2020 Prostaff update

one more review if you guys care...

Hmm, from this review, it’s all precision and control, with a decrease in power, especially on serve. I wonder if the tighter string pattern pattern was Wilson’s compromise for an 18x20 “We’ll just tighten up the string bed. Stupid customers won’t know the difference.” Lol

I imagine string type and tension has a lot to do with it.
Yeah must be. Polys are very popular on these boards so with the higher launch angle of them, the 18x20 doesnt seem to matter. Whereas I use a multi poly hybrid with the multi in the mains and so it’s already low. I did try a demo of the 16x19 blade with it having the fully poly bed and I must admit I did find it very erratic

Just got the Insiders mail from Wilson to pre-order the the Prostaff v13 but it seems that grip size 4 is unavailable, and when filling out the notification screen to be alerted when its available, a pop up appears that notifications are not available Looks like I’ll also miss out on the retro case for the first 70 pre-orders. Not too bothered about the case, as I have this case for my PS85 Original but it would have been nice since it would have been free. I’ll keep checking the UK site to see if it becomes available. £250 is a bit steep though, and that’s not even strung
Phoned Wilson UK today to follow-up my e-mail to them where I complained that grip size 4 wasn't available to order for the PS97 v13 when using the Insider email link. I checked before I made the call that it was still the case and it was. Their response was that I'll have to wait until the 28/09 and will miss out on the free case . So, I tried again 10 minutes after I put the phone down and it was mysteriously available o_O. So I placed my order in a hurry and upon checking my basket and I had two items in there. The other item was the free retro-case so I guess if you're one of the first 70 orders, you will get the case automatically added to your basket. Any recommendations on string and what tension I should go for? Will report back upon arrival of the racket with some pictures. Hope some of you have had success in ordering.

Initial impression of the PS97 v13...

Very solid and stable for the 315 gram weight. I don’t know what a 6.4 si stiffness rating means and I don’t have an RDC machine but I would guess 66-67 for the RA. The string pattern is a tight 16x19 so it may play more like an 18x20 with a lower launch angle. Very accurate, point and shoot playability. Fast through the air, but not a spin monster by any means, so you will have to create your own. Extremely solid at net. Great feel since the Countervail is gone.

Is it only the white sided pro staff 97 that had the CV? Or did the all black one that came after it and before this have it too? The tighter string pattern of this PS97 I don’t think I’m gonna like so I may have to try the older one

The all black PS 97 also had a CV version. I believe there are all black and tuxedo models for CV.

How did you find the power...adequate/reasonable?

I would say reasonable. But in my experience, a player’s perception of a racquet’s power is relative to the racquet they currently play with. With that said, this is not a Pure Drive, but it’s also not Prestige either. I think it feels similar to the Project One Seven.

Thanks! If it's similar to the Project One 7, then I would say it has fairly decent power. Wilson clearly wanted the PS97 to get back to being a more control oriented racquet!

This review just sold me. I'm all in! I wonder how much this racket will be sold for at TW?

So so tempted to get the new PS97

Lol! This guy is all pumped up about the Pro Staff 97.
I love the talk about “ball pocketing”, especially given that the first coach they show and the host, don’t hit the ball hard enough to even GET ball pocketing.

Wilson QC on the rebound?

Ordered from Wilson Monday evening, just got here now.

Hesitant to have ordered, usually use TW Matching to get on-spec sticks. Last RF97 tuxedo on fire sale had to be returned as it was 9 HL without placard but with plastic on handle!

Plan was to keep plastic on handle, gently remove placard, weigh & balance; if grossly out of spec, replace placard and return.

With plastic on handle, 316g/10 HL...looking good...knowing the plastic is 2-3g, removed it:

314g/10 HL. Perfect. Same as my v11.

By the way, W lists the PS97 as 314g unstrung on the website, but 315 on the racquet...did for the v11 too.

Post stringing, will check swingweight too...hope it matches my v11 (319 SW with 17/17L strings...14g worth).

