Interesting first round match (would create a thread for Djokovic but his match looks very straight forward so not much point). Federer coming off a 4th round withdrawal at RG and a poor showing at Halle where he lost in the 2nd round to FAA in 3 sets. Federer leads the H2H 6-0 with 2 meetings at Wimbledon, both won by him in straight sets. Last meeting was in 2018.

What do you think? Poll included.

Federer is going to carve him up. I expect Federer to really bring it here at Wimbledon.

Me, too! He will not hold back, or at least that's what I felt at times during RG, and he will give everything he has on the court. Whether that's enough or not is another thing and time will answer that.

I seriously wouldn't underestimate Federer. After the way he played and gutted out those wins at RG, he's shown to me that when it comes to best of five, it is still very difficult to get past him, and this is grass, where he is the GOAT. I think he is going to pick up steam very quickly here.

Me too! Really waiting for tomorrow

If I didn't know you better I'd suggest you were trying to jinx him, lol. He'll probably win, but "carving up" anyone seems a bit much for our old man.

Mannarino has played all three weeks of the grass season, starting slowly but turning up the volume at Mallorca by beating Struff, an injured Thiem and FeLo. This will help him early vs rusty fedr but form will eventually hold firm. fedr in straight sets, the first two close and then an easy one.

I hope you are right! Mannarino can play well on the grass, but normally he should be exactly the player whom roger likes to play. They have played plenty of times, with Mannarino winning just the one set in 2017 Basel, and Mannarino himself isn't that young anymore in tennis terms - 31, which used to be for players on the way to retirement. But at Roger's age, and coming back from surgery with a lack of match play, I won't take any match for granted anymore.

Hopefully Fed will come through in straight sets and, crucially, without expending too much energy.

I am team MedFed for this WB , but Federer fans should be praying that Federer doesn't slip on the grass, Djokovic-Draper don't move as well as him on it, but then he hardly been move as well as he used to.

He needs to be uber careful while on the stretch. If he fell, it might not do well for his knees.

Good thing he is in the other half.

Tricky opponent. I just hope Fed gets through without too much fuss.

Oh c'mon, Krish!

There is nothing tricky about Mannarino and Sugita/ Gasket.

Finally, I can enjoy the Picasso of grass court tennis luminating his masterpiece without having to worry about the opponents.

Once Federer's footwork calculates the mannerism of Mannarino's groundstrokes, it will be a sight to behold on this neo, slightly notorious yet magical grass.

Fair enough. I guess Federer will be troubled in later rounds. If he is troubled here, would it be a really bad sign for his tournament and future career?
Yes it would be a bad sign. He already said that after Halle he went home to Switzerland to discuss with his team and to try not to make “silly decisions” If he goes out early in two of his pet tournaments and still has to face the hard court season with Basel out of the picture, the writing is on the wall and I just don’t see him continuing beyond perhaps Laver Cup. Like I said before, his records are falling like dominos. He lost a lot of grand slams he should have won; we all know that. I will always love watching him on YouTube but it’s entirely possible, perhaps even probable that he will finish 3rd in the all time great race if it is based solely on Grand Slams.

Fair enough. In normal times, a younger generation would be there to stop his records being broken, but it seems like that will not happen. Also are you girl?

yes I am. It’s fairly obvious that the younger generation don’t currently have what it takes. Easy to criticize Tsitsipas after today’s result, but he’s only 22 and still has time to work on things. The guys who are older; Medvedev, Thiem, etc have been very disappointing to me. Thiem won one slam but had Djokovic not been defaulted, who would have bet against him?

Oh right, think you're the first girl I spoke to on here. So why do you think the younger generation fail so badly? (by younger, I mean anyone Thiem's age or younger)

I’m not making a prediction here, nothing to go on. Should be Fed in three based on history, but I’m not sure he’ll turn up in any kind of form and if not Mannarino could get it done in 4 or 5.

I have no real expectations for Fed here.

What are people smoking tbh? Did anyone actually see the guy in Halle?

Mannarino is a capable grass courter of lower level, would be a very easy R3-R4 but for a Federer totally out of practice he ain't that easy in R1.

This can easily turn into 4-5 setter for Federer

I see him winning but if his problems flare up it won't be easy.

I've strong feeling that Fed will come out zoning. His level will surprise everyone. May give false hopes to some.
I sure hope you’re right, but the last time Fed zoned was the first 30 minutes of the 2019 AO semi against Djokovic. That’s 2.5 years ago, a long time in tennis.

More likely the case because of his opponent. The first decent opponent Fed faces and he will struggle in my opinion.

He’ll beat the mugs most likely. As soon as he faces a player though who can rally with him, serve well, return decent and move ok he will be in trouble.

Jusy like felix did in Halle and we seen the doubts Fed had with his timing on strokes, movement, stamina and mental problems. I doubt that changes in under 2 weeks.
