Confused - in looking at the draw more closely wouldn't Djokovic and Alcaraz meet in the round of 16 if they both made it that far?

Looks to me like Carlos would meet either Korda or van de Zandschulp in the second round; Fritz/Cilic/Tsonga or Catarina in the third round - and then his round of 16 opponent would be Djokovic/ADF, Giron, Goffin, Evans, RBA or a qualifier? Or have I gotten the round of 16 mixed up???
Alcaraz would play Djokovic in the 4th round, but in a 56-draw tournament such as MC, the 4th round is the QF.

The Quarter Finals is the round of 16

You are such a sweetheart honestly.

Not every tournament has the same amount of rounds, so in this case the R3 is the R16.

How old are you though?

I have no idea who Lucas Catarina is? He will playing Taylor Fritz in the first round...

Got it about the 4th round being the QF due to the number of participants! Thanks! (:

Alcaraz is seeded 8, due to withdrawals

If Korda plays Alcaraz, I just hope Sebi doesn't throw in the towel.

Losing is fine, as long as he shows some spunk.

In the qualifying draw:

Radu, Radu vs Holger Rune. They've split their previous two matches.

No Kecmanovic... :cautious: He should strike while the iron is hot.

Outstanding draw if you dislike Alcaraz/Djokovic as much as I do, at least one of them won't make the SF :D

When you dislike a player, you fear the Worst Case Scenario.
What is the Worst Case Scenario? Alcaraz beats Korda.
And what is the solution to that Worst Case Scenario? Djokovic beats Alcaraz, or Alcaraz beats Djokovic..... because I dislike them both equally.
So if Korda loses, my consolation prize is that at least ONE of the TWO players I dislike the most also loses.
And I said Korda has more potential than Alcaraz, not that he's currently better than Alcaraz (although Korda came a lot closer to beating Nadal).

Wow, did Alcaraz hit some lady with a ball already? :cautious:

Can't believe I missed that.

LOL…QFs by definition is the round with 4 matches with eight players or R8. In a 64-draw (56 with 8 byes), the R16 (called that because of sixteen players) is 3R.
Yes you’re right, I was just pointing out that what @Vamos Rafa Nadal seemed to be getting confused about was over Djokovic meeting Alcaraz in the round of 16 rather than the ‘quarters‘ as they put it. When in fact they are effectively the same round in this tournament.

But they aren't. 3rd round = round of 16, 4th round = quarterfinals in a draw such as MC.

Alcaraz Djoko would play in R4/QF
This is becoming as confusing as why it’s not 45 in point scoring instead of 40 that follows 15 and 30. Shorthand is the source of the chaos in both cases. Blame it on those lazy Victorians for not being willing to add a syllable for that third point won or lost by a player within a single game. Now GenAcronym has chaos over the unwillingness to use “st”, “nd”, “rd”,”th” and “of” when delineating the stages of a tournament.

The confusion seeps in when it’s referred to as R4. If the “R” is used first it should be referring to the number of players remaining in the draw. it actually is Round of 8 or 4R this week (both rarely used) or QF. At slams and our recent super M1Ks, it should be 4R or R16, not R4.

We all use shorthand and eliminate the consonants between the number and the cap R for 1R, 2R and 3R, what should be the most commonly used proper way to describe the three earliest rounds in a tournament. The other less used but accurate terms are R128, R64, and R32. That is shorthand for Round of 128, Round of 64 and Round of 32, meaning the total amount of remaining players/byes in the draw.

I blame commentators, who often say round 1, IIRC. "Sinner will face Coric in round 1...."

Not really.

And Med is indeed great on grass.

If you think Hurkacz is great on grass, then Med is definitely great on grass.

I don't even think Hubie is great on grass courts, but he's pretty good. Med is a better player overall, but he's not better on grass than Hurkacz.

His best win on clay is probably Schwartzman in Madrid. And he beat Med on clay. Is Med great on clay, too?

M-C chooses the oddest scheduling of the M1Ks with four main draw matches on Sunday mixed into the program with the seven remaining qualifying matches.

It's starting in a bit less than 2 1/2 hours...

Schedule for tonight (AEST) :

I don't quite follow the 2nd paragraph, tbh. who beat Schwartzman in Madrid?

Med is not great on clay, no. But if he makes a 2nd RG QF? What would you call that?

Med has been better on grass than Hurkacz for every single year now.

He was one match interruption away from becoming WB champion last year.

Davidovich Fokina is the first player without a bye through to the second round.

Happy to see Sebastien Baez got through his qualifying match!

Karatsev's best win on clay is against Schwartzman in Madrid.

If Med makes a second QF, I will wonder what his draw looked like. Still, it would be a great result, a tribute to his tenacity. Not ready to call him a clay dog yet.

Don't be ridiculous. He wasn't beating Berrettini and Djokovic on grass. Not last year.

Also, in 2020, Hurkacz lost to Djokovic at Wimbledon. Medvedev lost to clay dog Goffin.

I do think so.

Especially Djokovic.

Djokovic was much worse than at US Open and played the worst level he ever had in a winning slam.

He just didn't play an elite opponent.

Goffin is not a clay dog haha.

Goffin played his self proclaimed match of his life and it still took a terrible call to swing it in the 5th. The match was outrageous.

Yeah, but Med is getting past Berrettini on grass. One of these players eats grass for breakfast, the other is Med.

The problem for Matt is the big 3 have no respect for him. None.

Dellien seems to be the #1 Bolivian player on tour according to his wiki page. I had never noticed him either, he has barely played on big tournaments.

Dimitrov is through to the second round (walkover in his match with Basilashvili)
