No problem but I just believe 34 year old Federer was better than 34 year old Djokovic that we witness now. Djokovic benefits from the age advantage, it's obvious unless you are a die hard Djokovic fan.

34 year old Federer had chances and blew it with the competition.

IF, IF, IF....doesn't exist.
Everything has a ripple effect. You can't change one thing and keep everything else constant. Novak couldve raised his level if Rog or Nadal were on the other side.

Unless you change only the last item in the time/space continuum. :)

It would have certainly added to the tournament in a big way if Rafa Nadal had played.....I'm guessing he would have been in the bottom half of the draw, but we'll never know for sure.

From what I saw, Djokovic ended up taking out the other two men who were playing the best in the draw - Shapovalov and Berrettini. I would have liked to have seen a Medvedev/Berrettini match - that would have had some spice to it. Tsitsipas and Zverev were disappointments, IMO.......liked what I saw from Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The gap is closing ever so slightly, but there is still a huge mental obstacle to be scaled.........someone will do it.......just don't know when or who it will be.

Enjoyed the two weeks, ladies and gentlemen......

Anyone else sad that Novak’s wife, kids and parents were not able to see him get to 20 Slam titles with his sixth Wimbledon win today?

On to the attempt at the Grand Slam. I think that is great for the sport. This is something most of us here have never seen attempted. I for one am looking forward to this.If Novak wins the US Open he will have earned it. It's going to be much harder than this Wimbledon title. As a matter of fact, I have a feeling he won't win it. In this day and age of media there is simply a ton of pressure and never ending mentioning of it that can wear the strongest down
Djokovic will probably have the major competitors in the U.S. Open: Nadal, Wawrinka, Thiem, Raonic, among many others.

Federer at 34 had to deal with Djokovic at 28 and Nadal at 29. Djokovic has grandpa Fed and about same age Nadal. Big difference, career inflation era. That's all.

No, you are right. I've been complaining about his level all tournament after Anderson match, where he appeared to peak (also no wind, roof closed, low ranked player, and poor mover in Anderson). The only point that impressed me was the one that got him the break point in the 4th set, 3-3. His poor BP conversion rate and penchancy to choke serving for sets or matches is becoming troublesome. I have several examples of the latter but the most recent and egregious ones were 3rd set TBD 5-4 serving vs Berry QF of FO, 3rd set vs Nadal 5-4, 30-0 at SF of FO, 5-4 40-30 third set vs Sissy FO '20, and Wimbledon '21 1st set 5-3 vs Berry.

He won Wimbledon with a far lower level than what he showed at latter stages of AO and FO. I'm not optimistic about USO but I'm just glad he got this one.

Edit: the more you gift sets to these young guys, the more belief you give them that they can hang. That's the thing I really respect about Nadal. He steps on your throat when you're down.
I agree. I think it’s down to fatigue a bit. Novak has been playing non stop since Rome to here. That’s why doing the french-Wimbledon double was always gonna be tough. As well as moving to different surfaces very quickly. The channel slam is one of the hardest achievements in men’s tennis especially with only 2 weeks between then this year.

He will probably be more rested and fresh for the us open later this year. He definitely needs a rest now but he’s the ultimate warrior and despite not his best level he still found a way.

I feel the competition will be tough but Novak will be fresher and play better coming in. He was clearly tiring after a long slog of matches since Rome. It would be brutal on anyone and he needs a rest now. Especially on two weeks between french and Wimbledon and adapting to different surfaces with only weeks rest.

I feel for us open he’ll be more fresh entering as he won’t play much before it. Of course he might still got to the olympics in 2 weeks but we will see. It’s only best of 3 and after he can rest till us open which is 4-5 weeks after it.

He doesn’t need to play rogers cup or cincy this year. We will see.

One thing about Novak, he plays just well enough to win. He is top of the heap, Nadal is on his way out, and sorry to say Federer has other interest. Been a great 15 years for all 3. They have set the mark, and should all be congratulated for what they accomplished. Time for the new guys to establish the next peck order. For now Novak is the best and fittest, couple more years and it will be his turn to step aside.

Djokovic had a big problem with the slippery grass and therefore his movement was cautious and limited. He did not want to experience the fate of Manarino and Serena Williams. Victory is victory, not even big teams in football, Bayern, Real, etc., play great every time when they win.
Yeah Djokovic was very hesitant with his footwork and movement this year. Definitely looked like he was holding back at times for fear of hurting himself.

Wouldn't you be nervous if we didn't see him for a month though? I know hard court are his best surface, but his first time back from AO he lost to Dan Evans  . I think the month off is what will happen if he goes to the Olympics, though. I will be nervous as always. No matter how good you are, you still need time to adjust to match play on a new surface.

Yeah, Novak’s been donating sets with low level for a while now. Really since the 2019 Wimbledon final. At some point you’d think that would come back and bite him in the ass, but it really hasn’t. On the other hand, we all know he can play better than he did today. And if he’s winning despite playing tight and at times rather poor, then he’s really going to be winning when he finally loosens up (when he finally gets the slam record?). So on the whole I think it’s not really a bad sign for Novak.

Yes, I don’t care about the other stuff. I need GOAT‘s to win with an attacking style, not what Djokovic did today, keeping it in play to let the attacking player choke. Not all about stats for me. That’s ok with you, right?

All that said, amazing achievement by Novak today. If he claims the USO he will be the most successful player there’s ever been in slams. That’s what I know.
GOAT to win, not GOAT's to win. Nobody cares about what your care or don't care about, it was a rhetorical question.

True point. Yeah make an excellent comment there. It’s very difficult tricky situation for Novak and his team to work. They have been spot on with the schedule so far though so I trust them to get it right again. As he needs to stay match hard but at same time needs to avoid burnout and mental and physical fatigue. Great comment my friend.

