The WTA season has finished early this time. Sadly we didn't get to see anywhere near as much action as we usually do, so this thread is going to be brief as well, but we all hope the strict measures and precautions taken since spring will result in a better 2021 and distant future, both for us and the pros.
Due to the ranking points being frozen since March and very little number of events played since the restart, there have been no noticeable changes in the WTA rankings. Ashleigh Barty has retained her number 1 ranking throughout the year. Sofia Kenin climbed as high as 4th after her maiden Slam victory in Melbourne and a final appearance in Roland Garros. Naomi Osaka is fast becoming the most successful player of her generation and an all time great in the making with a second US Open title and her 3rd Major victory. Polish teenager Iga Swiatek made an incredible impression in Paris, not dropping a single set en route to a Roland Garros title. Although she didn't add a Major to her cabinet like in the previous two seasons, Simona Halep won three tournaments, a season high number. Same goes for Aryna Sabalenka who returned to top 10 after her victories in the last two tournaments this year. Elena Rybakina has reached top 20 after making a season high six finals. Victoria Azarenka finally showed some of her old form, winning Cincinnati and reaching the US Open final where she narrowly fell short. After a three year drought, Serena Williams won her first title since giving birth, though her quest for the 24th Slam continues...
