Age had caught up to her in the early '10s. She's long lost her movement. Her serve is what's been covering her tail for the past decade.

Swiatek on her side has had a p***-easy draw, and she'd better not blow it. Add one to the 100 list of reasons why judging a player's 'greatest' by their 'total slams' is a joke.

It’s not only the age but she has never gotten back into the physical shape since giving birth.
She had her chance to break Court's record many times but sadly she failed in all those finals and semi finals.
Finally caught up with Roger too
It appears so, although he is coming off from injury. Seems like 40 is about the age you will stop winning big tournaments. Djokovic and Nadal better make the most of these next 5-6 years of their career.

Kontaveit gave her a serious challenge in her match against Swiatek. But yeah, Swiatek is just a cut above.
In the first set, she had a test. But a player who 'struggles' in Set 1 then outright bagels in the Set 2 ala Martinka '97 conveys to me that they weren't 100% trying in the first place. Where some people see her getting back to form, I see her tanking. Either way, she hasn't been on the ropes so far.

Who?

Clay is wild. It seems that so many players were and are being raised on the hard courts and hence the competitive nature at top of the sport at the AO/USO but RG and Wimbledon to a smaller extent is being surprised by these random players who actually specialize on this surface. So many top players perform at the hard court slams but have mediocre results at RG and also Wimbledon. Just look at slam champs like Kerber (best result is a QF at RG despite winning all 3 other slams). Wozniacki won AO and made finals at USO but never went past the 4R of Wimbledon and QF of RG. Naomi Osaka is the obvious choice, she's won the AO and USO twice but never gone past the 3R at Wimbledon and RG. Pliskova has made 6 slam QF's or better at hard court slams but just 1 at RG and 0 at Wimbledon. These players aren't being trained on clay and that's why we get so many surprise QFists and SFists and even champions like Ostapenko. She won a slam at RG, made a QF at Wimbledon yet never went past the 3R at AO/USO.
Thats the tricky 1st week were grass is still semi fast after that it plays like hard. Novak in 2014 and 2015 lost more games in the 1st week than the 2nd. Also for women it's best of 3 a player can redline one set (Aderson) you are in trouble.

She’s playing for the fun of the game but i can’t see her doing anything in the shape that she’s in.
I don't think she's playing completely for fun, so says her meek schedule, but these fans aren't watching for fun either. They're watching to see her and Osaka play- and when either player is out, the interest plummets. So while people're so hurried to run those two out of town, they'd better be careful what they wish for. Most fans watching now will only care about Swiatek and Gauff.

It was more like rusty Iga who was playing at 60% of her best against peaking Kontaveit who played at her 101%. When Kontaveit figured out that her best possible game cannot win her even a set against lazy-footed Iga she totally collpased and Iga went into hitman mode.

That works for discussions of players at their bests, but the women can't forever play at their bests. We have to take the average they actually show on the court. Otherwise, Martinka would still be winning every slam, today.

Don Budge, the man whose achievement developed the notion that these four arbitrary tournaments are all that matters in a player's portfolio. I should more probably be blaming Sampras.

Wow, according to the stats, Rybakina won more 1st service points than Serena did (69% to 59%) and more 2nd service points (52% to 41%). That's impressive against the supposed greatest server ever in women's tennis. Rybakina also won more return points (49% to 38%). Total points won: 66 to Rybakina, 51 to Serena.

I watched that first set. Iga was definitely on the ropes. She recovered and managed to take the set because she's got a champion mentality, but it was definitely in doubt.

You're right. I'm paranoid for another champion of past-caliber, but she was just shaky as per her hardcourt performances.

Elena Rybakina got a big win in the 4th rd. over Serena Williams 3, 5. Serena still trying win another GS to tie Margaret Court continues on!

She was smacking 112mph first serves according to NBC. Those are harder than some men in the QF usually hit. Her height and power deserve some credit, Serena is obviously a heavily declined mover but the power Rybakina generates is no joke.

Serena is playing to break the slam record. Very little to do with love of the game, as Serena plays few tourneys outside the slams.

There's a price to pay for a nearly 40 year old former champion to continue to win, and Serena hasn't paid that price. Too many jelly rolls on that body. Too much cottage cheese on the legs. Harsh, but true. Lose 15+ pounds, get in better shape, play more tournaments... then you've given yourself the best possible chance to win another slam. May still not be good enough. Body may or may not hold up, hand/ eye coordination decling with age, split second decision making....but it gives her the best chance.

But, a cakewalk draw at Wimby or U.S Open, like this F.O, is still a possibility. That window is closing fast though.

I think Mattek-Sands may have found the right new partner, one that won't make miss Safarova so much (and that can actually rival her).

Look at that. All that happiness after defeating the number one seeds (Hsieh/Mertens) after being 1-5 down in the final set. Go TekTekBOOM team! (for starters, the name is miles better than Bucie)

Sadly, this week I won't be able to watch as many matches (or none at all some days)... All tomorrow's matches look interesting, but that Kenin-Sakkari has the potential to be a super slugfest. Oh well, at least I leave this RG loving Iga even more and finding 3 more men to root harder for and soften the inevitable Federer/Delpo withdrawal I'm gonna have (probably) pretty soon.

Kostyuk is very good. But she isn't as great as Iga on clay. But should have a chance if Iga is tight. Remember that she almost lost against Krejcikova in Rome. The same week she trashed Pliskova.
Like I said earlier, if Iga plays at her level. When she played Krejcikova, she was like 40% at the most.
First set of that match I can easily qualify to be the worst tennis I've ever seen in my life.

True. One thing people seem to forget is the extremely windy conditions during that match. They seemed to trouble Iga a lot more than Barbora.

It’s funny that some may view this as an upset but Krejcikova is on an 8 match winning streak and is ranked #33 while Sloane is #59 and looking to win 4 straight matches for the first time since the French Open in 2019.

You were so right, and the fact she plays so much doubles too means she's so used to winning and so match sharp! I was nervous because I know she was a huge threat to Sloane but didn't expect such a drubbing!

Demolition complete.

Barbara Krejcikova continues her win streak making it 9 straight to take out the 2018 runner up Sloane Stephens 6-2 6-0.

She’s into her first singles slam QF. Of course she’s a former #1 in doubles with 2 slam titles to her name.
