Both X. Wangs are in this one. Xinyu is scheduled to play Martincova in R1, and Xiyu will be playing Louisa Chirico in the final qualie round.

You should ask the mods to merge this with San Jose, individual small WTA threads rarely work.

In U.K. watching Edmund v Watanuki on Prime; there’s about a dozen spectators and most of them are the players entourages. Midday heat must be a factor and most will be at work. Obviously it picks up in the evening and later rounds and bigger stars but do these tournaments turn a profit?

Halep in a WTA match is the outlier in marquee names playing today. Most savvy potential attendees would have reviewed the OoP before buying a ticket to watch bottom feeders on a hot summer day in a malarial swamp.

Evening crowds are usually closer to capacity. I remember the Murray vs Copil match a few years back; it was packed like sardines!

I may be the only curious one but Emma Rads and Clara Tauson are playing dubs against Niculescu and Hradacka. It looked like Emma and Tauson were going to get bageled at 0-4 but now the young ladies are serving 4-5 in 1st set.

Decent crowd for Murray battling Ymer and the heat, about half full.

Why is there an ad banner in the background for Har-tru (the clay surface) at an event that’s on hard courts?

also, this is the first time I’ve even seen any ad banner for Har-tru, I thought it was just a style of clay, not a company or anything.

All Har Tru is mined outside Charlottesville VA, not too far from Citi.

So basically this is the company's “home tournament “

Plus they make plenty of things for tennis courts, not just the green clay.

Elise Mertens really underperforming this year at tournaments that aren't slams.

Her recent results:
1R loss Washington - Samsonova
1R loss Prague - Linette
4R loss Wimbledon - Jabeur
1st match loss Eastbourne - Flipkens
1R loss Birmginham - McNally
2R loss Hertogenbosch - Van Uytvanck
4R loss French Open - Gauff
QF loss Strasbourg - Juvan
1R loss Istanbul - Peterson
1st match loss Miami - Fruhvirtova
3R loss Indian Wells - Saville

Has lost her last 5 matches outside of slams and gone 5-9 in her last 9 tournaments outside of slams. But gone 6-2 at the two slams making back to back second weeks. Odd.

Will be watching Tauson and Petkovic since I have Tauson in this one. Hasn't been a great year for her with injuries, but odds too good to pass up. Moved all the way from -110 to like -180/-190.

We will see how things go though.

Tomljanovic beat Stephens 1&4. Alja failed to serve out the match at 5-2 but she didn't make mistake the second time.

Kenin dodged a bagel but got a breadstick. Osorio broke Kenin's serve 3 times in a row in the second set to serve for the match at 5-0 but Kenin was able to break the serve. Osorio broke right back to win the match 6&1.

Emma is not as aggressive as she was at last year USO and still has a lot of work to do with her fitness... She may get past Osorio next but will have issues with the power from either Tomljanovic or Samsonova the following round.

The stupidity of WTA players is just mind boggling. Anisimova, clearly the more talented and better player just trying to slap and hit through Pliskova who moves like a cow on ice. Instead of throwing in a drop shot here and there and some shots with a nice angle...but no, she just slapping the ball until she shanks it wide or into the net.

Equal pay my ass, they don't deserve 1/10 of what the ATP players make

Mid 90s (F) in DC? With her style of play, you’d think that Simona would have opted for the cooler venue in San Jose. Still hot here but 10+ degrees cooler

I always thought medical timeout treatment was done by player's personal medical pro's.
I see the same med pro treating K-sky and Halep.

Simona the quitter strikes yet again.
With her tenacious, aggressive counter-puncher style of play, she's ended up in the hospital a couple of times suffering from heat exhaustion, I believe. Once after an AO final against C Woz and again in DC a few years ago IIRC

Probably 40% heat, 60% outclassed

Yes, in that that e.g., Simona's FH is not quite up-to-date in terms of acceleration in comparison to the ones of some of the younger girls, which are closer to the ATP FH. Same on serve.

However, let's give her a break at such temperatures
