2021 USO is going to be nutty

The main storyline remains Djokovic's attempt at completing the Grand Slam, no doubt about it, but there will be a remarkable amount of fluctuation in the rankings for the first time in ages with two majors being defended simultaneously.

Defending 2000: Nadal, Thiem
Defending 1200: Medvedev, Zverev
Defending 720: Dimitrov, Berrettini, Carreno Busta
Defending 360: Federer, Wawrinka, Monfils, Schwartzman, Shapovalov, Coric, Rublev, De Minaur
Defending 180: Djokovic, Goffin, Thompson, ADF, Tiafoe, Pospisil, FAA, Koepfer, Andujar, Cilic

This will repeat itself at the AO and RG, but we probably will never see anything like this ever again in our lifetime. The craziness of it all perhaps hasn't sunk in to people's consciousness yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

Nice hype but just another USO :)

Not Nole but the new IT calling system out to be more of a hype

The new figures at the top of male tennis such as Medvedev, Tsitsipass, Zverev and the new kids on the block such as Alcaraz, Sinner etc are to be the excitement

The difficult to figure out female tennis competion need to be the draw

COVID regulations and vaccinations mandates that some like Tsitsi or Novak refuse to embrase and others consider for controversial ougth to be the thought of the day

Let's not get fixated on one male tennis player who may choke in 3rd or 4th round of the USO this year :)

Just another USO?! Best slam of the year, with a full capacity crowd. NYC's gonna be rockin!

USopen is the slam I love the most. But it has not been the best slam of the year since 2012.
Rafa injured in 2012/2014
Roger 2013/2016/2017
Djokovic injured in 2017/2019
Andy injured in 2013/2017/2018/2019/2020
Then there was pandemic in 2020 too.

No other slam has had so many injuries to big 4. Only 4 big four matches since 2012.
2012 final
2013 final
2014 qf
2015 final
None of the 4 were best matches as well. Very underwhelming slam to say the least.

Yeah USO sucks.

I might have it wrong, but he reached the 4R in 2019, I was assuming he was defending those points.

No one seems to know the answer for sure. People keep coming up with different versions. I also assumed he kept the 180 points from 2019, but now I'm not so sure.

And yes, this slam will be nutty for sure. It's just too bad Thiem, Wawrinka, Federer and (probably) Nadal aren't participating. Especially Fedal of course. It would've been great to see 20-20-20 with all of them in the draw, ready to try 21. I really hope Djokovic isn't gonna be injured, or tested positive for covid or defaulted or anything like that. If he loses, I want it to be because someone gains the upper hand and beats him fair and square. And if he wins, I hope it'll be against Medvedev or Zverev, and not some random surprise who graciously donates him the CGS.

I like your summary mostly but I feel the pandemic is still on.

I don't doubt USO can be the greatest even without some of the biggest names in but now wonder how the Flushing Meadows plans to pack its venue without COVID consequences.

I was just looking at the points dropping again. Very, very high likelihood that Rublev jumps to #5 in the world after the USO, behind some order of Djokovic, Medvedev, Tsitsipas (chance to pass Meddy actually), and Zverev. Rublev could even jump into the top 4 if he outperforms Zverev by a large margin here and/or during Cincinnati. If Nadal is a no-show, he'll very likely drop from 4th to 6th, Thiem will almost certainly drop from #6 to #8, small possibility of dropping to #9. Federer from #9 to #10 or #11 is possible, nothing certain though.

Too much credit to Rublev and his ranking points. Meddy, Tsitsi and Zverev are about to soar up there. Perhaps, they are the new "Big Three" coming.

Well, I'm not trying to give him credit (he deserves some for his ATP 500 performances, though), just trying to report what's going to actually happen in the next 4-5 weeks.

Yeah, so am I. Meddy, Tsitsi and Zverev, in my view (and calculations) are what's gona happen in those few weeks.
