I am thinking we will see something like Norries match with Rublev a few weeks ago. I'll probably bet Norrie tomorrow if the odds are appealing enough.

I keep going back and forth as to who to predict for tomorrow's final. I am going to have to think about it some more. A case can be made for both of them, it could be a really close hard-fought match!

He could keep the ball inside the lines for a start.
I root for Basi (as I'm also a power player) to win against a pusher like Norrie!

I like the British commentator, (that woman had been British #6 and won less than 200k USD), way better than Chris Evert, Marry Carillio, etc.

She said that it is a pleasure to watch Basi when he is in such a form etc! Very technical comments, pertinent during the whole match.

It's more fun to watch Basilashvili hit big FH winners and win the tournament, but I have the feeling Norrie is going to take it. Norrie is a counter-puncher that puts a lot of balls in play -- a grinder with good point construction. Norrie has no big weapons, but has enough power to finish a point at the right time.

It seems only yesterday when I saw him play and win a Challenger against Sandgren. They were both hovering around #90-100 at the time. Sandgren is now back down to #96. Coming Monday Norrie will be at #17 (or #16 if he wins).

Really cool final, I'm so impressed with Norrie's incredible rise in the rankings and his game. I think he wins in two.

Norrie must have one of the tightest games on tour right now, gives you no free points at all, like absolutely nothing. His forehand has more shape and depth to it, plus a bit more pace and a lot players are struggling to read that forehand amazingly. The amount of times I've seen players left wrong footed or fooled by the change of direction from his forehand... He rarely makes tactical mistakes, factor in that with his relentless movement, he is becoming incredibly difficult to beat. You actually have to be on your game most of the time to beat Norrie these days. And that's a huge question mark when it comes to Basil lol... Though Basil is a different sort of beast the longer he's in a tournament.

Norrie beat Basilashvili like an absolute drum in Rotterdam earlier this year. 6-0, 6-3. Hard to see what Nikoloz is going to bring differently this time.
Two titles since then. The first the week after Rotterdam.

His season has actually been three different narratives. Part 1, a tale of hangover from the courtroom and social media drama; Part 2, resurgence beginning with the Doha title (upsets of Millman, fedr Fritz in a similar shoreline as today and RBA in the final. On to clay and a Munich title (beat Ruud and Struff) and then a solid SF result on grass at Halle from qualies. Part 3 has been his lag time beginning at Wimby with a 1R toughie loss to Murray. NA HC was not kind until this week and the 2R escape vs ARV.

Basil will bring a lot. Also, the contrast in finals is ebony to albino. Basil lost his first two finals but has now won his last five. Norrie is 1-5.

So I pretty well saw no matches whole tournament due to running my business at peak season and finally have time tomorrow and this match is 7pm ET which is late for me as I'm leaving for prior plans.

Normally I guess I wouldn't care but I have a feeling this match will be pretty great and picking Basilashvilli in 3.

Then either deal with it or don't watch. ******** and moaning doesn't change it.
I won’t watch it and I suspect many others won’t I will wager a bet this will be the least watched masters in history, sad state of affairs for the game these two in a final

I'll enjoy this match more than the usual top tenners finals.
Early and middle-round matches in almost any tournament are less predictable, more spontaneous, more fun. More chances taken when there's less to lose. The vested top tenners worry too much, often making their matches stress-laden borefests.
These guys are still fun to watch.

I am not sure at all who will win the final today. I am sticking with my predicting who I am not rooting for as that has worked the last several days so I am predicting Smiley to win today. I would prefer for Norrie to win but I like them both.

A sad state of affairs for who?

The finalists? No, they've played well and beaten their opponents. That's their job and they've done it well. They deserve to be there.
You? Well if you only want your favourites in the final then it says more about your wish for tennis to satisfy you than your appreciation for the sport of tennis as a whole.
The sport? The sport of tennis is bigger than anyone who has ever played or will play and will easily accommodate more first-time champions.

I, for one, love the fact than unexpected names are coming through and winning the bigger tournaments. First Raducanu at the US Open and now Norrie or Basilashvilli here. Brilliant! They'll likely put on a good show and it doesn't take two players in the top 5 to make for an entertaining match. More power to them.

Sad state of affairs for Tennis if these two are making masters finals.

