2021 Medvedev vs 2023 Djokovic at US Open

In the 2021 US Open final, Medvedev denied Djokovic a chance at achieving the CYGS, and 2 years later, Djokovic avenged his loss by defeating Medvedev in the US Open final.
In both of those finals, the runner-up was only able to win 12 games against the champion.
In the 2021 US Open final, Djokovic was visibly under a lot of pressure which, according to many tennis fans, held him back from bringing out his best level, whereas in 2023, he didn't have this kind of pressure, because obviously, after his Wimbledon loss to Alcaraz, he knew that a chance at CYGS was over anyway.

So who wins this hypothetical US Open final match, Djokovic from 2023 or Medvedev from 2021?

It’s hard to say. I think 2021 Med was at least good enough to steal the 2nd set, and Djokovic was looking very gassed… unsure what he had left in the tank if the match was longer and Med’s serve was better so he’d be able to put more pressure on Novak’s return games.

I’d also note though, Med himself cramped up and was quite lucky to get away with the 3rd set in 2021, and his 5 set record is atrocious. He got outlasted by Thiago Seyboth Wild and Zombiedal in Melbourne. So maybe point is moot.

Either way, Djokovic is a much better player, and for that reason, I choose him if he is reasonably focused and physically prepared, as he was in 2023. I will say it could still go either way.

If 2023 Djokovic can finish off the match in 3-4 sets, then he wins.
But if the match goes to 5 sets, then 2021 Medvedev would be favored.

2023 was a full out revenge tour for Djoko. Being deported from AO and banned from the US over vaccine mandates and government incompetency in austraila motivated him to dominate both tournaments.

Although there were a few moments in that 2023 final where I thought if medvedev would win that second set (which he should have) , Novak would not have been able to play medvedev’s style for 3-4 hours had it gone 5.

It truly is a toss up for me. Medvedev 2021 draw didn’t include him exhausting energy physically and mentally over Carlos in the SF in 2023.

Med was not fully charged up after putting it all out there in that 23’ SF against alcaraz.

That said , the level med displayed in the 21’ uso as a whole was pure dominance and that included knocking Djoko off. That was still when he was popping off 130-135 mph on serve with ease. 23 ‘ final his serve was in decline despite the results.