I will be nervous but at same time I’m more than happy with what he’s achieved already this year. It’s out of this world. He will have his chances to get more but anything else this year is the cherry on the top now. Novak though is so mentally strong and such a winner he will be going for more success no doubt.

Djokovic went to the net 48 times today and won 71% of those points, which was 9 more net approaches than Berrettini. That is considered attacking tennis. Just because he is not blasting 105 mph forehands on every other shot does not mean he wasn't attacking. For one thing, he has way more pressure and his forehand was misfiring today so why should start blasting forehands where he would be missing and make a ton of errors just so he can be considered by you to be playing "an attacking style"? I really don't think a lot of you understand the game.
Its the type of people who think attacking style is when you blast a football from 30 yards in hope of something while the end result is ball ends up in the stands.

He might not have been as passive as the Shapo match, but that would have been tough. Berrettini had strong points today but let’s not pretend he played great. He missed his fair share of first serves too, especially in the big moments. A lot of Berr’s errors today were not forced by Novak‘s aggression, in my opinion.

I’m sure we can both listen to alternative opinions and learn more about the game can’t we?

Anyway, congrats again to Novak and his fans on an excellent achievement.
If i saw this stat right, and totals compute
Djokovic 26 open play winners(plus 5 aces) 21 UE 53 forced errors =145 points won
Berettini 41 open play winners(plus 16 aces) 48 UE 66 forced errors = 131 points won

So Djokovic forced Berettini into 13 more errors despite non existant 1-2 serve plus 1 combo throughout the match.
Once rallies became neutral stats indicate Djokovic was the more offensive one.

It would be interesting to see how many serve plus 1 winners and forced errors Mateo drew, and how many UE he had in those situations. Felt like he could have done even better there.

Something about the rules of coronavirus.... Not sure why today though, as the stadium was full. Maybe no kids as they are not vaccainted?

Congrats Djokovic! (I can sleep well now :D )

Matteo played really well today. If it were not Novak on the other side of the net, he would have won.
You have to play the guy on the other side of the net. No matter how well Matteo played, and I don’t think he played as well as he can, he didn’t beat that guy. A loss is a loss.

Open play winners are, generally speaking, the shot I like to see. If a guy is “goating” I would want to see them hit more winners.
But I accept that’s totally subjective. Djokovic clearly the better tennis player today, not denying that. He won while playing within himself, cutting out errors. By definition, taking less risk.

maybe djokovic would have won anyway, but nadal would have made djokovic earn it by forcing djoker to go for his shots.
Today, he was waiting for Berettini's mistakes most of the match.
Isn't that the way to beat these young guys? Just be consistent and defend and let them implode? Shapo and Berrettini couldn't even hit the most routine shots. Just under pressure to go for too much. Djokovic in cruise control for most of it and only upping his game on big points.

ALL you Pushers out there in USTA leagues,, Rejoice,,,, YOu can push the ball and still tie the GOAT with 20 majors

Sounds as though you are struggling to accept that novak is just that bit better than Roger when it comes down to it. Novak is mentally tougher and clutch and makes far fewer errors in the key moments compared to Roger.

The frightening thing is that Novak is still able to win comfortably against some really dangerous players when he looks as though he is just in 3rd gear most of the time.

He is the most complete tennis player i have ever seen and he doesn't have any noticeable weaknesses for an opponent to attack.

His first serve is good, his Returns are probably best of all time. His forehand and backhand are incredibly solid as are his groundstrokes. He is also one of fastest and fittest players around as well as having the most amazing flexibility and he mentally has become giant in clutch moments.

He is not unbeatable as no one is but even when he is playing mediocre he still is so tough to beat. He can win matches when he is playing well below his best which Roger could never do as well. Even Rafa usually doesn't pull off as many wins when he is playing subpar.

Congratulations to Djokovic on yet another Wimbledon and a record tying 20th Slam trophy. It never stops being amazing how strong he is in most important moments, and the fact that he always keeps coming back after any disappointment. This year being the best example. After the extended break, unfortunate disqualification and Nadal in the French Open final looked to have really stopped his momentum, he came back in incredible fashion, winning three Slams this year with one still left to play.

And honestly, if Rafa can't win the upcoming US Open, I would love to see Novak do it. Calendar Slam is an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime. I was born in the year when it happened last time on the men's Tour, and nobody came close to matching Laver's accomplishment until now. Whether Djokovic does it or not, I'll just say that I am glad he's come so far. Called him an underappreciated champion a lot of times but I am saying it less and less these days. He will never be the majority favorite but he is finally gaining massive respect. And it was about time...

I mean, he is probably the most complete baseliner, but not the most complete player.

At the moment he has weaknesses, it's just that the other guys have even more glaring ones.

Berrettini has actually done better than all but 1 of the 5 other maiden Wimbledon finalists of the last 11 years.

Straight set losses:

2010 Berdych
2016 Raonic
2017 Cilic
2018 Anderson

4 set losses:

2012 Murray
2021 Berrettini

And Murray went on to win 2 Wimbledon titles. Good omen?

Congrats to Djokovic blnt Berrettini No 20 Slams and 3 in same Calendar year-He is chasing Rod Laver( 1962-Amateur and 1969-Pro) and Don Budge(1938) to win all 4 slams in the same calendar year, Men's Tour. Berrettini has no problem with his performance picking up 1700 ATP ranking Points--500 and Title at Queens and 1200 for Finals 2nd place at SW19-less of course prior year or so points, Grass Court Season has been excellent for Matteo.. Get Busy

Cheers
