Gstaad has a fast clay, and it's in altitude, kind of like Madrid. I think it'll help Berrettini's game. He will extend his winning streak to 15.

No Wawrinka??
He was given a WC but has given it back, citing a need for more practice/off-court preparation.

He had really looked rusty since Rome, the only time he managed to win two matches in a row since his return. He’s probably taking a smarter route to being competitive in NA on HC by doing this.

Swiss or not, he hasn’t played Gstaad since 2013. It’s on clay and it doesn’t really offer great prep for being ready in Canada and beyond.

Kopriva likes Gstaad. He qualified there last year and made it to the SFs with an upset of Shapo and followed that up with a double bakery session on Ymer the Younger’s account before Ruud ended his dream run rather rudely. Now he has started the qualifying with a 1&2 rout of a young Austrian with no ranking.

To keep a second run going he will need to step it up vs former top 40 Chilean Nicholas Jarry. His road back from a doping ban has been rather bumpy with just one ATP Tour match win in 2021-22.

Delbonis had little trouble with Ymer the Younger, 4&5. The ugliest service motion since Jay Berger will be on display for at least one more match vs the winner of Gaston vs Thiem.

Lehecka has started strong vs Etcheverry, 5-1. This reverses their Challenger contest in Santiago (4&3) in March.

It has been a bit of a struggle for the Czech since his dream Rotterdam run to the SFs, losing 1R in 6 of 7 ATP level tournaments.

Lehecka advances 1&3; fellow Czech Kopriva cannot duplicate his 2021 run without some LL action after he falls to Jarry 4&4 in the qualies.

Swiss WC Ritschard takes out the Sousagroan 3&3.

Ymer the Elder gets in main draw. Will he go deeper than his brother? He has a very pairelous task in 1R.

Thankfully Gaston is lefty and Domi is righty so picking out who is who in the matching Adidas kits is easy. They were Bobsey twins on the scoreboard with the matching breadsticks. 5-6 on serve third set now.

Could we have a Paire of retirements by Benoit? He quit at 2-6 0-2 today. Could he also just plain retire? Obviously his head is not into being a legitimate player on tour.

Important win for Thiem considering Gaston took him to five sets at RG in 2020 when he was lowly ranked and Dom was at the top. Psychologically it’s another confidence booster.

I was checking today scores, and the match that Nicolás Jarry won over Thiago Monteiro caught my attention because of its stats.
  • Jarry won the 3 tiebreaker match 6-7(9-11) 7-6(7-4) 7-6(8-6)
  • There were no break points converted during all the match. Monteiro had none, but Jarry could not convert any of the 11 he had.
  • Jarry squandered 5 set points in the first set tiebreaker, before Monteiro could convert his second SP.
  • In the 3rd set tiebreaker, Monteiro had one MP on Jarry’s serve at 5-6. Jarry could win the match after his only MP with Monteiro serving at 6-7.
  • Jarry hit 37 aces and 1 DF. Monteiro had 9 aces and no DF.
  • Match duration: 3 hours and 11 minutes.
Jarry will play Y. Hanfmann in the next round, who beat the former’s countryman Garín in straight sets.

If Timmie can remove the world’s ugliest service motion in 2R there is a chance to get a second win in a row after his upset of RBA in Bastad. That would be a great sign he’s getting back.

Ruud looks too edgy. I think the expectation to do well after being an FO finalist is bothering him. Facing multiple break points in this first game.

What is that continual noise in the background, like an aircraft flying overhead, except it’s constant. Really irritating.

Great to see Thiem notch up another win today against Delbonis. (y)

A 250 is to Casper Ruud what a pic-a-nik basket is to Yogi Bear -- in danger of being stolen:

Jarry continues to play only tiebreak matches. Today he beat Hanfmann in straight sets 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-2).
Another match with no service breaks. Jarry won his second consecutive match not having a break point in all the match. His opponent just got 2 he couldn’t convert in the third game of the first set.
Jarry meets Albert Ramos Viñolas next match.

Berry continued his unbeaten streak in Gstaad, having never even lost a set in the Swiss mountain paradise.

On Friday in the QF will Pedro Martinez once more have to answer the famous question, “Who’s your daddy?”

I'm still baffled that the umpire speaks French instead of German !

Can someone explain ????

In Gstaad, for example, the locals speak „Berndütsch“, as is common in the Bernese Oberland. When speaking with foreigners many Swiss automatically switch to Swiss High German, so that they are not at all hard to understand.

In order to be able to live in Gstaad and communicate with locals and guests alike you should have a good command of German. In addition you should also speak English and French.

German is the official language of Gstaad, but many of its 9,000 residents also speak fluent English.

Berry looks like he may have ODed at the dinner table last night. Totally listless. No movement.

His win streaks overall and at Gstaad are in serious jeopardy.
