I think we know who the novice is here. LOL. In no universe are either Nadal or Djokovic third best. That spot is now firmly owned by Federer.

BTW - I’ve been watching tennis since the late 1970s, played it since the early 1980s, have attended every Grand Slam at least once, and love the sport. I am the furthest thing from “extremely novice view of the sport.” It is evident that you are biased and not objective. I look at facts/data and nothing else to guide my decisions.

Federer had his chances to cement GOAT but he didn’t close the deal. He should have beaten Djokovic at least three times in Grand Slams but did not. At the end of the day, his 10 - 21 record against Nadal/Djokovic in Grand Slam tournaments was his failing. You can’t win only ten times out of 31 matches and be considered the GOAT.

I’m a big Federer fan and I now rank him at #2 behind Djokovic. So no bias here

OK, I find that very interesting. Nadal has two more Grand Slams wins than Federer so should that not put him ahead of Federer? I’m honestly just curious. I would think that the number of Grand Slams won would be the most defining characteristic and then other milestones as discussed above.

Honestly to me they are all so close that it’s hard to rank any of them above the other. But for some reason I just can’t overlook the fact that Nadal only has 8 slams on the surfaces that 3 majors are played on every single year. Compared to his clay prowess where he’s nearly unbeatable. And yea I know it’s not his fault only 1 of the slams is played on clay. I think to be fair there should have always been 2 slams played on each surface. But that’s just not the way it is lol.

Yes, this is a fair analytical point. But at the end of the day, the way I reconcile that fact is that Nadal has managed to dominate his best surface more than Federer and Djokovic have on their favorite surface (Grass for Fed and HC for Djokovic). I also agree that the three of them will always be discussed together and that at the end of the day, it is just us tennis fanatics on boards like these who care. My 75 year old Dad watched the match today and told me that he really enjoyed it but that the players he grew up with in the 1950s and 1960s would have done just as well if they had modern equipment!!

If you told me that Djokovic’s first serve percentage would be 61% and Kyrgios’ was 73% and Kyrgios would have 62 winners and 30 aces and Djokovic would win in four, I’d be are you kidding me?

it was even 74% first serve in from kyrgios. if you consider how great his first serve is, this makes djokovics win very very impressive.

I wasn’t able to watch this match, but I know who won. Is there anything about it that makes it worth watching anyway?

Kyrigos shotmaking (mainly serves though) and Djokovic's focus + returns.
If Kyrigos would put 50% of Djoker's, Rafa's or Roger's effort in training than he would have Grand Slams- to quote Johnny Mac. As it is, he moves slowly, imho.

Kyrgios' best exchange was between him and a drunk lady in the tenth row. Of course, she came out on top in the end.

Your dad is right. All one needs is to see how laughable modern athletes typically look in retro gear. They also have insanely better diet and training regiment run by personal specialists.

And yet Roscoe Tanner had a massive serve with now ancient gear and Borg put significant topspin with a comparatively tiny frame.

They also dedicated themselves fully to the sport, not having the mass distractions as today. The best of the best I mean.

As I said, dumb decision. So only an unvaxxed foreigner can transmit the virus, not those crossing the southern border into the US or US citizens returning?
Just let them come in. If they test positive or negative, dismiss them if they test positive. That's dumb too because not all positive testing people transmit it. You can be positive negative positive with 3 tests in 3 hours. That was proved by a few celebrities.

Wouldn't even attempt to use any logic with that law, it'll just be an exercise in futility. It's got more to do with citizen's rights than anything COVID-related.

Covid was first introduced in the US by a foreigner, so you just have to control foreigners and you made it. So easy.

Well, you know...... I'm NOT a "Federer cultist," or an anything else cultist, but to a degree, the absence of Medvedev does shave just a little off of this win. We missed Nadal, of course, but the odds are against him beating Djokovic on grass, anyway.
I believe that the ods of Medevedev beating Djokovic on grass are 10 times less than Nadal beating him. However unfortunate and unjust the ban of Russian players was, neither of them was any threat to Djokovic here....

Nick imploding as per usual. Tragic waste of talent.

It’s an almost equally tragic waste of time and energy by me and many others here expecting even a slight deviation from the probable outcome of Novak in 4.

4th set? Rest of the thread?

I’d rather watch a Russian tank implode, say, Karatsev, than Nick’s standard form.

Slept very soundly knowing that the weak era’s finest had the situation under control.

As much as I like Karatsev, he hasn't been up to par lately, while Kyrigos played good, if not great at times.

3-1 was a perfect prediction. Congratulations:
...

Groupthink can be really interesting at times. When I saw that Djokovic in 4 was clearly the most common pic, I even considered betting on it (but didn't, because I don't even have an account and don't want to get into it).

But yes, in some situations like this there seems to be "wisdom" in the masses.

That's just a clause in fine print and no one cares. They said they would allow Novak in the country should the situation change.
The situation has ALREADY CHANGED. And the previous government was also booted out.

Yeah, nobody cares about "fine print" in laws and things like that, right? Honestly, the fanbois of all the top players can be annoying, but it seems like it is only the Novak fans that seem to believe that things like rules and laws are completely mutable. They seem to represent the very worst in society...

You're an informed poster and I'm surprised you didn't read the news that Australia no longer requires vaccination to enter the country.
So Novak will play AO 2023 and very likely win it too.
I do know. However, I thought you’d know that Novak’s been banned for 3 years for the border and visa debacle. Unless the new Aus govt changes it’s mind which is a possibility. Hence why I said “in question”.

They can't even control the southern border. It's just futile. I'd rather allow a pro athlete who is super fit and tests negative to enter than a parent or relatives attempting to enter because they say their child is here. Another variant is already here. Do they seriously think Djokovic will bring the worst ever strain? Like Berretini did who was vaxxed, if you test positive you're out. I understand and respect their point of nobody allowed. Just allow them in and put them in quarantine for 2-3 weeks within the US. Make it mandatory that the unvaxxed foreigner pay a minimum of $3,000 a week. Would that help the local govt.? Yes it would.

We must build a virus wall against covid.

So wait...Fed and Djokovic have two favorite surfaces? And Nadal has only one?
What logical proof that he is dominant of most dominant GOATS, and yet your GOAT can't walk on grass!

I think some people just feel that Nadal's Slam results are too heavily RG-skewed and that he's considerably behind Federer and Djokovic in the grass and hardcourt majors, along with being far behind them in number of weeks as a #1 ranked player. Not really Nadal's fault since he had injuries and often took long breaks from the tour to recuperate mentally and physically. But it is what it is.
