Sinner is really really mad. He barely looked at Nadal during the handshake. I like this. I like it a lot. :happydevil:
You could tell from the first point he stepped on court to win. All in all, he played at a very high level. Unfortunately, still lacks enough solutions to finish point against the top guys. And the proverbial sinneritis is still there.

Sinner continues to basically be Zverev without a serve
Sinner vs Zverev IMO

Sinner- better backhand (by far), slightly better forehand.
Zverev - better defense, better movement/reach, better net play and FAR better serve (when it works)
ROS - slight edge Zverev

I would give the edge in intangibles to Zverev (for now) since there are times when everything in his game clicks. During those very brief times he is unplayable.

Sinner's serve is really bad for someone of his dimensions. He can improve his results 200% by just a 30% improvement in his serve.

OMG
What a vintage forehand DTL on MP by Rafa

Good enough performance by Rafa overall, flashes of great but 16UE from forehand is too high for his go to shot. 1st serve still way below his usual.
Sinner still has plenty of work ahead of him.
0-4 in sets vs Rafa and Djokovic.
Ballbashing without tactics and angles can only get you so far.

Great times ahead of Sinner I am sure. Another fun couple of sets between these two, just like the opening two they had in Roland Garros.

Going to be tough defending that Musketeers' Cup but Nadal has this week in Rome and a bit more practice time to get ready. Hopefully by then he will get rid of problems he can get rid of, like some of these forehands and returns...

Nadal would have beaten anyone today and maybe scoreline won't have been worse with anyone, sinner is a serious talent who played the game which is toughest possible imo on clay for rafa currently. Goid signs for Rg for rafa he looked better to me than against sinner at Rg last year

Well, next time don't lose to someone like Popyrin and you'll go further in the draw. :)
He's not unlucky. His karma is perfectly balanced as of now.

Needs maturity in his game. Threw away 40 mins of hardwork with 2 Forehand unforced errors on two sitters at 4-3 30-15 up serving.
It's called "sinneritis". Those of us who haven't missed a match since Bergamo are all too familiar with it. It includes small batches of disheartening UEs at the worst possible moments, finding new and exciting ways to lose points that are already won, and ALWAYS drawing the worst possible opponent as early as possible.

Very good performance from Rafa today, a few FH DTL were missing by a few mm, but towards the end of the match it was finding its range more often.
I agree with you that his serve is not too convincing, not a great first serve percentage, and he's not creating too much damage with it either. That is a key area of his game he has to try and improve before RG.

That's something Prime Djokovic would almost never do. That's the difference between Djokovic and the Next-Gen. 2011-2016 Djokovic would have won this match 6-4 6-4
And his net game was garbage. The smash to give Nadal a set point in the first set at 6-5 40-40 was comical.

Rafa ended that match in brilliant fashion.... I don't understand those that doubt his RG chances, where the BO5 format gives him MORE room for these little lulls we saw at the beginning of the 2nd set. Rafa has SO MUCH TIME and COURT at RG, it's impossible to best him when he's in form. Oh and he will be in form.

We will see. He has to win 7 matches. One at a time.

1. Again Sinner got to face Nadal in very favorable conditions. Cool and super humid. Still it's Nadal in straights.

2. Nadal's groundstrokes took a step forward today.

3. Nadal serve still needs a lot of work.

4. I really respect Sinner's on court demeanor. Super impressive for 19. Always looks extremely calm and collected.

Sinner is so impressive...Rafa keeps surprising - thought Sinner was bullying him in the second....A match like that may affect Rafa further down the line...He should get a day off tomorrow :)

His forehand was better today. But that is also a function of the surface and conditions.
With Madrid - it's altitude, speed etc - Nadal's forehand doesn't work as well there. Especially the court doesn't take as much spin, and the ball tends to fly away for him.
I just have a feeling that with his serve it will be hard for him to win RG.
Right now - today's form - a well playing Novak or Thiem would have beaten the "current" Nadal with serve issues.

But yeah, RG is 2 weeks away so maybe Nadal can fix his serve. He needs to get some technical guidance and maybe have a new coach or something..

Sinner is a more talented version of Djokovic, and therefore it made sense that Sinner was the biggest threat to Nadal at Roland Garros last year.
Its been a long time since we had a prodigy in men's tennis.
Let's hope Nadal and Sinner meet a few more times this year........so Nadal can build up a big H2H lead before Sinner peaks.

He's the only prodigy in tennis.
Sinner saved Nadal by taking Zverev out last year. Zverev would have beaten Nadal in the 1/4 finals.

Zverev is a loser, 0-9 vs. Top 10 players at slams.
Zverev always been great at masters, and never been great at slams.
Does Zverev have a future with slam titles in it? Not if he has to play Nadal and other Top 10 players....
Sinner is a real player, while Zverev is a pretender.

Sinner converted 3 of 4 break points, and saved 10 of 15 break points.

Why he needs practice? Good matches help.
The last thing Nadal needs is practice.
If Nadal plays the exact same level at Roland Garros as he played at Madrid last week, he'll cruise through Roland Garros.

Nadal was up a break mid-way through the 1st Set vs. Zverev........and no chance of him surrendering that break if the match was played at Roland Garros.
Plus Zverev's serve was assisted tremendously at Madrid, so its really the opposite of Roland Garros.

And at Barcelona, Nadal beat Tsitsipas in a close match, but Nadal had championship points at 64 54........so its safe to say Nadal would have won that in straight sets at Roland Garros.
Nadal's current level would cruise through Roland Garros without dropping a set.

Zverev has a great backhand. It’s definitely on par with Sinner’s. It’s his forehand that’s garbage. It’s almost Murray like.

They are close. But I think Sinner's backhand is slightly better. More fluid mechanics, better pace generation, better accuracy DTL - sort of Novak like. He has more easy power compared to Zverev. Zverev though is better on the run while stretching and defending.
Also keep in mind Sinner will also get better since he is 19. Zverev is already matured. By Zverev's age, Sinner's backhand might be 15-20% better than it is now.

Stuff like bolded will make you lose a lot of credibility on this board.
You are comparing a young player with one of the greatest ever. The guy who at 34 has already won 18 slams and has 320 weeks at #1.

To say Sinner is a more talented version of Djokovic is utter and complete baloney.

Even if Sinner exceeds the WILDEST expectations in the next 5-10 years, he will NOT have 10% of the career that Novak Djokovic has.
Djokovic is one of (if not THE) GREATEST players to play Tennis. What is hard to understand in that?
