the trademark of the modern ATP forehand is that the takeback is shorter (more compact) and the wrist stays loose which creates the wrist lag.

That's why you see much more of this wrist lag with the typical male player. But Swiantek has it too.

Grigolo's FH is pretty, but Iga's FH is closer in fugliness to Khachanov, Tiafoe, Koks. The backswings are so weird, Sviontek's elbow with his FH is so close to her torso.

Well done by the teenager. Fantastic run, well played.

Jeezus, people talking about ATP-style forehand being the difference. Very typical TTW lameness. That's not the difference.

If there is a shot that Swiatek is using to gain the upper-hand, it is her *backhand*. Not the forehand. Her backhand sets up her forehand.

Not sure anyone said exactly that, so you're grappling with a bit of a straw man.

Swiantek is hitting a very solid ball off both sides. Though her forehand has certainly been better than Kenin's out there today.

I just remarked that she hits a better topspin forehand than most on tour. Which she does. Her technique is well-suited for creating effortless topspin even when she hits a less loopy ball.

The WTA is incredibly strong with so many majors-winning talents. Swiatek handled herself well all throughout this French Open, and won every match in convincing fashion. From the looks of her game, she is not seen her final major--and neither has Kenin.

Kenin has an impressive game, esp. from the baseline. It's just that Swiatek has a skill set on a different level. She's playing ATP style tennis, both when it comes to the toolbox, execution and tactics. Congrats!

My thought it that people are desperate to avoid the FH so they go to the BH. They realize that that stroke is a weapon too and not just a rally ball. I think the fear of the FH sets everything up.

Well said. We can agree to disagree.

well, you both are probably kind of right

the forehand is clearly her biggest weapon, in my eyes, and i suspect most eyes

but her ability to hit the BH DTL very well forces players to hit to her forehand - ie she doesnt allow folks like Kenin to make the match about XC backhands - she can change the crosscourt with a beautiful BH DTL at will

Yes. There's so much depth in the WTA and it's been that way for a long time.

One thing that sets the top players apart, I think, is mental strength and ability to control their anxiety. Something Serena hasn't been able to do of late.

So, it's especially nice to see a young player like Iga not neglect the mental part of the game.
