The Astana Open will take place on September 20-26th in Nur-Sultan (former Astana) in Kazakstan.

The top-5 seeds are:
1. Aslan Karatsev
2. Alexander Bublik
3. Dusan Lajovic
4. Filip Krajinovic
5. John Millman (defending champion)

The winner will get around 47 000 dollars for his trouble and effort.

This will be a rather interesting hard court clash!

Flying in from his native France is the new Challenger Roi, Benjamin Bonzi. The dude is on fire with six Challenger titles overall and three in a row on HC/indoor HC. He has a tasty 1R matchup vs Emil Ruusuvuori, who he dominated in straight sets last autumn at RG’20. The experts have this rated fairly close to a coin flip.

And the winner will meet the byed Lion in the second round.

Top half fully loaded with Karatsev, Bonzi, Borat favorite Kukushkin, rising Ivashka and defending champion Millman. #2 seed Bublik has a much easier path at the bottom of the draw. I’m seeing a Bublik final vs Ivashka. The Belarusian’s only loss in the last month was in 5 sets to Berry at USO. He plays a good game these days.

Another Bonzi scheme?

Silly me…I thought the weather there in Nur-Sultan would be quite warm in late September. Expect nothing above 10 C/50 F this week until the weekend when it gets to a balmy 13 C/55 F.

I liked that young guy who defeated Seppi - Strakov? Can't quite remember his name but I enjoyed his game. He looks to be about 20? Never heard of him before...

Timofey Skatov, 20 year old from Kazhakistan, played an impressive match in his second ever ATP men's tour match, defeating Seppi. He's someone to watch imo.

Nice to see an interest in 250s that're seemingly out in the boonies. No disrespect to Kazakhs but the competition in their metropolis is not so usual to gents like me.

Truly surprising. I've always had a respect for short tennis players. Tim's apparently just 173 cm tall. Hard to imagine if he had to play Opelka.

Ivashka has been playing top 30 tennis for months, I think he will win another title here
Seriously, his hot streak from before the US Open seems to be still going strong. Seems like he played at a pretty high level again today against Skatov, though I only caught the highlights. I wonder what clicked for him recently.

I just read an interview in Spanish to the coach he has had since 2017, a Spaniard. It seems he has been doing well with him ever since, but had bad luck. He got mononucleosis that made him waste months when he first entered the top 100, and when he recovered, lockdown kept him away from his coach for 4 months

Krajinovic losing first set. Duckworth just used his first serve so well. 7:6 for Duckworth..

Duckworth breaks in third game and serving now. 2:1 This smells of an upset. Duckworth serving brilliantly, so slim chance for Krajinovic to break back.

Does Ruusuvuori kind of remind you guys of sinner? The forehand, backhand, movement, quite similar to sinner. But of course less power.

Duckworth is playing surprisingly well at this tournament and seems determined to get to the final. But Ivashka is hanging in there in the second set and is trying to get the match to a third decider set. Strong chance this second set goes to a tiebreak, Duckworth will serve to get it to 6-6 - if Ivashka can break it goes to a third set.

Rooting for Ivashka but am impressed by Duckworth and will be happy for him if he wins this match and gets to his first ATP tour final!

On match point the emergency broadcast test came on and I missed match point! ): Grrr!!!!

Congratulations to Duckworth - he is having an amazing tournament! He makes it to his first ATP tour final! He faces the winner of the Bublik-Kwon match (come on Bublik!)

Ivashka has been impressive, making deep runs in tournaments. He was outplayed today by someone who is determined to win this tournament!

Boring Kwon won so that makes the final easy for me: DUCKWORTH one million percent! He really wants it, I just hope he can get past that dull Kwon.

Has Kwon won an ATP men's tournament yet? If not we are guaranteed a brand new ATP tournament winner tomorrow.

Boring Kwon? Wow that’s uncalled for. What did he ever do to you?

It would be his first atp title and I hope he gets it tomorrow

I don't find Kwon at all interesting as a player.

I hope Duckworth wins his first tomorrow!
Yeah you say that but it sounds really suspicious when you don't give a reason to back it up. Kwon is an offensive baseline player. He doesn't play serve and volley on every point but literally no one does nowadays. He's a really nice guy. He seems generally well liked among his peers. What's boring about him? He wears weirdly colored clothes that don't match and has half of his hair dyed blonde as the rest grew out. What do you want him to do? And what's so exciting about Ducksworth?

It wouldn't bother me as much if I didn't remember this post from you during the US Open:

Rooting hard for Auger-Aliassime. Tiafoe is one of a handful of players on the tour who I simply can't stand, I hated his antics last night - it's a personality thing for me, just don't enjoy watching him play. Auger-Aliassime looks to me to be a 13 year old boy! I like him alright but I can't say he's a particular favorite. Definitely prefer Shapovalov of the Canadian players! I will be rooting for FAA to get to the QF and then lose that match.
We had a short back-and-forth about why you didn't like Tiafoe specifically and you kept saying it was just because of his personality or whatever. That thread got deleted so I can't find those posts anymore.
Name one caucasian player whom you don't like because of their personality and you won't hear from me again. Even better: tell me specifically what you don't like about Kwon and Tiafoe without being vague about it.

Oh brother! Just stop it! I like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Naomi Osaka, Kei Nishikori, Brandon Nakashima, Venus Williams, and Madison Keys (I think she's biracial?). We get to like who we like. I dislike Novak Djokovic and Tennys Sandgren in particular, maybe a few others. I just find Kwon uninteresting.

I feel like Duckworth is determined to win this tournament! May the best player on this day win this tournament. I am rooting for Duckworth.
