I don't think "playing through cramps" can cause any lasting damage though, right? So why not stick around and see if it improves.

I wondered the same thing, if the cramping will cause any severe damage... I've gotten charlie horse's in the middle of the night and that hurt like crazy... I cannot even imagine trying to play all out on a court while that's happening to me.

The game isn't more physical than ever if a 34 year old Novak is comfortably outlasting guys who are 22-25. Bringing up Messi who is supported by a team won't change that.
Novak is incredibly fit. And are we really debating if tennis is more physical today than, say, in Borg’s day?,really? They barely moved back then by today’s standards. Fast surfaces were 95% of 3 shot rallies. And in slow surfaces they mostly pushed the ball.

the HIIT type of points that today make up most of the highlight reels, and are the main reason tennis is so much more demanding today, didn’t really exist back then

Yeah, looks horribly painful. Sad to see the match end like that, but you know, kind of great to see a young player tough it out and finish the match. A nextnextgen with character, I'll be darned!

The most fun is a whole body cramp lockout where you need the assistance of others to even take a drink. Those were really great times.

He already did so in the 2009 US Open. He's used to it by now.

I think this one surprised him though. He was clearly ticked off. I think a lot of times, when you're not a huge favorite, the US Open fans also like to see a long match to get their money's worth. Specially if they see an 18 year old. I've been there for Nadal, Federer, and Djoko for easy 3 set wins and it can be a bit of a bummer.

Joe Kovic should know Tallon Griekspoor took down Stanimal a few years back as a WC at Rotterdam. Dropped the opening set before closing 4-6 6-3 6-2. Other than that, the Dutchman hasn’t been a high flyer.

Federer and Del Potro

Think this is the most realistic and pragmatic response to the crowd debate tonight. Also adding in that they're very likely not sober like I said earlier.

Never seen nor heard of this young man Rune prior to this match. This young gun is going to be feared as he gets a few more years under his belt. If he stays healthy, the tennis world better look out...the future is looking bright for this talented young man.

Let's see those 22 and 25 year olds doing this in the offseason.

Nole said in his presser that it was not the “ideal atmosphere” in the stadium tonight. He also thought when the crowd was chanting “Rune!” Nole thought they were booing. Yeah, he was not pleased with the crowd tonight.

Good. It spared us from that sham of a gesture politely called a “boob thrust.”

ESPN talking heads have collectively taken up the Rodney Dangerfield, “No Respect” shtick. Do they even realize how much negativity Djokovic has drummed up for the last decade with his roid-like rage on court, ripping shirts, scaring ball kids and how it’s gotten totally out of control at RG (vs Berrettini and the stanchion attack), at last year’s USO with the ball swat and finally at the Olympics with the racquet heave and the net post assault?

Djokovic has brought this on himself and they choose to ignore the self-made demonic behavior. Nobody has ever forced the guy to vent in an antisocial manner. He chooses that form and now he should accept the negative side effects from using that anger as a self-motivating tool.
The guy has become thoroughly unlikable for many a neutral fan. The more the media and the player’s camp play the “poor pitiful me” Djokovic card the less likely anyone neutral and independent will warm to what he’s trying to achieve.

This whole buildup reminds me of when Serena was trying to close the deal in 2016. There was a sizable amount of bellyaching by Williams fans claiming racism fueled the joy expressed by people when Vinci stopped the coronation. In fact, Serena hadn’t erased in many people’s minds that horrible image of threatening a seated lineswoman considerably smaller in stature by words to the effect that she would like to jam a ball down the woman’s throat as punishment for simply doing her job. Serena was still getting rightful backlash seven years later. Same thing going on here. The more the media and Djokovic demand the Aretha word for him, the less likely his accomplishment will be appreciated.

How nasty from the crowd!
But, here TT said Nole was done when I went to bed after he lost the second set. I get up, and he won, lol!

Doesn't matter. Do you really think current Novak would outlast his younger self? He shouldn't be running circles against an entire group of 22-25 year olds.

The game being more physical than ever is only partly true. True because it's harder for teenagers to break through today than in the past, but completely false because a 34 year old is winning everything against players in their early to mid 20's.

I don't disagree entirely, just with the more physical than ever part. Current Novak wouldn't outlast his younger self. The Next Gen are just bad.
