I missed most of the 1st set. Did Kalinina had an injury timeout or injured herself in the 1st set?
Good question. I didn't watch all of the match, and certainly not closely.
I'm curious at which point exactly Kalinina injured herself, because I saw her run
down some amazing drop shots that I was sure she'd never get to. Her movement
overall was excellent, so I'd like to know when it happened?

Kalinina is a disgrace, pure and simple. Couldn’t withstand the pressure and quit. This is not that Ukrainian people need from her.

“I’m really sorry that I couldn’t play,” Kalinina said during the awards ceremony as the crowd, which had waited under the rain for hours before the night session started, whistled.

Later she said: “I feel I’m at my physical limit. I felt the leg after the quarter-finals. I pushed myself yesterday, and today I started, but after two, three games I couldn’t. I was trying, but it was absolutely impossible.”

Kalinina had spent more than 4 hours longer on court than Rybakina entering the final, having won the longest match on tour this season, 3 hours and 41 minutes against Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil in the quarter-finals, while she also needed 3 sets to beat Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in an emotionally charged semi-final on Friday.

The 26-year-old, who is good friends with Rybakina, said her only goal now is to recover and get back to working on her game.

So, that's both Iga and Kali out with thigh injuries in the same tourni vs Rybakina. Hope they recover well. They brought a lot of great tennis to us.

How many fans were at this match?
It wasn't a full house but was actually quite well-attended considering the time it started and everything.
Considering the match's length and all that transpired though you did well to pass on it.

This was the first time in all my years of watching tennis where I saw an umpire invited to the mic to make a speech!
Unbeeleebable. :)

Yes, it looked like a total confusion there. Perhaps they tried to amend the Madrid speech snafu, by letting even the ones who don't normally have the opportunity to speak. :)

I read an article this morning that the announcer called Rybakina as Kalinina, then made the 2nd mistake of calling Kali as Rybakina. That's not the end, the announcer and staff prizes were supposedly swapped.

Then lastly the article said that the "announcer repeatedly stressed how sorry he was about Anhelina Kalinina's injury, as well as repeatedly belittling Rybakina's wins."

Now it made sense, I was puzzled by all the booing during the presentation. The crowd was booing all the disorganized, chaotic, and sloppy presentation.

Maybe all the regular presenters left because it was very late. So the next shift took over.:laughing:

There was no “next shift” so they had to grab the cleaning staff. :-D :-D

Kalinina made a mistake to vote to go ahead with the final tonight.

Should've elected to play tomorrow.

I don't know how the authorities would've handled a split vote but at least she would've had a chance at a better recovery.
Yeah what was her thinking behind playing today instead of tomorrow when she already knew how tired she was. Hope there's an explanation in the post match media interview.
