And the youngster from Poland completes the upset knocking out Vekic 7-5 6-3.

Into the 4R where she’ll play Kontaveit for a spot in the QF.

Not sure what that means. Coco got smashed by Osaka last time they met and just beat her. And Coco aint even ranked in the top 50
What that means is that Coco is already playing at a top 50 level but her ranking hasn't caught up to her talent yet.

Well finally a top 10 player gets through unscathed.

Simona Halep takes out Putintseva in straight sets. Into the 4R against Mertens/Bellis.

Watch Wang's press con on YouTube. She struggles somewhat with English, but she's very nice, down to earth, modest.

Huh does that mean Kontavet is the same? How about the Russian who just beat Pliskova? How about wang? I mean we make excuses for all the other high seeds except for Serena. I find that ridiculous. Any time any of these other seeds get blasted by someone its like oh that girl is hot to bad for the high seed. But when Serena loses well she should retire. Meantime she is 8 in the world playing part time. Which is hilarious. Osaka who everyone said is the next big thing just lost to a 15 year old who wasn't even on tour till last year. But he that 15 year is great bla bla. Course Serena loses to an established player who played awesome and its oh Serena stinks.

You just said that Bencic stinks and Bencic beat Serena so you're not making a good case for Serena. Anyway, Serena doesn't stink except compared to her achievements compared to expectations, and those expectations are to win majors, which she hasn't done in years. The obvious reason that Serena should at least consider retirement is that she is 38. Most tennis players retire long before age 38. That provides context that you're ignoring for all these other 20 somethings or younger players. Given their much younger age, obviously it makes no sense for them to consider retirement. I do agree that there hasn't been any great consistency on the WTA tour for a long, long time and there has been no all-time greats to emerge in over a decade. Osaka's mental game is such that I'm dubious that she's the one. Gauff might be though. My money is on Andreescu as the next all-time great, but she suffers a lot of injuries that could end up majorly hampering her career.

No one really had any expectations on those other players though, there is no narrative. Even though there are other multiple slam winners in the draw, none are consistent enough at making deep slam runs for it to be a massive story if they go out...

It makes no sense for a lady who has made 4 major finals in the last 2 years to retire. Just as it makes no sense for a lady who is 24 and has made no major finals to retire. It doesn't make sense for either of them to retire.

What I am sort of getting from people is because Serena was so good and now she is not as good that she should retire. Now that is honestly up to Serena. But she still is pretty good. Maybe she can't win another major. I don't know. But that really isn't a reason to retire if she really wants to keep trying. She just won a tournament for gods sake. No one says Fed should retire and he hasn't won a major in awhile. Heck no one say boy Ivo should retire and he never wins majors. I don't understand why people can't just let these players play.

Gonna try and stay away for Mugu. Played a match at 9 and that went the distance despite me playing like a dumpster fire. Only have a few hours to go now.

The new yet very successful doubles pairing of Gauff/McNally march through to the 3R with a straight sets win over 8th seeds Schuurs/Peschke.

Despite being 15 and 18, the pair won the Washington title in August, made the US Open 3R and won the Luxembourg title in October.

McNally won the junior French Open doubles title in 2018 with..... Swiatek. She also won the 2018 junior US Open doubles title with Gauff. Barely 2 years later and we’ve got Gauff, McNally and Swiatek all making huge moves in singles and doubles on the “adults” tour.

Cici vs Merten match is to hard watch. ESPN commentators have mention her 4 surgeries around 50 times! Ugh!

Mertens finding another level now, up a double break.

Really good to see Bellis back and winning though. Used her protected ranking to get in and is currently ranked #600. In the live ranking though she’s skyrocketed up to #298.

Mertens hands Bellis the 3rd set bagel.

The 2018 SFist is back into the 4R. Quietly under the radar as usual.

She’ll play Halep for a spot in the QF. Watch out for her.

I agree, Osaka doesn't seem to be focused. She kinda resembles a teenager preoccupied with some boy, or something she read on Twitter, etc.
...or she is like many players in history who did not go on a tear of winning every major they enter. She already has a place in history as a once new player winning back to back majors and she's still young.

I'm glad Kerber won her match. She is so much an example of not fully realizing her talent. I want her to win more majors soon.

Couldn't get much easier for her.
It's just that she's losing to Yang now.
No, you were the one posting your conspiracy theory BS, which is just your usual hate of Serena at work. The WTA has many formidable players who can win against anyone, but you're pulling the same crap like two TTW members (with three letters as their name) who look for any reason to attack Serena. Everyone knows the reason why.

Yep because people don’t know women’s tennis and go oh yeah the woman who’s won 23 slams will win it. It was the same crap in the last 2 slam finals everyone said oh Serena will win and me and a few others here went no, Halep and Andreescu are the favourites. They called the losses ‘upsets’ but they weren’t. She won a flimsy title in Auckland and everyone went oh she’s a champion again. Compare that to how Barty, Osaka and Petra did coming into the tournament and it pales in comparison.
You're still not getting it; commentators are basing their predictions on the fact that she has won 23 majors--7 of them at the Australian Open. They cannot ignore that, even after she failed to win her majors finals in recent history. As for Kvitova? Who cares? From 2008 to 2019, she only made one quarterfinal, one semifinal, and one final. Usually, she crashes and burns in 1st and 2nd round matches at the Australian Open, so no matter how she came into the event (which was not that impressive), no one in their right mind expects anything from her here based on her history at the event.

Barty? She finally made last year's QFs after back-to-back 3rd round finishes. Not exactly setting the AO world on fire no matter how she's coming into it. The French Open is where eyes should be on her, as its obviously her best event up to this time.
