Federer was a bit unlucky that Mannarino didn't try to play the 5th Set, because if Mannarino conceded a bagel in the 5th Set it would help Federer's confidence.

True but he was clearly the better player in the fourth set. We don’t know what would have happened in a 5th set but Federer did play better in that fourth set.

I think it would've been better for his mindset going forward to get the win in the 5th.

I know he was the better player. Just unlucky.

Mannarino was up on the cards and Federer knew he needed a stoppage to win, and somehow he found the knockout blow

It was a disappointing way for the match to finish but I often think if your opponent pushes you hard enough or outsmarts you in a way that makes you slip or fall over in the first place then that's a credit to them rather than luck being the deciding factor.
It's 100% luck mate this is a sad moment to go lick bum.

"...after his opponent almost died on the court."

Mannarino managed that match badly in general. I feel bad for him, but I suspect he would have choked or made some big mistakes in the 5th.

Yeah, it was totally out of place and time imo. Strange post match interview for a match that finished with retirement due to a player's injury.

They also never used to do on-court interviews here, you would always walk off the court and someone would grab you in the hallway
Very different approach this year

not the trolls here making a fuss post match interview, i dont like it either but what do you want, for fed to cry?? also he was responding appropiately depending on the question, he definitely felt bad that it ended like that.
It would have just sufficed that Fed wasn’t making jokes cheerfully.

Imagine how relieved Federer must be. That's why I think the interview went the way it did. He could have been out of Wimbledon in round 1 with egg on his face after the RG debacle. Now he has a win and Gasquet or Sugita in r2 :-D :-D :-D

More time to setup his shots, doesn't have to bend those knees, seems like it at the moment.

from your watch, do you think that is the biggest thing with fed in his recent matches, playing gingerly so he doesn have to apply as much pressure on his knees? ialso wondered how much he didnt want to risk falling given what we saw with mannarino.

Yeah lets spend the entire year on not slipping on the lottery surface anyway. I guess DJoko has atrocious footwork as well as he fell over about 19 times yesterday.
That's just the way the grass plays in the opening few days, it's not like the players aren't aware of it.

Ehhhh, how much did Federer really make him slip there?

This is far more luck based and not something you can just account for.

Some humility, or even a fake remorse, something or anything other than acting like a standup comedian would have been nice. ;)

If it was any other surface other than grass, Mannarino would not have slipped and injured himself. So yes, there is definitely luck involved.

Fed can see this as a fresh start to the tournament. Do a factory reset, go out against Gasquet and pretend he's playing his first match.

Well, I bet this won't be the last injury we see thus tournament. The grass is incredibly slippery this year and players are falling all over the place. Every match I've seen so far there has been a bad fall. It's clearly dangerous and all it takes is to get stuck like Mannarino did and not only is your tournament over but your season is over. Mannarino most likely suffered a cruciate ligament injury. All these falls can't be due to bad movement, it's to the point of it being out of your control now.
