev will crumble under pressure and start to have serve issues again.

Stan isn't a real threat to djok with this declined movement

Stan gave Djokovic a beating at the US Open 6 months ago. I don’t want to hear anything about Djokovic being hurt either. Djokovic has always been terrified of Stan because Stan can bully him from both wings and Djokovic has no variety.

Cant say a lot but going with A.Z assuming Stanimal is not yet there physical wise fully. But we never know.

It's AO.
And djok is 2-1 against stan here.
That time stan had a much better movement than what he has now

Since 2013(when Stan reached next level) he is 4-2 agaisnt Djokovic in Slams and both his losses are in 5 sets. That is the record that matter here not 6-19. You probably said the same things before their USO match

In terms of de-Nadalization who should I get behind? I'm inclined to think a zoning Zverev would have the best chances in the semi, if he wins in 3 or 4. If Z is hitting the back hand deep cc and dtl current Nadal will have difficulties (Kyrgios was playing quite short and loopy in most of their rallies and not going dtl with pace like Zverev can when he's on). Having said that, I doubt Zverev or Stan would have more than a 25% chance in the semis if Nadal gets through Thiem easily.

I’ll go with Zverev in 4 here for his first grand slam semifinal berth. He should be fresher and seems to be in tighter form, skating through in straights against some dangerous and/or in-form opponents. Wawrinka went into beast mode at times against Medvedev, but also was an unforced error machine at other times. Think Zverev will remain steadier and get the win, though a Stan victory wouldn’t be a huge surprise either.

Yeah, Zed with the two-hander is probably more dangerous. Despite the head-to-head, I think Zverev’s the tougher match-up of the two for Nadal. They’ve only played three times on hard. Nadal leads 2-1, but in one of those victories he had to save match point and the other went to five – and they were both a few years ago too. Zverev’s a better player now. In their most recent match he mangled Nadal in straights.

Wawrinka’s one-hander just gets neutralized by Nadal’s spin. He still has a shot, especially if Nadal’s dropping the ball short, but I think Sascha is probably the more dangerous opponent.

I know Stan has played more sets but what is the court time comparison? Given Stan had one match cut short I figured it might be closer.

From the main tourney thread:

Speaking of freshness, some stats coming into the QFs.

Time on Court
09:48 Nadal (3 three set matches, 1 four set match, most recent match 3:38/four set)
10:23 Thiem (2 three set matches, 1 four set match, 1 five set match, most recent match 1:50/three set)

11:04 Wawrinka (1 two set match/retirement, 1 four set match, 2 five set matches, most recent 3:25/five set)
08:15 Zverev (4 three set matches, most recent 1:37/three set)

10:42 Sandgren (2 three set matches, 1 four set match, 1 five set match, 1 back to back day 2 & 3, most recent 3:27/four set)
09:07 Federer (2 three set matches, 1 four set match, 1 five set match, most recent 2:11/four set)

07:53 Raonic (4 three set matches, 1 back to back day 2 & 3, most recent 2:19/three set)
07:22 Djokovic (3 three set matches, 1 four set match, most recent 2:06/three set)
So about a three hour difference. The largest of any of the quarterfinals.

Interesting match. Zverev leads the H2H 2-0 but they've never met in a slam which is where Stan plays his best tennis. Stan's my guy and I'd love to see a Wawrinka/Djokovic final so I'm picking Stan in 4 sets here.

I thought TTW wanted young blood? All these years of screaming. Thiem vs Zverev would be what is wanted? Young players breaking through? Raonic vs thiem/zverev?

Raonic is not that young anymore ...

Of course I'll always root for Fed in any match he plays, but in truth I'd be quite happy to finally see a nextgen slam winner.

Clownrinka will prevail with his backhand and snazzy haircut in four and then thank @Powderwombat for inspiring him to the upset of mdvdv and another NextGenner back to back.

Allons-y, SLAMINAL!
