I think you are right but emma seem more shy and not as marketable throughout the world. One other thing i worrie about is her not being white, not sure how british press and public will embrace her as their own. There are some questionable support issues in british sports for minority sporting stars in the past

Yeah, Emma cited Li vs Schiavone RG final from 2011.
She was also coached for a while by Nigel Sears. Her serve looks a little like Ivanovic's who he coached, albeit her ball toss isn't so wild.
Emma reminds me of Li Na's game crossed with Halep's margin and poise. A good fit given her lineage.
Her father is Romanian and her mother is Chinese, so this makes a lot sense

The marketability thing is dumb. They are both marketable but in different ways, as in they have different personalities. British and latin temperament are generally entirely different. That was obvious in their after match speeches even though we know a bunch of that is rehearsed.

One of the reasons I felt that Emma was going to win in two sets was precisely that Leylah had so many tough matches with top ten players all in a row. No matter how old a player is that does have an impact this late in the tournament.

Emma was the favourite on form for sure, and she played like it. That’s not easy to do, especially at her age. And yes I thought LAF was a bit tired. Her serving was weak in the SF and F. Usually a cue that you’ve lost a bit of endurance, but maybe emotionally even more than physically. Too many tough matches, but the higher seeding now for both ladies will help that problem.

Prediction - the WTA doesn't become NextGen Emma and Leylah show; they're not going to dominate - despite what they did here. Now they awake to a world of being known entities and the attendant expectations and pressures - both on and off court. I'm certain they'll have future successes - big ones - but I don't think the WTA is going to fall away and we're going to have a new Chris-Martina thing where one or both are in most Slam finals for years on end. I see more of a Barty situation for both - they'll win and/or make more finals, but that will alternate with not great Slam performances - some due to them being off, some due to just getting outplayed by good players who are playing better on a given day.

Yeah, I think this is what will happen too. Swiatek, when firing in all cylinders on clay, is spectacular. The spin she puts in her shots is wicked. If Osaka can overcome her current hardships, we know she is a pretty excellent hardcourter. Then, there's Barty, Andreescu (if she stops resembling Del Potro way too much), Kenin (if she manages to overcome her post major jitters), Sabalenka (I mean, she might be a bit one-dimensional, but when she tees off that ball and it goes in...) and so on. And the old guard might still sneak something. A truly great time seems to be beginning.

You said LoL which can also refer to League of Legends so I responded with WoW, World of Warcraft. Sorry for going meta on you. Have a pleasant evening!
Mate, my apologies. Clearly you’re a man of culture and this was a communication fluke. I don’t play LoL but have been on WoW for 16 years. Enjoy the evening too!

Not a Slam, but Serena's 2012 Olympics run is still possibly the most impressive I've seen from her. Murderous form.
Serena is underrated on here I’ve found. I could pick at least 10 matches from her that I don’t think any woman in history can beat. ‘12 Olympics up there for sure. Some might say the ‘02-03 version was even better too.

What are the rules for WTA finals participation? Is there a spot for a player who has won a GS title but doesn't finish top 8?

Of course, it's not impossible that Emma could still make the YE top 8 if she takes this form forward ...
I'm not sure how much she plans to play -- she must be exhausted.
In the race standings, I think she had 242 points coming in. Add another 2,000 and that may already put her in the Top 12 or so. But I'm guessing she won't go all in just to qualify.

Yeah but even Serena got pushed to a tiebreak. Raducanu won every set by a break advantage which is truly insane.

She lost 5 games or fewer in every set.

In qualifying, she lost 16 games in 3 matches and 6 sets
In the main draw, she lost 31 games in 7 matches and 14 sets

That's 47 game losses over 10 matches and 20 sets or 4.7 per match and 2.35 per set

Yeah, poor serving is usually a sign you're not playing with a full tank. It's hard to "hit up" when those legs are burning. I'm sure these two will have many more battles in the future.

Enjoyed that!
Very high level, very little nerves and mood swings.
Just clean amazingly high level tennis.
Auto line calling really allowing on the line rallying to the full. Take note, Aus, Wimbledon and even the French (somehow)

What a 10 match run for Emma.

I was supporting Leyla but fully congrats to Emma very well deserved.

i will be honest this is hardly believable a world number 150 qualifier winning the title but it’s happened!

Big question now is going to be at 18 how she handles being the hunted not the hunter it’s huge pressure to back this up but that is for another day.

i like the fact that Leylah Fernandez is like one of those gestalt figure–ground visual illusions: roughly half of people sees an adorable spunky kiddo and the other half sees an annoying child (ok maybe not quite half)
Using an estimation from a TT sample

Emma first to win all her matches in Qualifying and in main draw without dropping a set to the championship. History made,, bigger than novak's CYGS. but emma may face some criticism in that she didn't face any top 10 player

Nah, I prefer the analoge. 'Kin machines doin' everything nowadays. Why do we even need humans ?

We need humans to do many tasks but line calling is not one of them. The HE system is much more accurate and consistent. It also prevents momentum-sucking breaks to challenge.

You could criticize the run for that but the top 10 players were a bit of a shambles in this tournament anyway. Ash should've made it to face Emma but played a below bar match against Rogers. Better luck next time.
