I was putting all hopes in Zverev stopping Djokovic as gamewise he seemed the one who could do it, but in the end it seems Djokovic's aura so intimidating, so confidence shaking that he can just get away with playing worse. For this final, having overcome the storm that was Zverev Novak had an additional confidence boost and I think the task is even higher for Medvedev now. It's difficult seeing this mental aspect not coming into play to ruin the day no matter what form Daniil brings.
I think Medvedev has to shake the CYGS hoopla and go out and concentrate on his game. He has to have shot tolerance and accept that Djokovic's shot selection will win him points (but that is the same for Medvedev). I have not understood why people thought Zverev was the more likely to defeat Djokovic - I have felt the opposite, because Zverev defeats himself so often and has had a poor record at the Grand Slams. I have confidence that Medvedev can do it so long as he does not get rattled like he did when he ran into the camera a few weeks ago. I disagree with those who say Medvedev has to improve his level of play; I think he needs to maintain his level of play and not allow Djokovic to take that level of play away from him.

Apparently 'true' tennis fans will want the CYGS to happen.
What does that even mean? What is a 'true' tennis fan?
This is a can of worms, people.

Why it's Meddy in 4 or a Djokovic win

  • Djoko's not losing to Meddy in 3, he's way too good for that.
  • Meddy's 2-7 in 5th sets, Djoko's 23-5 since the start of 2011 -> Djoko's not losing to Med in 5
  • Hence Med's only chance is to get it done in 4.
Conclusion: Djokovic wins ;-). Congrats to the majority? (soon to be majority) of the forum

Hard to believe Djokovic won't make it dramatic to own his haters one more time.
I don't know about Med's fitness levels to be honest. Can he last 5 sets?
I actually believe that if the match goes to 5 sets, Med could have an edge assuming he is super-fit. Novak in set 5 usually does NOT win by blasting his opponent away. He tries to grind more.
I'm just not sure if Med can run for 4-5 hours. Given his built, endurance and size. I mean if it was a fully fit Nadal for example - I would have totally bet on Rafa.

Anyway, this match is unlikely to go to 5. I believe Novak will win in 3 or 4.
This is an important match for Daniil. Another straight set loss might be very discouraging for him. Can he show something new tonight. Can he push Novak back?

The bolded is an insane stat. WTF. Novak's literally won every close match.
Absolutely UNREAL stat. There is definitely no hope for Med.

And wow, Med's 5 set record is very poor. I take my earlier comment back. 5 sets is bad news for Med.

This is going to be a different match than AO21 which seems to be dominating commentary on this board. Worthwhile to note it was an awful performance, but it's not the only match they've played and they've usually played very close.

Has anybody else notice that the people who want Djokovic to win provide their evidence - he's just the greatest and is invincible - are all predicting him to win and to do so with no trouble at all? And those of who think Medvedev will win are providing evidence based on how they have actually been playing in this tournament and other factors all of which favor Medvedev?

I am willing to admit that I want Medvedev to win but that isn't the whole reason I am predicting him. The stats back up that he has a strong chance of winning this tournament.

Surely you know that if you don't pick Djokovic then you are a hater and not a true tennis fan? Lol.

I'm with you. The sooner it's over the better lol. And I say that as a 'true' tennis fan lol.
Apparently true tennis fans can only want Djokovic to win! I have been a true tennis fan since I was a child and fell in love with the sport. Martina Navratilova is the player in the 1980's that made me fall in love with tennis. The first male player who captured my heart was Rafael Nadal, and now finally I have a new favorite in Carlos Alcaraz.

I think it will be closer this time. I think both guys are playing too well to get straight settled in this final. Let’s see what happens.

My final score prediction - which is just for fun - is: Medvedev defeats Djokovic 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. This way if I am right I get bragging rights, and if I am way off oh well it was just for fun!

Someone who loves the sport more than they love individual players.
One can love the sport and love many of the players, not particularly like a few players, and still be a true tennis fan. Not everybody loves Rafa and not everybody loves Carlos or Martina N, three of my favorites, and they are still true tennis fans.

Medvedev was ALSO playing very well in AO 2021. But Novak GOATed in that final. And Meddy imploded.
We will know soon enough whether the AO 2021 type matches would be the norm between Novak and Meddy.
But certainly, Med's not doing anything in UsOpen much beyond he did in the AO 2021. The situation is very similar.

My disappointment with Med is how he sometimes falls to red hot players. Last year - UsOpen 2020 SF - I thought he could win with Novak out.
But Med didn't even win a set vs Thiem. It was just a terrible performance.

So Med did not win a set vs Thiem in UsOpen. However Zverev won 2 sets vs THiem. Does that mean GoldieChainz is a much better player in the UsOpen than Med?

You need to be careful, now you're gaslighting.

Focus on you what you believe can happen instead of making posts like this which are flaming Novak supporters. This is the sort of stuff that gets posters into trouble here, and I think you are better than that.

