Welcome to 2nd slam of the year: Rolland Garros
Will Iga defend her title? Will she retain number 1 or Sabalenka come through and grab number 1 with 2nd consecutive slam win this year?
Only time will tell.

Polls are based on odds.

These middle names are amazing.

Really there’s only one question and that is how is Iga’s knee? The injury in Rome looked gnarly and she clearly had issues given the retirement. She’ll play, but if the movement and ability to twist into shots is diminished, she likely won’t win.

Also interesting is which side Rybakina is placed on.

Ah that's rotten luck. Probably Wimbledon gone as well.

I'm following Osorio-Andreeva at the moment in final qualifying. Looks like a hell of a match just looking at the scores. Both of these players should be in the main tournament really. If there's a lucky loser, I hope it comes from this tie.

If Mirra wins Osorio is the first in the line of receiving LL-spot. Both of these players would deserve main draw spot but if Osorio turns this around, I'm afraid Mirra has very thin chance to get into main draw. :(

I watched the young prodigy in her two earlier matches for some time and not only is she a great general talent but plays patient clay court tennis just the way it's meant to be played! (y)

Ah, I thought the LL was randomised for some reason.

@ScottleeSV
It is randomised for all losers in the final Q, they change it some time ago. So best of luck Osorio.

Edit: 4 highest ranking will be randomly drawn for 1-2 LL spots. If More than 2, the pot is L+2 highest ranked players.

Osorio and Andreeva are both through then, given Badosa is out?

Both will be dangerous floaters, maybe not for the Big Three, but certainly for those lower seeded players.

Now for the rest of the juicy matchups:

#18 Azarenka v Andreescu. Battle of slam champs.

#20 Keys v Kanepi. Honestly just because Kaia Kanepi has consistently shown herself to be one of the most dangerous floaters who takes out big seeds at slams, i've included this.

Kontaveit v Pera. This time last year Kontaveit was the 5th seed, now she's down to #73 and facing a tough one against Pera who's having a good year and into the Strasbourg QF.

#8 Sakkari v Muchova. Karolina in great form lately, Sakkari not playing awfully but is just a hot mess express at the slams.

#21 Linette v Fernandez. Leylah made the QF last year and if she doesn't defend her points will drop out of the top 100. Magda is the seeded player and took out Barty at the French just 2 years ago. Important match between the 2.

Cornet v Giorgi. Just think this one will be very interesting between two spicy players on tour.

#3 Pegula v Collins. Jessie the 3rd seed up against a slam finalist and multi slam SFist, something that Pegula is yet to accomplish. Real tough 1R.

#26 Trevisan v Svitolina. Trevisan a SFist in RG last year vs former top 3 and 2x slam SFist Svitolina who's just returning from having her kid.

#16 Pliskova v Sloane. No reason needed.

#2 Sabalenka v Kostyuk is going to get massive headlines.

Kostyuk who represents Ukraine is known for not shaking any opponents hands from Russia or Belarus due to the war (as we've seen in her matches against Potapova, Azarenka etc). So now on the biggest stage she's drawn against the reigning Aus Open champ and #2 Sabalenka from Belarus. Won't be hard to imagine what could happen.

Yastremska and Minnen playing tight, intensive R3 quali-match. Minnen was up a break in the third but now on serve again at 3-3.

I understand that many people don't like Dayana because of... well, certain reasons, but I think she has great looking game (and looks herself good too), so I hope she will reach the main draw. She definitely has enough talent to be there and I actually thought she would beat player like Minnen easily.

Oh no the commentator on the Stevens v. Stearns match just said he likes her chances at beating Pliskova and moving through an open draw...why does he have to jinx it like that?!

So, the more talented player wins: Dayana winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. She underlined my views on couple of points - wonderful looking playing!

They're tennis players, not soldiers or politicians. Relax.

Peyton is playing really well in the Big League. Normally college players don’t do that great in the pros.
She was one of the recipients of that 100k grant that helps them transition to the pros. Danielle Collins was too. I bet a big part of it is just the funding to travel enough to get points. More guys on the ATP side are coming out of college too.

Hard to bet against Iga at RG. Of course, Sabs and Rybakina have to be close seconds as favorites. Hate to count out Barbora Krejcikova as she usually dominates at RG, but she really hasn't been playing at her top form.

Iga has the hardest draw possible. Krejcikova in her quarter and then Rybakina in the SFs, and likely Sabalenka in the finals.

If her knee is not 100% right I believe we’ll see a new champion at Roland Garros.

Well, winning a tourney is certainly not ‘has been struggling’. Just admit that was an inaccurate post.

And I don’t even like her.

I didn't say they were, nor do I expect war to break out between them. Just that inevitably when it gets to the handshake, it won't happen and we'll get all the headlines and articles about it as we did for the Potapova match and for the Azarenka match,

Swiatek rubs me the wrong way, so hope my 2 favorite woman players (Kenin & Rybakina) take her out viciously (y)

Saby will have no problem getting past Kostyuk.
On a purely tennis level, I think Kostyuk is good enough to beat her (occasionally). This time though I think the war will work against her. Sabalenka will already be a wounded animal from Rome. The thought of losing Rd 1 here to someone who won't even shake her hand; I think that will put her in full overwhelming power mode, complete with loud noises and all the rest of it.

If Kostyuk plays well though, you never know. There's rust in Rd 1. I remember Jabuer last year. Nobody thought she would lose to Linette.

What tourney did she win?

I actually do like her, but those results don’t suggest she’s on fire.

Yeah I just don’t see it. She has been struggling.
She won a clay 125 in France, won a match in Rome, & is in the semis of Rabat. Did you just not count any of those results?

Sloane struggled far, far more last year before going on to make the French Open QF.

She was 0-4 on clay, no wins. Her last loss in Strasbourg the week before RG was to #306 lucky loser Berberovic.

But come RG she had a great run making the QF.

So Spy kinda has a point.

I hope she does well and agree she always performs better than her norm at RG.

Iga Świątek and Elena Rybakina have been placed in same half of the draw at *each* tournament they both entered in 2023:

I see Towsend and Mandlik have made it through qualies. Confession - I've never seen Madlik play. I really only know of her and follow her results because of her mother. Does she have any of Hana's flair?