Can’t really conclude anything from just one racquet, but maybe W is tightening the QC screws? Heard the Clash line is pretty close to specs.

wilson's QC has been wildly overblown imo. mostly driven by people who order 1-2 rackets and receive mismatching specs, which happens with all brands except probably Yonex. last time i ordered 12 identical Wilson rackets, 9 were very close to factory specs including SW, 2 came on specs with weight/balance and lower SW, and only 1 had higher SW than the rest of hte batch

If you don't mind me asking. What in the hell did you order 12 matching rackets for?

i found a racket that was no longer available in the states and bought out the remaining inventory. Figured i'd be lucky if i found 4 that matched and could sell off the rest. Only ended up selling 3.

Agree. Mostly driven by the Yonex fanboys on this forum.

It's not. My nCode Six.One 18x20's I bought in 2005 were nowhere close to matching. I bought BLX Six.One 18x20's in 2010, so far apart that they literally could not be matched. Same weight but half a cm difference balance point. Swing weights were 324 and 333. I bought 3 6.1 25A's, expecting to be only able to match 2 of them, but they all came in fairly close.

Are you talking about matching mass exactly too? Most of us mortals won’t notice a difference in the frames, especially after 10 minutes of hitting with a different one, if the balance and swingweight are matched or very close (1mm and 2-3sw points off max). I’ve seen racquets customized by the various pro rooms, done by myself, and done by other (better, more professional) customizers with matching balance and sw on the same frame that were 5g off and felt the same when hitting.

I suppose if you got 2 sticks with masses and balances at opposite ends of the QC range, they might be “unmatchable.” But, I find it hard to believe a good customizer would be unable to get 2 frames to swing and play effectively the same. That’s assuming we just want 2 of the same spec, not a specific spec like a mid-30cm balance on a blade while keeping the mass under 315g unstrung, for example.

Strung with overgrips, one was 351.2g/31.5cm/333, the other was 352.8g/31cm/324. The racket tech who said it is one of the best, and if I type his name or the name of his shop in the TT message boards, it automatically gets turned into "****". In theory you could add enough weight to the head of one, and the handle of the other to get them to match weight and balance, but SW is a whole other issue, and you're probably going to alter the flex of the one that gets weight at the top.

I am assuming that you've strung the V13 Pro Staff 97, and if so, are the ties off's and string pattern the exactly the same as the previous version? For a 2 piece string job. From the video above,
it looks like the mains tie off at throat 6, and the cross tie-off at head 5 starting and at throat 8 ending, which is different than my current PS 97. Thanks in advance.

I have a hollow feeling...

Popped the hood, no foam in the shaft. Flashlighted...yep, hollow!

The hairpin under the grip is now a flattened octagonal vs the rectangular v11.

Also, the yellow kevlar is clearly visible in the 45 braid weave in the hairpin.

Good to know kevlar‘s still there...though probably won’t be in the lighter 97L and other versions.

Between no foam, layup, and string spacing/grommet changes, this is an all new pro staff; at least extensively modified.

Can’t wait to string it and see how the feel has changed.

No foam?

I'm not sure if that's going to be a good feeling frame or not. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

~3g lead under the bumper of the 324 sw stick brings it to 333-334, 355.8g, and ~31.3cm balance. 2g of weight in the trap door of the other brings the balance down to 31.3cm and mass to 353.2g.

If you can feel that 2.6g difference with the other specs matched, you’re much more sensitive than me. I’d consider those matched after those small modifications, as would most of my colleagues. Though, I’m sure a small percentage of folks would notice the difference.

And you know that the flex often changes a point or two when you flip the racquet over on the RDC, right? You can even manipulate how tightly the racquet is supported on the machine and get slightly higher or lower flex ratings. The layup doesn’t change, and a significant amount of weight would have to be added to change how the racquet deforms and reacts to ball impact. Doesn’t mean “feel” won’t be affected, but it wouldn’t be that significant. And a difference of 9sw points, 5mm of balance is definitely noticeable. But they can be matched to play almost imperceptibly the same for most players IMO. Just depends how finicky the customer is...some are more and some are less.

Honestly, the foamless Textreme2 Princes with Twaron feel just as good, and similar, to my foamy Wilsons.

Think the aramid is a much bigger contributor to the feel than foam.