You can spin it whichever way you want but what would be usually a first round match between a player with no backhand and a ball basher is not a great advert for Tennis.

Good perspective.

Wish there were more of us to appreciate the fact the game was here long before 8/8/81, too often viewed as the beginning of tennis. Negative Nathans, unfortunately, abound like booby traps in the jungle with their batteries charged to revel in their “Gotcha!” moments when a work in progress has a minor hiccup.

LOLOLOLOL! Just because it isn’t conventionally aesthetic doesn’t mean it isn’t a weapon at a tournament that may be the first when as many backhands have been hit as forehands. Glad I know to listen to qualified analysts like Craig O’Shannessey point out facts rather than pure delusional hunches.

It isn’t a weapon! Players making a series of UEs does not say otherwise.

O Shannessey spends more time giving moral lectures than talking Tennis

The match might s*ck but lashing at the two players before the start of the match is embarrassing.
+ Nobody is forcing you to watch the match lol
Why so many people are complaining about that final ?

It's like playing lottery with a final like this, lol. I thought Fritz and Dimitrov would win the SF and here we go.
Basilashvili has MUCH better stats in finals including this year. And he beat Tsitsipas... Norrie didn't beat any top-5. So I say Basil in 3.

I really really want Norrie to win and I picked him in 3, but it good go either way. Both Tsitsipas and Fritz had their chances.

This as a masters final is a joke! It’s a first round match
Agreed. Worst Masters final for a while. This is sadly what tennis will be like without big 3 and without any consistency among the other top players. Both these players are challenger level, no way they should come close to a masters final.

Also why is Norrie listed as British but he has this hybrid Australian/South African accent? What is up with that?

Norrie is the poster child for the Churchill riddle/mystery/enigma analogy. He struggled badly vs Sandgren until the bagel set conclusion, then went three again vs RBA and Paul. From QFs though he’s a rock. He pounded Schwartzman with his “non-existent” backhand, 0&2. Now he’s neutralized Dimitrov in straight sets.

I expected a tightly contested final in SD two weeks ago after Norrie dismissed Rublev to reach the final but that didn’t happen either.

These are the facts that leave me wondering why he’s riddle, mystery and/or enigma.

Basil in three.

Your lack of knowledge of his background is almost as alarming as your snobby attitude about the final. I could share the details but it will fall on deaf ears so I won’t waste my time. Just a hint: no Aussie ties to his background.

I find it rich that an obvious Djokovicfan sledges the final when your idol chose to skip IW in favor of licking his wounds from the best slam result since AO’17. You want an upgrade? It could have happened if cowardly Joe Kovic had made time in his schedule to be #1 of 96 players these past two weeks.

It's this weirdly extended, earlier started summer just finally tapering off in this crazy state of Cali which I've been trapped in most of my life (and have seen my locale assimilated into another new little-mexico city/county over the past decades plus, where my limited hs spanish years ago has ironically been of more slight forcibly use). I don't live near Indian Wells, but in a similar enough desert type landclass, where the summer heat has weirdly infused into the surroundings and buildings and the air, as it's finally changing into autumn now with this year's IW postponed to now and coming back in 5 months. It's still been a crazy confined covic year, particularly with the politics and propaganda of this state, with more venturing out, but plenty still wary and concerned. Didn't Bashi win Doha after overpowering Fed? Still, I don't doubt Djoker and Nadal will at least be back for AO, and continuing their slam-race, and Fed will make another attempted comeback next year probably..

I’ve rarely cared about a big match less. I’ll probably end up watching it and enjoying it. At a push, I’ll cheer for Norrie and then avoid all U.K. sports media for the rest of the year.

This is life after the Big 3 (occasionally 4). People 'd rather watch curling than this Master's final.

Nikoloz was hitting some of the nastiest I/O backhands you'll ever see, such a rare shot and to see it executed with that much pace was amazing, literally made me lol

Well, Basilashvili for a start has won 3 titles at ATP500 level so a Masters 1000 is obviously the next step up for him. So maybe quit with the gratuitous insults?

Norrie was born in South Africa to British parents (which entitles him to British nationality) but moved to New Zealand with them as a young kid and largely grew up there hence his New Zealand accent. He couldn't get any sponsorships to play tennis in New Zealand so he moved to the UK with his parents where he got the required sponsorship deals.
