Collins bagels Kalinina in the first set. Should she get through this match she'll likely face Serena. Think Danielle will thrive on that one...

^The little I watched Dani's match ('s first set), she was once again really 'on'. Winners from right, left and even out of nowhere. If she can keep the level should easily send Serena packing.

Mainly I have been watching Badosa-Kovinic. There has been plenty of all kinds of nice to see! Badosa won quite easily the first set 6-2, but Kovinic is starting to play on the level she can. I await much tighter second set and maybe even a third. Badosa is of course possible success in this tournament, but her weakness is definitely the second serve. I also think that she doesn't have much variety in her game.

Badosa is destroying Kovinic.

6-2 5-0 in 49 minutes. Has to be the favourite to make it out of that part of the draw to the SF although Vondrousova is also tempting.

Paula Badosa thrashes Kovinic 6-2 6-0 and will face Bogdan in the 3R.

Bogdan was the beneficiary of Osaka's withdrawal so despite being in the 3R of a slam, it's Badosa who should win this easily.

Tighter set and Kovinic's rise didn't materialize after all... Badosa is not playing shiningly impressive tennis but effective it is. And for some reason after great two weeks on American clay Kovinic still is very disappointing on real(!) European red clay. :( Would have been so nice if this would have been tight match.

Already over! 6-2, 6-0. Paula's smile was such that almost all of the disappointment vanished right away! :D:giggle:

Badosa made the 4R at RG last year with wins over Sloane and Ostapenko before losing to Siegemund.

She's been the breakout star of 2021 with:
SF in Lyon
SF in Charleston (including a win over #1 Barty and top 10 Bencic)
SF in Madrid
Champion in Belgrade just under 2 weeks ago.

Collins wins 6-0 6-2.

Hercog also knocks out Garcia in straight sets!.

Some dominating results today.

Of the 8 matches played, just 2 went 3 sets and 2 had bagels.

Watched the Bencic match highlights and Kasatkina looks legit - though youtube highlights from one match probably isn't enough to reach that conclusion. Lol.

I always forget about Bencic and always surprised how high she's ranked because she never seems to do anything. I must overlook her week to week.

Update on this:

Hercog
Vondrousova
Badosa

One of these players will be in the French Open SF.

Vondrousova the only player to have made a slam SF (and final)
Kasatkina and Cirstea have made slam QF's.

Probably will be asleep by then but i'm interested in Sabalenka v Sasnovich. Always interesting when you face your countrywoman .

Venus loves the tour and it is the only life she has known since she began at 14. Most players on the tour love the tour lifestyle: travel, practice, matches, fame, interviews, talking to others on the tour, etc... Why retire? She is single and still in the top 120! She create her own challenge reality show with Bronk as co-star. Bronk went back to playing, the rest is history! LOL!

Plus she's said on the Racquet Mag podcast recently that she loves the WTA health insurance!

Serena has played an entire set, and not a single comment on TTW

Up 6-3 2-2, had two break points to go up 3*-2, but instead now facing three break points to go down 2-4* in the second. Edit: all saved, deuce! ...and one more... and break!

6-4 2-4*, can Buzarnescu win this set?

Sorry to see Venus out of the doubles.
Happy to see the no.1 seeds through.

I can answer that with a firm 'maybe'. Serena breaks right back, 3*-4.

Zero comments later it's 5-6 15*-30 Serena in set 2. Buzarnescu two points from the set.

Edit: BOOM! Buzarnescu takes the second set, into a decider we go! (TTW goes wild!)

I read this and started watching the match.
Williams will probably take it, but some great tennis from her opponent to take the second set.
I'm assuming Williams wore something different for her first match given a few complimented it.
This one looks great to the waist - she looks trimmer - and a tad odd below the waist.

What a shot to take the second set.

of course Serena finding a way to lose.... just not the same mover she was before she had the baby

Ah ah. Great point (and super solid defense by Buzarnescu). Both laughing about how they were able to elongate the play.

The AO match between Osaka and Williams got a lot of comments on the match thread, but generally speaking very few people care about women's tennis, as can be seen on this forum - the first round match between Nadal and Popyrin got more comments than the entire women's tournament so far.

Fallacious argument. That would suggest that this forum and its members somehow are reflective of the general tennis fan population. Where is your proof?

Whilst not possibly true of the general population, women's tennis rarely gets a mention at any tennis club I've played at.
The exceptions being something controversial or a local player doing well.

It's funny, I didn't use to watch it, but for a while the grand slam courts were so fast that men's matches seemed like a bit of a serve contest. That's when I discovered women's tennis with actual (gasp) rallies. But also 6-1 2-6 6-0 scorelines. You win some you lose some :)

Edit: oh, and to finish the point, it's funny because by now the courts are so slow that the men's matches are never ending slug fests.

There's been some great matches.
And I've enjoyed it a great deal more with Barty doing so well as I enjoy the variety of her game, and the lack of shrieking.
The couple of players l dislike lose more often than not, which just increases my enjoyment.

Ah ah ah. Buzarnescu moonballing the s**t outta that ball and winning the point with a drop. Pretty neat.
She really doesn't deserve this 5-1 down.

That was quite possibly the worst decision-making I've seen from Serena in years. For about 30 straight seconds, she had the chance to put it away. And she made it a practice session. Her body's quickly catching up to her

Too bad Osaka withdrew. While some of these players (Kasatkina, Badosa) could trouble her on clay, she had a pretty good chance of making the semis given the current playing conditions and this field.

Lucky you, I foolishly am rooting for Bianca, Amanda, Nao.. I mean "she who shall not be discussed" and Sloane. To calm my nerves I've decided to also root for Iga :D

That point actually reminded me of the '02 final at Melbourne (Serena bopping 20 backhands and overheads back to the Romanian). Giving up all those power positions. If Venus is turning into Kournikova, Serena's definitely morphing into the late Hingis.

All someone has to do to beat Serena these days is to make her run back and forth all match, although granted, that's easier said than done.

She did win a title this year but has been doing poorly at slams.

There, there. My three favourite players used to be Radwanska, Bencic and Safarova. I know the pain (I might even know it better than you, actually ). But I'm also developing a soft spot for Kenin (she's a brat, but when she's on, she can be an amazing counter-puncher), Sabalenka (I'm usually not big on big babe tennis and I'm not fond of all that screaming, but she's a cool cat) and Swiatek (great game, great composure and seems an all-around decent person). Andreescu might be an interesting prospect to follow, but I'm a Del Potro fan too. There's only so much "always injured" suffering I can take.

You can get offended but I'm just stating facts. Men's tennis is more popular among tennis fans and the general public.

Really liked Radwanska and Safarova. Just enjoyed how they played.
Bencic, not fussed with her and those similar with their numerous "come on" or some such. Annoyingly Gauff is joining that group as l previously liked watching her play.

Kenin is on a roll! Looks like her old self again! Won 1st set 7-5 and leads 3-0 in the second set with Kenin serving!

Kenin is playing lights out in the second set. Even if she gives up a game, I think she’ll close it out soon.

Linette breadsticks Barty. Ash should've just pulled out after her R1. Will look far worse losing 2R easily and staying #1.
