2020 Ranking Predictions

With the 2020 season nearly upon us, here's my year end ranking predictions for next year.

1. Dominic Thiem
2. Stefanos Tsitsipas
3. Daniil Medvedev
4. Rafael Nadal
5. Novak Djokovic
6. Alexander Zverev
7. Denis Shapovalov
8. Alex De Minaur
9. Matteo Berrettini
10. between Federer, Dimitrov, Rublev, or Chung

What are your 2020 predictions? Who will rise up the ranks? Who will fall from grace? Who will stand atop the heap?

People always predict these and most are nearly always wrong. But you can usually see why they've put whoever down as number 1 and it makes sense.

Yours however, come on man. No way nadal and Djokovic are finishing outside of the top 3. And Federer 10th.

If this isn't trolling, well tbh I hope it is otherwise I'd be worried...

It's not trolling. I'm making bold predictions, but I really do think 2020 is the year for NextGenners to finish off the big 3. They're breathing down Fedalovic's necks already, and the Big 3 will be 39, 34, and 33 next year.

Uh, hard one. I remember completely mispredicting 2019 Top 10 except for Nadal being #1 and maybe Djokovic being #2. But let’s try.

1.Nadal
2.Djokovic
3.Thiem
4.Zverev
5.Federer
6.Berrettini
7.Wawrinka
8.Rublev
9.Tsitsipas
10.Medvedev

Betting on Tsitsipas and Medvedev false dawn to be completely exposed, on Thiem becoming all-courts performer, Wawrinka making 1 more huge Slam appearance (SF or F), and also Rublev’s star to light up, had an impression he is almost ready for it at the end of 2019 season. Also I see ADM nearing top 10, or even breaking into top 10 at some point of the season.

Not sure if it’s my final pick for 2020, still quite a few factors I didn’t consider.

A little too hopeful in the NextGen, methinks.
Here's mine:
1. Thiem
2. Djokovic
3. Nadal
4. Tsitsipas
5. Medvedev
6. Federer
7. Shapovalov
8. De Minaur
9. Zverev
10. FAA or Raonic

Would love to see Chung back, though. He's been destroyed by injuries since his AO run.

Can’t really see Nadal and Djokovic being knocked off the top 2. Sadly, I think the nextgen will begin to overtake Federer though, as he may fall out of the top 5

You do realise thiem only won 1 match at slam level outside the FO. He's gonna need to improve big time if you see him getting number 1

But it’s highly unlikely that they all will go down in the same year. Maybe a Next Gen player as #3 is possible, or with extreme luck even #2, but nobody will outperform all of the Big 3, let alone 3 players will do it. Also it’s always another one of the Nex Gen who has his moment, and not the same player for a whole year. That’s not #1 stuff.

The OP claims they're not trolling. The bolded names are hilarious at the numerical rank given. For Thiem to end up the year at #1, the big three will have to experience collapses in the slams (which hasn't happened for 15 years) and Thiem will miraculously win 2 slams. Alex De Minaur will have to win a Masters 1000 and go deep in slams. Shapo has won one event in his entire life, so his chances of winning Masters 1000's or reaching finals is slim to none next year.

Not happening.

It's not likely, but I could see Thiem winning Barca, Madrid, one other clay Masters, and RG, 4R to QF showings at HC Slams, and one non clay M1000 if he has a breakthrough season. He'd beaten Nadal plenty of times on clay and Rafa will be 34. Thiem at #1 is bold, but not laughable by any means.

I don't understand the logic of the argument: since Shapo has only won one 250 title at 20 years old then his chance of winning a Masters 1000 next year is therefore zero or very close to zero. The counter-argument that "he has progressed every year at his young age and therefore he will probably progress next year" seems more logical to me. At 15th in the world he hasn't got far to go to join the elite.

100%. He reached a M1000 final this year, not that far fetched to see him reach a few more next year.

You could be right about the NextGen overtaking Federer next year, but I'm not so sure. One of them might beat Federer at any single slam or masters 1000, but none of them have yet to show even close to the consistency Federer still shows over a full season. Tsitsipas might beat him at, say, the Quarters of Melbourne, but Roger's gonna be in Quarters or later pretty much everywhere, whereas all of the NextGen guys have yet to show they can consistently even make it to the second week at slams.

Expecting mostly the same stuff in the top 4, with the exception of Federer. I recon Medvedev won’t overtake Roger because he himself has a great year, but because Fed has a bit of a letdown. As for the rest, I’m not really sure about Tsitsipas, just played it safe with him. With Berretini, I really expect big things from him. A masters or two for the Italian, and another big run at a slam. Thiem... there’s no way he can keep this run of 2nd place one clay. He either falls off or goes to the top. I highly doubt the latter happening. Same with Alex, I only see him falling further. Shapo and Dimitrov have really improved, especially at the tail end of the season, definitely expecting bigger things from them. Especially El Shapo.

Fed might go down not necessarily because of results but I predict he will focus mostly on Slams and will participate in even fewer tourneys than this year. Still enough to participate in the WTF tho.

Thiem at #1 is a legit possibility if he sweeps the clay season.
I'm shocked so many predict Domi to be ranked #1 at the end of 2020.

What are the chances of Thiem sweeping the clay season? Nobody but one man has managed that since 2005. Thiem just choked away the YEC final, why in the world are people thinking he will dethrone Rafa on clay? Thiem will have to win one slam (probably two) to be ranked #1. He's not winning RG and he hasn't a prayer at Wimbledon (and yes, we know... "He beat Fraud at Halle one year!") He'll have to hope for Nadal and Djokovic to win little and he himself will have to win a slam and be a finalist at another.

Not happening.
