actually Pliskova had quite a few such "pathetic" performances at slams in the last 3 years, wherever there was a huge opportunity for her to go all the way to take the title, she always faulted on her own.

With the women's tour I always have to hold my breath because it's never truly over until it's over - but I am feeling quite hopeful that Maria is going to win! Then all 4 of the women I wanted to see in the semis will have gotten in to them - that almost never happens!

Being happy and content - Bencic because she won the gold medal, which has now become a huge sparkly mantle concealing a career that should've perhaps been much better; Pliskova because she reached the Wimbledon final and is all smiles now in every match she plays - is a great recipe to lose against players who aren't necessarily better than you, but certainly hungrier and less "content". Case in point: Raducanu and Sakkari.

I've never thought of her as a 'smaller girl'. She's almost 5'8" and she's got a massively muscular body. That's certainly a bit below average perhaps for WTA, but it's definitely not short.
