2024 Boston-Toronto R1: BOS, TOR, BOS, BOS, TOR, TOR, ?

Either Toronto is gonna complete the trifecta of chokes vs Boston, or Boston is gonna go 2 years in a row blowing a 3-1 series lead. Memes will ensue either way.

Thanks. I thought they were the same path. 2019 was different path but still a game 7 loss vs Boston. I think Toronto led 3-2 in that series.
yea right tor was leading back then 3-2, also interesting moment about that toronto im recallin coz that was a part of their 10 or 11 match losing streak in playoffs in matches when they could finish the series (i.e. having three wins) in playoffs but failed each time but finally that streak was ended vs tampa last year

I think the Rangers sweep
Yep

Carolina also probably beats the Islanders just like last year, probably in 5/6
Yep

Tampa is a shadow of their former selves and Florida is one of the leagues best. Save some mental blocks, I think it’s Florida in 5
Yep

Toronto/Boston is the most interesting. I think it goes to a game 7. Don’t know who goes through. Lots of history in that matchup.
Yep

Dallas is one of the best teams in the league going up against the defending champs. Vegas knows how to win, they’ve proved it. Gonna be interesting, I think Dallas takes it.
Jury’s out

Winnipeg/Colorado is a sad series, since one of these great teams is going home R1. Both have been among the leagues best this season, serious fireworks can happen but I lean towards Colorado.
Yep

Vancouver has a tough one against Nashville who’s played some tough hockey lately. I actually think Nashville in 6/7. Vancouver has been coasting too much lately, I think they fall asleep and lose it
Nope

Edmonton/LA could be interesting but Edmonton always beats them come playoff time so I gotta go with the Flying Connor McDavids.
Yep

Actually pretty good predictions from me. Save the Vancouver/Nashville take everything else is pretty much spot on. Although i gotta be honest, these were some pretty easy R1’s to predict, especially the east.

Ya. That was a lot of last game losses for Toronto year after year

2018: Boston
2019: Boston
2020: Columbus
2021: Montreal
2022: Tampa Bay

It was an annual occurrence. Steve Dangle on YouTube was going crazy after every series.

Core has to be blown up. Coach has to be fired.

Too many first round losses in recent memory with that superteam core 4. Tavares has to go. Marner has to go.

Leafs would’ve been better just letting Dubas do what he wanted. He wanted Marner out after last season. Shanahan/owners overruled and he went to Pittsburgh. They keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting results.

Definition of insanity, tying your cap to 4 players and praying they can turn up. Tavares hasn’t turned up in forever, he’s eating up so much cap for so little end product. Marner was invisible tonight.

Matthews/Nylander should be safe. Bertuzzi, probably not. Samsonov, despite him playing his ass off is also gone. I wonder if Shanahan is gone. 10 years 1 series win with that star power. His job has to be under severe scrutiny, he vouched for so many of the underperforming players.

Why do we hate Vegas again

They put Mark Stone on injured reserve so that his salary didn't count against the salary cap. Vegas then proceeds to add multiple great players at the deadline because of it. Then, wouldn't you know, Game 1 of the playoffs comes around and who is that....!?!?! Oh.... it's Mark Stone. And he immediately scored in Game 1. And had 4-5 goals in the series. Meanwhile the mercenaries they got at the deadline were huge factors all series as well. They were like 20 million over the cap with their playoff roster. The fakest 8 seed you'll ever see.

One such mercenary they were able to sign had the game winning goal in Game 6. With Stone having the other. Fittingly.

Also just aside from that it was a meme how much they got helped starting out - the expansion draft was so egregious for Vegas that they actually had to tone it down when it came to doing it for the Seattle Kraken. Vegas made the Stanley Cup Final their first freaking year in the league lmao. So there's just a lot of general animosity for them from the rest of the NHL and their fans. Honestly some of it is just jealousy, I mean I am jealous of their success too, and it makes me mad Dallas has beaten this team 2 out of 3 times now but don't have a cup to show for it like they do.

Why do we hate Vegas again
Because they were an expansion franchise created out of pure corporate greed for the NHL to push their gambling/sports betting narrative (which succeeded as it’s being legalized in droves around the country) so they put a team in the heart of sports betting country.

Then, they gave said team absolutely everything to succeed right off the bat. In their very first season they reached the Stanley Cup Final, and in the following seasons they missed the playoffs ONCE by like 3 points and won the cup last year. The NHL’s expansion draft was very very kind to Vegas who were allowed to strip teams of valuable assets in their first year to enable INSTANT success whilst every other NHL franchise has had to go through a rough period when they first showed up. Not them though, not the Golden Boys.

And to top it off as @Federer and Del Potro mentioned, they cheat. A lot. Every year they circumvent the cap and go about 10-20m over every single time by placing their star players on LTIR during the tail end of the season before magically taking them off just in time for Game 1 of Round 1. It’s blatant cheating. Peak Tampa wasn’t even this bad.

