You're still not getting it; commentators are basing their predictions on the fact that she has won 23 majors--7 of them at the Australian Open. They cannot ignore that, even after she failed to win her majors finals in recent history. As for Kvitova? Who cares? From 2008 to 2019, she only made one quarterfinal, one semifinal, and one final. Usually, she crashes and burns in 1st and 2nd round matches at the Australian Open, so no matter how she came into the event (which was not that impressive), no one in their right mind expects anything from her here based on her history at the event.

Barty? She finally made last year's QFs after back-to-back 3rd round finishes. Not exactly setting the AO world on fire no matter how she's coming into it. The French Open is where eyes should be on her, as its obviously her best event up to this time.
It’s funny you say Petra’s Aus Open is ‘only’ one quarterfinal, one semifinal and one final.... that final was LAST YEAR. Probably good to not discount her. Kvitová has made an Aus Open final far more recently than Serena has. How many times doesn’t Serena have to bomb out before you realise its best not to tip her to win? Use common sense for goodness sake.

YOU were talking about the predictions based on players' performances coming into the AO, and again, Kvitova has a poor record there--Serena won it SEVEN times. Between the two, why would anyone use Kvitová's pre-AO performance as the basis for predicting anything above Williams in reference to the AO when she has a less than stellar record there? If she had won even a single AO title sometime over the past 12 years, someone might be able to use that experience as a way of predicting her path, but that's not the case at all. Don't let some support of Kvitová blind you to the reality of her record at the event before she actually wins a title there.

Oh, and about your "How many times doesn’t Serena have to bomb" crack. Funny, with every major, I see certain members pick the same women to win over and over and over again--many who never won at the event they entered, yet this is not questioned as being a bad/wrong choice. The same on the men's side with Federer; there's the daily 70+ threads about his every move at every major, most rubbing the crystal balls and sprinkling fairy dust in predicting a way for Federer to win, yet that's not a case of it not being so good to pick him to win.

Yeah....

Yeah....
Another silly post where someone tries to put everyone in the same box. I’m a Fed fan but I don’t go predicting him to win the AO. Just like how I’m also a Serena fan (and a Barty fan) but didn’t predict either of them to win the title. It’s common sense. You criticise Kvitova’s performances at the AO but she did better than Serena last year and that’s a fact. You’re talkimg about a players record at an event. So when the US Open comes this year you’ll tip former champion Sam Stosur and Venus Williams over Halep and Pliskova? I mean Sam and Venus have won a US Open title while Halep and Pliskovs haven’t?

It’s not black and white Thunder, stop acting like it is. Kvitová may not be a former AO champ but she had and has a better shot than Serena.

Evert was asked to pick an upset tonight. She picked Svitolina over Muguruza which was definitely wrong in 1 way and looks to be wrong in 2.

Kinda funny that a 2x slam champion (Muguruza) beating a player who’s never even made a slam final (Svitolina) is ‘an upset’ but thats the beauty of women’s tennis.

Cheering for Muguruza now.

It’s so easy to forget what was so good about Muguruza’s game since it’s so long since we’ve see her at her best but we’re seeing it today. There’s a reason she’s a former #1 and dual slam champion:

So tell me. Good decision from Pliskova let Conchita go? I saw pliskova fans being happy about the decision.

That’s the thing with coaching, it works well with some people but doesn’t work with others and you never know the formula in advance.

I think Conchita just knows Muguruza’s game (thanks to the nationality background) but who knows. I do think Pliskova should’ve kept Stubbs for the Aus Open instead of Dani Vallerdu.

Garbiñe Muguruza gets it done in style!

She defeats #5 Svitolina 6-1 6-2 to make the 4R.

She’ll play the winner of Bertens/Diyas for a spot in her first Aus Open QF.

Despite all the crazy upsets of today, we are in for some juicy matches

Muguruza v Bertens possible 4R.
Kerber v Pavs 4R.
Muguruza or Bertens v Kerber or Pavs in an epic QF.

Words can’t describe how excited I would be for a Muguruza v Kerber QF.

Two multi slam champs who didn’t have a great 2019 but are doing well this tournament.

Mug and Halep can fight it out on the bottom half. I like them both.

Rooting for Key, Kvitova, and Wang on the top half.

****ing hell. Muguruza in brutal form, best I’ve seen her in quite some time. Watch out for Garbie for the title.
The problem with Mugu is consistency. Her next match could be completely different with lots of UEs and so on. Same with Kontaveit.

Of course. but when when she was with Sumyuk she wouldn’t have been able to beat Svitolina so I have hope her game and backup strategy has improved with Conchita.

Svitolina is clearly (and unfortunately) declining. But we'll see. Actually it's quite entertaining that this year's AO is so unpredictable.

Not a word of Bertens-Diyas here? Well, this hasn't been exactly huge spectacle! At times this is like looking at club players hitting nicely back and forth. Diyas made lots of errors in basic balls that she wasn't even going for in the first set and lost it 2-6, but has now taken 4-2 lead in the second as Kiki is like a sleepwalker that once in while wakes up for good clean winner. Wake up Kiki and finish this! I want to make my 4th round pick soon! ;):D

I fell asleep. Was feeling too tired :(

Nice surprise to wake up to though. From the highlights it looks like the bh dtl in the zone, and she was really solid with her net play.

Camilla's presser is just wow! She comes in full make up, beautifully dressed and the way she talks in Italian is quite sexy.

One career-high result for Kvitová does not make her a better contender for the AO title going in than Serena, who won the title seven times. To make that argument is embracing the opposite of prediction based on relevant data all to life Kvitova, and that's a ridiculous position to take at this point.

You’re talkimg about a players record at an event. So when the US Open comes this year you’ll tip former champion Sam Stosur and Venus Williams over Halep and Pliskova? I mean Sam and Venus have won a US Open title while Halep and Pliskovs haven’t?
Shifting the goalposts, I see. The Kvitová vs. Serena argument is based on you thinking the former should be favored as a contender going into this AO over a seven time champion. On one side, you have one woman who has never displayed any great ability at the AO versus the other, who is one of the most successful AO champions in history, second only to Margaret Court. That kind of dominance cannot be ignored going into the event. This is not some player who has not been a factor (to win the title) in recent years and is living off of her name. Her last AO title was 2017. That is recent history. The lengths you will go to defend Kvitová at this stage of her history at the event are just plain silly.
