Sinner-Alcaraz I

The first of a potentially massive H2H series between two of the highest rated young prospects in the game. They have met once at the Challenger level in 2019, a three set affair taken by Chuck. They now find themselves meeting in the second round of the Paris Masters. Current odds have Sinner a pretty big favorite (-275 to +225). Whom do you think will take the first Tour H2H between the two of them?

Sinner should take care of him.

Alcaraz running a little on fumes throughout that Herbert match, not a lucky win per se but I think it’s clear Alcaraz isn’t going to be able to bring his best level to this match. Sinner’s improved serve should make the difference.

But I don’t give a f about the result really and neither should you. These two might just end up playing each other 40 times! This could end up being the next great rivalry of the game. The groundstrokes will be massive, the shot tolerance high, and the highlights aplenty. Definitely will make time to watch the full match even if I have to do it on replay. Let’s hope it delivers.

I really hope so. Let this be the first of many more to come!

But, but - how can we tell them apart as they are playing in the same kit  . All jokes aside, it should be a nice match. I reckon Sinner will win it in three sets.

THE VERY BEST PRISON SINCE RAFA NEDAL - EVAH. WILL WIN EVERYTHING - ( 21 TIMES )... !

Sinner can be almost flawless from the baseline and his 1st serve is a good weapon but he also can randomly fold, which Alcaraz won't. Though facing a younger opponent though, and right after getting in the top 10, Sinner probably will put on a good performance.

Hoping that Alcaraz can push this to 3. Pre-match, Yannik is the likely winner but I wouldn't bet on it.

Obviously I want Carlos to win. I hope he plays his best and gives it his all! If Sinner wins I of course will be disappointed but I know Carlos can win the match if he plays his best tennis.

Carlos has the best attributes of both Federer and Nadal whereas Sinner only has Federer's best attributes. I think in the long run they will both do great in their careers but I think the combination for Carlos will help him immensely in his career.

For me Carlos plays with the best aspects of both Federer and Nadal; Sinner plays like Federer but not Nadal. At least that is my take on it. Obviously I prefer Carlos, he's my new favorite player while Rafa is away.

sub optimal start from Alcaraz as he drops serve in the opening game. Sinner looking hungry, but the 2 DFs from Carlos were not great

Sinner started the match looking for alcarazs UEs, and found them, lets see if carlos can react

Sinner plays a bit like Djokovic in a wheelchair ;)

Good carlos bringing him to the net, where he is really not comfortable, breaks back

We may be in for a classic, gentlemen.

Sinner’s net game continues to let him down, by the way. Interesting to see how that skill progression will go. Two crucial missed volleys kept him from taking Zverev to 4 or 5 at the US Open, and he seems to not deal with forecourt balls well (see Tiafoe match)

What a federer like half volley from carlos and great angled volley right after

Rats looks fully in the zone while Sinner seems a bit deflated, understandably. A match like the Tiafoe one, after such a long run, can really clip your wings. Some players would take 6 months to get over a loss like that. Sinner's not one of them, but today he just doesn't look like he'll have enough.

Not looking good for Jannik right now...

Tiafoe and this draw really putting a dent in his WTF aspirations.

I want Sinner to make it because I like him and I think it would be cool to have a young gun from New Next Gen in the WTF. However, he shouldn't be handed a spot, especially when Casper has racked up 5 titles and Hubie as 3 titles (one of them a M1000) and a Wimbledon semifinal on the season. If Sinner stays in the top 8 and gets the Turin bid, it should be because he was better than either Ruud or Hurk (or Norrie). With 4 titles this year, he has a good resume and making the top 10 shows his early potential. However, if he can't beat Tiafoe after being up 6-3, 5-3 with a golden opportunity in Vienna and then loses to Carlos today, it means that he isn't quite ready yet this year.

Sinner was playing too cautiously, trying to draw errors from Alcaraz, instead just gave him ability to swing freely. And now Sinner is again becoming very nervous. Could be a straight-set win for Carlos.

I underestimated Carlos’ level clearly.

Sinner to me seems like a great ball striker and great at hitting topspin groundstrokes from the baseline specifically. Bigger serve as well.

Alcaraz on the other hand, is a great all around tennis player.

He has real touch and net instincts, and definitely is more athletic and able to mix spins/variety. His ability to hit better shots off an unstable base than Sinner made the difference in that TB.

His net game is all kinds of terrible to be honest. He nets routine volleys left and right.

He's still really young though, lot of time to improve and he's damn good at what he does.

As I have written before Carlos is the more complete, mature player with a better understanding of the game.

The Sinner has the bigger if somewhat shaky serve and heavier shots.
