Djokovic played the first set like a challenger mug and Fed had the set on his racquet but still blew it. Unbelievable!

The second and the third sets were good from Djoko but not great and Fed seemed not 100%. I think one of Zverev/Thiem wins his maiden Slam title on Sunday.

Well, not a surprising result - everything was really stacked against Fed; still he was very close to getting that first set. Well played, well tried, all we can ask for.

In a way I do not mind so much that Fed lost - I really would like Zverev or Thiem to get a slam, but I will never cheer against Roger. So now in the final I can cheer for a NextGen winner! Though Novak will be a big obstacle to overcome for them.
I don’t give them much of a chance but who do you see as a better opponent? Thiem has beaten novak but that was on clay.

Fat chance. This court was build for novak.

I'm no djoker fan, but two things:
a. He's likely including all slams, which is fair
b. From a PR perspective, that speech was perfectly engineered to try and win over some Fed fans before the final. He's almost never that nice to Fed, but he was... and I think he's more than smart enough to be playing the game (and Kudos to him for doing it).
He has been nicer to Fed, than Fed has EVER been to him.

Novak has this.

In the first set, he lured his opponent into his tiebreaking web.

In the second set, he broke for the set, in a game when Fed made 7/8 first serves.

In the third set, he broke from 40-15, paying tribute to their previous Slam meeting.

The birthday present is definitely not too bad. Now, for the usual belated gift, I would like a win in the final. Again, no pressure Novak.

highly unlikely. his golden chance was last year and he played out of this world. still lost. i think he can not repeat that, but i sure wish he would win another Wimbledon and then retire.
Roger would crush novak if he plays like that. that was just dumb mental error that caused the loss. I was worried he may not be able to produce that tennis again but in this aussie open, he proved that he still can. so he can win Wimbledon again. It is pretty obvious.

Those aren't slam finals!! If you think they'll beat Novak, great. Their chances would be slim.
You said they wouldn't have the mental strength to beat him in a final - I just wanted to point out that they had done it before. I don't think it would come down to mental issues in the final, at least for Thiem who has been in two GS finals before. With Zverev it is uncharted territory, so you never know, but again he actually has a pretty good record at holding his nerves in big situations.

Of course, they also need to bring the game to beat Novak, no matter their mental strength. IMO, Djokovic is the clear favourite, and the conditions are pretty much perfect for him. But it's not a foregone conclusion, and I don't think it will be as one-sided as last year's final; would be a little surprised if it's over in straight sets. But we'll see!

Djokovic' level should get lower, he should decline a bit before Federer can do Anything against him in Slams. He solved Nadal but Nadal' decline played part there. No such case here. Year after year passed and you still find Djoko is basically Same player. He is the one who has declined least among three.

Relieved. I would have been really unhappy if Federer had won mostly because he has not played well this tournament. I want Thiem or Zverev to win but I know how tough that will be. Just glad to wake up and see that I was right and Djokovic won in 3 fairly easy sets (I guess the first set was close).

this wasn't a winnable match anyway for Federer.

he couldn't get down low on many running forehands and was arming that shot.

Djokovic is obv much better than fed today, but the more interesting question is --> who is better djok at 33 or fed at 33

we will know the answer to that soon.

there is an argument to be made though that novak is better on big pts over their careers.

of course if novak cant convert against in the finals...then its kinda silly. a win over fed at 38 is not much consolation for djok's legacy.

This next generation has failed time and time again when it counts especially in finals against the likes of the champions. My money’s on novak.

I don't really know tbh. Thiem has been in a GS final, and beat Djokovic in a great match at the WTF, also took out Zverev of course in the semis. Zverev beat Djokovic in two finals. The h2h records are identical propertions (3-2 v Zverev versus 6-4 v Thiem), although Dominic's win all came on clay until the WTF.

So I guess - whoever is in better form, and therefore maybe whoever wins the semi?

All for the best. Nadal vs Novak match would have been boring beat down. now it is possibly Thiem vs Novak. that could be really exciting good match close 5 setter with Dominator winning his first major

Slow start from Djokovic & Federer battery was at 0% after 5-3 but the outcome was never in doubt Federer can now rest and recover from his injury

Major props to Roger for playing and fighting as well as he did given his physical state. As a Novak fan, obviously I'm happy he won, but respect to ol Rog' for putting up the showing he did. He pushed Novak hard in that first set and he had him on the ropes for sure. Hope whatever niggling injury for Roger goes away quickly. I want all the players to be healthy and play their best as often as possible.

Good luck in the final, Novak. You'll need it if you don't raise your level from today. That first set was a mess before the TB.

At least they keep coming, and they also keep improving. It will happen eventually. Remember how many GS finals Murray lost against the Big 3, until he finally made the breakthrough?

I'm never going to count Novak out, he is a great champion and he is obviously the favourite here. But Zverev beat him in the ATP WTF final 2018, which is a big occasion. He is not the youngest anymore, he can have his off days too. Whoever plays him in the final will have their chances - unless Djokovic is having one of THOSE days.

Two to three generations post Nadal & Djokovic have been the absolute worst in the history of tennis. So yes, he may keep on winning until someone from the next gen steps up and starts taking on these two and then all bets are off.
Guessing you haven't watched much tennis.

Let's say it another way: there has never, ever been a time when 3 ageing players (legends) have been concurrently playing and anywhere near as dominant, which completely changes perspectives on new generations.

Let's add up Emerson (12), Laver (11), Borg (11), Tilden (10), Perry (8), Rosewall (8)... and with positions 4 through 9 on the all-time list, we finally get more slams than the current Big 3 - who aren't finished.

Put it another way, add up some more "common other legends - let's leave out some lesser-talked about": Laver, Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Connors, Lendl... there's 6 unquestionable legends of the sport, who have 56 slams against the 55 of the current Big 3 - who are still playing and adding to the total.

So, so wrong to be saying that the players following them are rubbish just because the players leading are of a concurrent quality of which we've never seen.

Could it also be imo that he is most suited for the conditions we currently have? Also a shame fed couldnt meet novak in 2017

I’m amazed by the critical comments against Fed in this thread. The guy is 38, is injured and probably pumped full of meds to numb the pain and was probably on the physio’s table for hours leading up into the match. He did all we could hope for - which is give his all and he came close to having a shot to win set 1 which as we all know could have changed the tone of the match. Not saying winning set 1 would have won the entire match but he could have been competitive. But not surprisingly after set 1 he faded Bc of his hurt body and Bc Djokovic is A great player and number 1 and at 32 much much fresher. Anyway kudos to fed for showing up knowing he was likely going to lose but giving the fans something to enjoy. Kudos to Djokovic for making it to another final. And good luck to Thiem and Zverev, one of them will have a chance to challenge for the title!

I wonder if Federer will ever again win a GS match against Djokovic?

Wimbledon 2019 was maybe his last chance?

He needs to retire although he still pretty much makes runs at GSs so he still making money. Cashing in more.

I don't trust Thiem in a big final against an opponent who isn't 37-38.

Novak is still not 38. Fed was just as good as Djokodal at their age but had actual competition.
That won’t matter. If the next generation doesn’t step up this guy might win 22 slams. Novak with a couple of more Wimbledons and Us opens and he will surpass Federer.

I don’t know. It wasn’t winnable on normal terms like fitness etc. But Djokovic admitted how nervous he was when he was down 1-4, and it was also visible. If he had lost the 1st set, there is a possibility that it would have continued the same way. That’s why I’m a bit frustrated now.