So a man with no slams is that mentally strong, according to TTW, that he will beat and easily, the man with 20 slams and chasing a calendar year slam? That man is the favorite to win on TTW?
Why?

Off to short sleep. Plan to wake up and watch all of it and I recommend everyone that likes tennis but is adverse to Djokovic winning to do the same.

I know Medvedev most probably is losing.

But CYGS is once a lifetime event. As a fan who watches so much tennis, it will be a shame to miss the ultimate tennis feat being achieved.

The problem is you are submitting you objective opinion as evidence. The objective facts will be the match, which is a few hours away. Until then people can only provide opinions, hopes, fears, troll and whatever else. I have no idea who wins. I give the nod to Novak based on the fact he has won 20 of these matches and Med has won 0. Novak has not looked shaken by the occasion, but maybe it all comes out today and he gets blown off of the court? If I had to bet I would bet Novak in 4, but I don't have a clue.

Medvedev can play 4-5 hours; we saw it vs Nadal in USO 2019. He is presumably in better shape now. Matchup is a tossup.

Yes, of course. We don't know who will win but we can base our predictions on stats from this tournament as an indicator of what is likely to happen.

Thats an awesome record in 5 setter by Djokovic. I guess the 5 he lost are
2012 - murray
2013 - nadal
2014 - wawrinka, nishikori
2019 - thiem
Still i disagree with 3 set evaluation. Its better to beat him in 3 sets. Not give any chance

No, not gaslighting. Just getting tired of their unwillingness to acknowledge that Medvedev could win.

Yeah, hopefully it is a situation like Pete and Agassi switching positions at the 2 events. If you're supporting Medvedev or want a close match.

I think Zverev's serve, return and solid power baseline game were the best combo among current contenders to challenge Djokovic. Medeved doesn't have that serve and that's right away more danger, more rallies, more pressure - pretty big feal. And with Daniil's ground game, his strength is consistency and moving opponents around but idk if it'll work as well against Djokovic as Zverev's power-hitting because Novak is consistent himself, covers the court really well and can turn defence into offence quickly if he's not forced to deal with deep powerful shots.

So does Daniil have that level where he can shake up Djokovic's game plan, make him doubt himself and make mistakes so Medvedev can take advantage? I'm not sure. Djokovic may have lapses on his own, but he is very likely to pull it together for a couple games and pounce to get a break and it's, unfortunately, often discouraging enough for the Next Gen to start losing the mental battle, doubt themselves more and play worse.

Better to win is 3, surely. Can I see Med winning in straights? Not at all

I don't disagree that Zverev beats himself sometimes in critical moments. But I actually thought Zverev played really well in that match. Yes, his level dropped in the beginning of the 5th set, but to me that wasn't the factor.

In my mind, Djokovic won that match because of clutch serving. Nothing else. I counted at least ten critical points during the match where Djokovic wasn't able to rally with Zverev and was able to bail himself out with incredible serving.

To me, that was the whole match. I really think if Djokovic had a regular day of serving in that semifinal... he loses that match. The rest of his game wasn't good enough, IMHO.

as much as i would like an even match, djokovic is too good in every aspect of the game, even when his level goes down it doesnt for too long, and he knows exacly what he has to do in every moment of the match, i said djokovic in 4

Hope Nole wins but won't be upset if he doesn't. Things in tennis happen for a reason. Good luck to Medvedev and may the best man win.
That’s my feelings too. I like both these guys. I hope Novak wins as he my favourite and would love to see him make history. If meddy wins though I will be happy for him and will be massive for him getting his first slam and Russian tennis as a whole. I think it will be an epic close match and wouldn’t like to call it.

Get posters into trouble? While I disagree with pretty much everything in his post, why om earth would it get him into trouble? And what does trouble even mean on an internet forum?

Congrats on the upcoming win :)

Medvedev has no net game whatsoever. Djokovic does these days (relative to the current generation of players). The depth Medvedev plays at leaves him vulnerable to drop shots that will force him to the net where he is completely helpless. Novak will play for shorter points and force him to the net, just like in Melbourne. Medvedev’s only chance is to serve lights out and hope the pressure of the moment is too much for Novak. Good luck with that.

He can concentrate all he wants, it's immaterial because his game is grossly inferior to Djokovic in every way except the overhead. And his mental strength is 1/100th of Novak. Literally the only way he can win is for Djokovic to sustain a serious injury and retire from the match. I think the last time we crowned a slam winner when his opponent had to retire was 1990 AO when Edberg had to retire against Ivan in the third set.

So the admins are the reason why this place is modded so militantly these days? I've noticed that a huge fraction of threads get deleted and a significant fraction of my posts are stealth deleted as well (even though I never get an infraction). This forum is ceasing to offer much at this point for this reason as it has quickly lost its personality and soul IMO.