I’m a Columbus Blue Jackets fan. Look bro, in 24 years I’ve seen one playoff series WIN. We (along with Minnesota) were the final expansion team to come out of the NHL’s huge expansion into American markets in the 90’s. Because of this, we were picking fourth liners, many teams we couldn’t even pick from because they were off limits. Look at Minnesota, same exact issues. Both of us are struggling franchises which have had nearly no hope. We’ve gone all-in for the cup ONCE, one time we pushed at the deadline to try and win. Vegas gets to do it EVERY SINGLE YEAR. And it’s not gonna stop, they’ll never be a rebuilder.

Call it sour grapes or whatever but this is pure bollocks. Nobody in the NHL likes them. **** Vegas. Forever and always.

The Devils once went over the cap and the NHL fined them $3m and took away their draft picks. All they did was offer a player a big contract and the league jumped in and said they didn’t like it.

Meanwhile Vegas is allowed to go over the cap every single year and build a superpower in a league which according to its higher ups strictly prohibits building superteams like in the NBA or European football. But they won’t say a thing, need that betting $$$ coming in.

Vegas could probably take a steaming dump on Bettman’s desk and he’d laugh it off. But if any Canadian team god forbid gives him a funny look he’s moving them immediately to some craphole in the states like Denver or Arizona.

Oh wait, he’s already done that. Quebec and Winnipeg still haven’t forgotten.

Round 2 down below

EAST
(A1) Florida vs (A2) Boston
(M1) NY Rangers vs (M2) Carolina 1-0 NYR

WEST
(C1) Dallas vs (C3) Colorado
(P1) Vancouver vs (P2) Edmonton

Rangers beat Hurricanes 4-3 to take a 1-0 series lead. Bruins-Panthers game one is tonight.

Every higher seed went through except Winnipeg/Colorado, and that one did feel as though one of these teams was gonna get shafted.

Florida might have it easy vs Boston. Bruins were beaten up pretty good by Toronto. Either team coming into this series would’ve been knackered, compared to Florida who beat Tampa easy. Their conference final might be a cakewalk, too. Carolina and NY Rangers are so tight honestly, they’ll beat themselves up as well. My pick out of the East is Florida.

Dallas showed a lot of character vs Vegas to come back from 2 games down and take game 7. It does feel like this group is hungry than ever before for the cup. But after taking out the 2023 champs, they’ve got the 2022 champs up next in Colorado. Very tough path to the SCF. Edmonton and Vancouver; I have no clue. I’m still surprised Vancouver even made the playoffs, let alone easily, let alone winning their division. Tocchet really flipped the switch for this team. Sorry, I have to go Vancouver. I actually like Edmonton a lot but the Canucks just look so good. But when it comes time for it, Dallas will take their WCF series. My pick out of the west is them.

Dallas-Florida cup final then. Dallas hasn’t lifted one in a very long time. Florida has never once lifted one.

Hard to predict Dallas-Colorado. On the one hand the Avalanche are one of the only teams in the league that might have a better first line than Dallas. But Dallas' 2nd through 4th lines are superior. I also trust Otter, as inconsistent as he can be, over their netminder. So as long as Dallas is not calamitous on defense, they are the favorite. Though I'm not a big fan of Game 1 already being tomorrow. Avalanche can get an instant advantage being rested for a week + and can take away home ice already.

Biggest question that needs answering are the guys that struggled against Vegas going to show up now that they're playing a much less physical and defensive team? Going to need Hintz, Duchene, Seguin etc to be able to show up and actually put pucks in the net against Colorado. Pavelski contributing more would also be nice, but he's all but fossilized.

The Canes got demolished in NYC yesterday. Sad scenes. NY fans kind of suck when you are going against them.

Canes and Stars have had cup winning caliber teams a few times this past decade but it never pans out for them for some reason - well scholars say some reason.

But the answer is simple - Kralpo teams.

This is a thrilling game it really is. Playoff hockey > playoff NBA? Maybe. The New Yorkers are going crazy here. Canes just lack that high end offensive talent to really make things happen imo. They’re like the grit and grind Grizzlies

NHL is so inherently close that games shave years off of your life in a way the NBA rarely does. The only thing that helps the nerves somewhat is that hockey is pretty niche when it comes to fandom.

But any of these final 8 teams can beat any of the other ones. And that makes it interesting, nerve-wracking, and a better product than the NBA.

I cursed the Canes by paying attention to hockey again. What an absolute dagger that is.

Bowing out to minimize the damages.

Bruins pound the Panthers in Florida. Nice start to that one.

Rangers up 2-0 on Hurricanes, but now the series heads to Raleigh. We could see a shift here. But we could also just see the Canes give up and call it a day. Who knows with them.

Avs and Stars deadlocked 3-3 with 10 to go in the 3rd. That’s gonna be a cracking series I think.
