Nadal does need to improve as Gasquet is an easy target for him. He typically plays a lot better as a major goes onward though so he should still be fine

That attempted drop shot pickup from Gasquet illustrates the difference between a good and a great mover on clay.
He ran all the way, tried to pick up the drop shot and then slide. He was a little late. A great clay court player would have slid into the drop shot, that way saving time and being able to do more with it.

Man just 40 minutes left till 12 at night in paris hopefully rafa can get this over quickly and cut a cake for his birthday if he hasn't already

Also illustrates the difference between Gasquet who is basically a pigeon and like 3-7 on clay this year and world #7 Gasquet who made GS semifinals. His BH is still uniquely great but his movement is nowhere near competitive enough

Yeah this might be the best I've seen Gasquet play in a while. I guess it shows how much he's fallen, but it's still decent stuff from him.
He was very bad in the first set. Started playing better after that, and Nadal also helps him with tons of stupid errors.

You've got me beat then. I honestly can't remember the last time I watched a match with Gasquet in it, but it was definitely over 2 years ago.
Yeah I mostly watched Gasquet in Cincy 2019 because Murray was playing him in the opening round but I decided to follow his tournament after seeing he was doing well. Made the SFs I believe.

Honestly not bad from Nadal in very humid night conditions. Gasquet played well and Nadal still wins with 6-0, 6-2 sets and in the other he had a set point for 6-2.

Pretty expected result although surprised at the number of games that gasquet won. Rafa’s serve was ok but not great. Not enough first serves. That has to improve.

I’m not doubting Nadal is the clear favorite and will most likely win

but in comparing 2020 and 2021 I’m only looking at RG results, nothing else matters I think

and when you look at that Nadal looks a bit worse. Enough to make a difference in the end? Probably not
Looks much slower laterally

French male players went 3-14 in first-round singles action at this year's French Open. One of those matches featured two Frenchmen, one of whom was Richard Gasquet, the other being 20-year-old Hugo Gaston, who won seven games from Gasquet.

Rafael Nadal leads the head-to-head against Richard Gasquet 16-0 and has won their last eleven encounters in straight sets.

Alors, où sont les mousquetaires d'antan ?
Crocked

Richard was a teenage tennis sensation.
Solid talent.
But i never really felt he was lost potential.
He was undersized just as the game was turning big man and physical.
Beautiful OHB.
Not easy having a one hander when most have solid strong 2 handers.
Tough road.

Didn't like what I see. The first set was very clean, but after that Gasquet started playing better and Nadal immediately turned into an unforced errors machine. His serve is totally off, he had problems in almost every service game in the last 2 sets. He can't win against Schwartzman if he plays like that, leave alone Djokovic.

looks like the bounce is really high at night though. standard RG stuff. If Rafa loses it will be because of level not surface or ball

Interesting i feel he would prefer the heat and the humid on the balls. He still likes the court to be fast and the heat causes the high bounce.

Lol

Yep which is why if Djokovic gets to semis he’d prefer to play Rafa in late afternoon/evening without roof than at night with roof on. Roof and night conditions favour Rafa even more.

Still either way Rafa the big favourite but Novak would prefer that.
This is not true at all. Believe me.
Roof and Night conditions NEVER favor Nadal. His spin does not go through the court. The balls also do not bounce up. His offense totally goes awry in such conditions.
RG 2020 was an anomaly. See all of the previous Nadal-Novak matches. Nadal is always more dominant when it is sunny, quick and livelier.
