I'm a bit early but had some time on my hands.
Final tournament of the year offering points, and it's for the 8 best singles players and doubles teams of the year.
Let's look at the lineup:
Leading the ladies is our dominant #1 Iga Swiatek. Iga had an amazing year, won 2 slams, went on the longest winning streak of the 21st century (37 matches) and won the most titles (8 titles) since Serena in 2013.
Next in is Ons Jabeur who had another amazing year. Wimbledon and US Open runner up. Madrid champ. Broke many records as the first Arab and African woman including the first to win a WTA1000 and be ranked #2.
Third in is our recent Guadalajara champ Jessica Pegula. Consistency is the best way to describe Jessica. QFist at the Aus Open, French Open and US Open. SF in Miami & Montreal, Runner up in Madrid and then the recent title in Mexico.
Fourth is the youngster Coco Gauff. Biggest result of the year was her run to the French Open final and her US Open QF.
Next up is Maria Sakkari. The eternal bridesmaid. 4 runner ups this year including Indian Wells, Guadalajara, St Petersburg and Parma. It'll be her 2nd consecutive WTA Finals appearance after making the SF last year.
Number 6 into the mix is Garcia who had a great year winning Cincinnati before making the US Open SF. Also won 2 International titles in Bad Homburg & Warsaw. Garcia returns to the YEC after 5 years, made her debut in 2017 making the SF.
Second last into the finals is Sabalenka. Best result was a few SF's at the US Open, Cincinnati and Rome. Also a runner up in Stuttgart & Rosmalen.
Final player in is Kasatkina. Two titles in August including WTA500 San Jose and then Granby pushed her back in the top 10. Also good results with SF's at the French Open & Rome.
Jabeur, Pegula, Gauff and Kasatkina will all be making their debut at the Finals.
On the doubles side we have:
Krejcikova/Siniakova
Dabrowski/Olmos
Gauff/Pegula
Kudermetova/Mertens
Kichenok/Ostapenko
Xu/Yang
Danilina/Haddad Maia
Krawczyk/Schuurs
Gauff/Pegula, Kudermetova, Khichenok/Ostapenko, Yang and Danilina/Haddad Maia are all making their debut.
Garbine Muguruza was the defending champion but didn't even come close to qualifying. She came in as the 8th qualifier last year winning the title and finishing #3 in the world. With her points dropping she's at #57 in the world.
Krejcikova/Siniakova meanwhile are the defending champs in doubles and come in as the #1 seeds having won 3 of the 4 slams this year (the pair missed RG due to Krejcikova getting Covid).
Worth noting both Gauff/Pegula are making their debuts in both singles and doubles.
Some names missing are our Aus Open champ Ash Barty who retired, also missing is Wimbledon champ Rybakina who got no points for her slam so didn't qualify. Simona Halep too was a top contender but ended her season early due to injury and now has a failed drug test hanging over her. Garcia/Mladenovic also not there despite being slam champs this year having won the French Open.
