The event that gave us a series of classic clay matches back in the 00s, was first shoved ungratefully into the post-Wimbledon clay swing back in 2009. Still, the weather, the history, and the timing make this, imo, a fascinating event and a points grab for ambitious young clay dogs.

Here are the top 8 players (from https://live-tennis.eu/en/atp-schedule):

1. Carlos Alcaraz
2. Andrey Rublev
3. Jannik Sinner
4. Diego Schwartzman
5. Pablo Carreno-Busta
6. Botic van de Zandschulp
7. Nikoloz Basilashvili
8. Karen Khachanov

Sinner has pulled out of Hamburg citing an ankle injury sustained during the Djokovic match at Wimbledon. He plans on returning at the Umag 250 event - a tournament owned by the same company that manages his image and business interests - before heading to North America for the hard court season.

That's not good. The kid is playing so well, but now faces yet another injury.

I was hoping his new trainer could help minimize the injuries, but I know it will take some time even for the best trainer.

I dont think its the trainer in this case, he literally fell really badly in that Djokovic match which was a bit unfortunate, but im sure there are good things in store. I just dont want him to miss out qualifying for Turin again

Yes, I recall, but his leg/knees/feet have let him down a few times this year. They do appear to be separate issues, but I imagine his new trainer can minimize many of these problems after they spend more time working together.

If he can get a win in Cincinatti/Canada which i really believe he can do well in (and yes win it) he can put himself in a golden place for Turin

Obviously I am rooting for Carlos. Sebastien Baez is playing really well right now, that could potentially be an interesting matchup if it happens. Rooting for my Carlitos of course! (: (: (: (:

Baez had a break point to go up 6-5 in the first set, but Cerundolo saves it with a first serve. This is the 7th deuce of this game. A repeat, and we are at the 8th deuce.

Cerundolo closes out the game on his second try. Why is the ATP website calling this a set point?

This will be a big test for Alcaraz. Can he continue the success from the beginning of the year? Are we in for another treat by the young Spaniard? We shall see....

Top half looks quite a bit deeper than the bottom. At least Alcaraz gets a “tune-up” match before potentially facing a very tough out in 2R vs Bastad runner up Baez.

Alcaraz will hit a few balls vs Kuhn, the Austrian-born, Spanish raised German WC, once regarded by some of his teen peers a few years back as top shelf. Kuhn won a fairly deep draw Challenger at age 17 (beat Fucsovics, Kovalik, Berlocq) from qualies but suffered a bad ankle sprain in 2018 that sent him to the bench for two months and slowed down his development. Our board favorite Miomir Cakeman told me he thought Kuhn was going to be best of that mini-era of players born ‘99-‘01.

Obviously I am hoping Carlos plays well but it's not the end of the world for him if it takes him more time to win with greater consistency. Still, I will be rooting for him 100% of course! (:

Just saw some footage of Alcaraz practising in Hamburg and I’m sure his quads look even bigger than ever!

Despite being seeded #5, BvdZ was the slight underdog vs ADF. It turned out to be an accurate assessment, maybe even too conservative. Decent match.

ADF now looks to be top 3 of the weaker bottom half with Rublev and Bastad champ Cerundolo, even with 2x Hamburg champion Basilashvili floating down there.

Musetti missed a sitter ohbh swinging volley into the net at 4-4 30-all that will haunt him if he loses this set and/or match. He already coughed up a break lead when broken back at 4-2.

If you like the ohbh then watch this match with Lajovic.

Oh, the quirky internationalism of men’s tennis: a Serbian pro plays in tennis clothing featuring the symbolic kangaroo of Oz but made by an Italian sportswear company.

Australian Brand apparel is apparently marketed across Europe but TW here and in Australia do not carry the line.

The Moose returns the favor to Lajovic by taking the second set TB 7-4.

Loads of touch on display by both but Dusan’s downfall in the second was the Djokosmash he has mastered.

The Moose is loose now, breaking Lajovic immediately and consolidating to now lead 4-1, one break. Saving MP twice in two different service games in that second set may have been his inspiration.

The Moose closes with a s&v play on MP after fighting off two BPs earlier in the game, 6-7(4) 7-6(4) 6-3. He plays 2R vs The FINNISH Emil or Dark Helmet Diego.

Young Max Hans Rehberg, 18, is up a break against Kovalik. How far can Max go?

Considering I picked Kovalik in the sudden death game, you can pretty much pencil in Max for the win. And that's how far he will go.

But yeah, watched a few games and he looks interesting. Not very tall but he can smack the serve pretty hard and has some good pop on his forehand. Kovalik looking truly dismal though, should be interesting to see him against a "real" opponent like ADF.

EDIT: I stand corrected, the backhand has its moments too. Just saw him crack a few absolute lasers, very flat and penetrating.

Lol, your anti-jinx worked - Max is down a break in the third :p

Max has had his Icarus moment. He got too close to the sun at 6-3 4-2 and has now lost 8 of the next 9 games. Daedalus weeps.

LOL the lengths we go... but seriously, watched 20 minutes and the kid was absolutely slaying - gonna have to keep an eye on him. Happy for Marian Vajda's son in law though, he deserved a decent pay day.

Yes, couldn't watch the match today and sad to see it end with 6-1 in the third, but I have seen him on the Challenger tour. Color me impressed.

If I’m hearing this correctly, German scoring is a bit different but easy to assimilate:

Love is null. Deuce is einstand. Tie scores are not all but beider, meaning both. Advantage is vorteil. All the numbered scores (15, 30, 40) are straightforward translations funfzehn, dreissig, vierzig

Despite gaining two separate MPs on Khachanov’s serve at 5-6, Struff is not able to close it out and then flames out in the TB 2-7 with a DF and a couple of volley errors.

Yes, me as a native german speaker can award stringertom with his certificate.

Only unforced error you made was 'beider', which is 'beide'. As in '15 beide'. :D
