Jannik Sinner got his first win against Carlos Alcaraz in the third attempt a couple of days ago. The Italian looked in trouble after a dominant start to the match but saving six out of six breakpoints in the fourth set bailed him out, 6-1 6-4 6-7 6-3. The Italian #2 has dropped a set in three of his four matches so far in this campaign, including against the world #267 Stan Wawrinka and Mikael Ymer. Regardless, he would be delighted with his performance and results as he had never won a main-draw match on grass and was lacking fitness and match-time before entering Wimbledon.
Despite the knee issues, COVID effects, and coach change, the talented Italian youngster has delivered goods in most of the tournaments he entered this year. However, getting past the quarterfinal stage has been a major problem for him in these seven months. World #13 has played five quarterfinal matches so far this year and lost them all, with one of those defeats coming in slams at the Australian Open, where he started as the favourite and lost out cheaply in straight sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Moreover, he is 0-12 in his career against top-5 players.
